The identification of HLA restricted immune dominant cytotoxic T cell (CTL) epitopes limits immune therapy. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease remains a significant cause of morbidity after allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Adoptive immune therapy using CTLs stimulated with immune dominant CMV pp65 peptides may be effective in preventing CMV disease, but immune dominant CMV peptides have been identified for only a few HLA class I molecules.

To evaluate whether this regimen could be used for other tumor types, the authors conducted a Phase I study on HIIC with doxorubicin and cisplatin in patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis or sarcomatosis.

SUMMARY: Over the last few decades a wealth of evidence has been gathered on the potential role that the immune system (IS) can play in the fight against cancer. Together with cell surface adhesion molecules, cytokines (CKs) mediate the activities of IS cells. Therefore, CK kinetics may represent a mirror of the immunologic phenomena occurring in the tumor microenvironment, where immune and malignant cells interact.
