The accumulation and aggregation of beta-amyloid (Aβ) peptides contributes to neuronal dysfunction and death. These Aβ peptides originate from a transmembrane protein known as amyloid precursor protein (APP), which can be processed via two competing pathways. Alpha-secretase (ADAM10) cleavage is thought to be neuroprotective while beta-secretase (BACE1) cleavage results in the production of Aβ.

Background: The study investigated the expectations of patients undergoing immediate breast reconstruction after mastectomy, considering factors such as the cause for mastectomy (cancer versus prophylactic due or gene mutations), age, marital status, and education.
Methods: The study had a cross-sectional design. Eligible patients at Oslo University Hospital received a link to the BREAST-Q Expectations questionnaire, which they filled out before surgery from 2019 to 2022.
Exercise promotes brain plasticity partly by stimulating increases in mature brain-derived neurotrophic factor (mBDNF), but the role of the pro-BDNF isoform in the regulation of BDNF metabolism in humans is unknown. We quantified the expression of pro-BDNF and mBDNF in human skeletal muscle and plasma at rest, after acute exercise (+/- lactate infusion), and after fasting. Pro-BDNF and mBDNF were analyzed with immunoblotting, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, immunohistochemistry, and quantitative polymerase chain reaction.

Methods: A total of 38 patients (43 hips) were included: 24 patients (28 hips) underwent large-head total hip arthroplasty (XL THA), and 14 patients (15 hips) underwent hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA). The median follow-up time was 11 (range 7-12) years.
Pollen apertures are an interesting model for the formation of specialized plasma-membrane domains. The plant-specific protein INP1 serves as a key aperture factor in such distantly related species as Arabidopsis, rice and maize. Although INP1 orthologues probably play similar roles throughout flowering plants, they show substantial sequence divergence and often cannot substitute for each other, suggesting that INP1 might require species-specific partners.

This study aimed to investigate complications, patient-reported pain, health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL) and satisfaction following reconstructive surgery at Oslo University Hospital between 2006 and 2013.
Methods: Data were collected retrospectively from the records of 238 patients.
The incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) increases with age and early onset indicates an increased likelihood for genetic predisposition for this disease. The somatic genetics of tumor development in relation to patient age remains mostly unknown. We have examined the mutation status of five known cancer critical genes in relation to age at diagnosis, and compared the genomic complexity of tumors from young patients without known CRC syndromes with those from elderly patients.

Methods: Patent blue was used as tracer. The four blue nodes closest to the tumor were defined as the sentinel node(s) by the pathologist.
The present study is based on 1,069 autopsies made up of stomach, breast, renal and colonic cancer. Periodicity is described in the liver weight index (liver weight/body height) at death in patients with liver metastases. The seasonal variation tended to be more marked in females and among older patients, and it differed with tumour type.

The findings are consistent with the cascade hypothesis that metastases develop in discrete steps, first in the liver, next in the lungs and finally, in other sites. Deviations of necropsy findings from the cascade model are largely explained on the basis of false negative reports.
