Impression cytology of ocular surface in xeroderma pigmentosum.

Purpose: To describe cellular alterations detected by impression cytology of the ocular surface in patients with xeroderma pigmentosum. The secondary objective was to assess the reliability of impression cytology in diagnosing ocular surface squamous neoplasia.

Methods: Patients with xeroderma pigmentosum underwent a single-day complete ophthalmological examination and impression cytology for ocular surface evaluation using 13 mm diameter mixed cellulose esters membrane filters and combined staining with Periodic Acid Schiff, Hematoxylin and Eosin, and Papanicolaou stains followed by microscopic analysis.

Sebaceous adenoma of the conjunctiva and caruncle: a clinicopathological report of three cases and literature review.

Sebaceous tumors of the conjunctiva and caruncle are rare conditions, accounting for 1% of caruncle lesions and even lower among conjunctival lesions. Almost 50% of cases are associated with Muir-Torre syndrome, a rare autosomal-dominant condition characterized by at least one sebaceous skin tumor and one visceral malignancy. We report 3 cases of sebaceous adenoma with different presentations that were submitted to excisional biopsy and immunohistochemical study.

[Correlation of natural killer cells with the prognosis of gastric adenocarcinoma].

Aim: To evaluate the concentration of Natural Killer cells (NK) cells in adenocarcinoma of the stomach, and its correlation with prognostic factors and survival.

Methods: Seventy-two patients with gastric adenocarcinoma who underwent gastric resection surgery and D2 lymphadenectomy in the period 1997-2007 were analyzed. The concentration of NK cells was evaluated by immunohistochemistry technique with the reagent CD57.

[A safety study of retinal toxicity after serial intravitreal injections of infliximab in rabbits eyes].

Purpose: To determine retinal and choroid toxicity levels of two and three infliximab intravitreous injections in albino rabbits by means of electroretinographic, histological and ophthalmological clinical tests.

Methods: 12 albino rabbits were used in the study. Each eye was given two (n=10 eyes) or three (n=10 eyes) serial intravitreous 2 mg infliximab injections dissolved in 0.

Rosai-Dorfman disease manifesting as an epibulbar ocular tumour.

The authors report a rare case of extranodal Rosai-Dorfman disease without systemic involvement. A 14-year-old girl presented with a slowly progressive, non-tender, well-circumscribed, perilimbal nodule in the right eye. Excisional biopsy was performed and histopathologic and immunohistochemical analysis established the diagnosis.

Bronchial glomus tumor with right upper lobe atelectasis.

Glomus tumors are uncommon benign soft tissue neoplasms. We report the case of a 32-year-old male who presented with right upper lobe atelectasis due to an endobronchial tumor. The patient underwent right upper lobectomy and wedge bronchoplasty.

[Lichen planus leading to bilateral cicatrizing keratoconjunctivitis: case report].

To describe a case of bilateral cicatrizing keratoconjunctivitis in a patient with lichen planus and review the literature. Conjunctiva cicatrization with symblepharon formation, dry eye, corneal infiltration and neovascularization and thinning were the most observed prominent signs. Diagnosis was based on clinical findings and biopsy, after exclusion of typical causes of cicatricial keratoconjunctivitis.

Porcine pericardium as glaucoma implant tube coverage--an experimental study.

Purpose: To evaluate the inflammatory response associated with the use of processed porcine pericardium and glycerin-preserved homologous sclera as silicone glaucoma drainage device coverage in a rabbit experimental model.

Methods: Eight New Zealand white rabbits' eyes received an equal-sized glycerin-preserved homologous scleral patch or a double-layered processed porcine pericardium that was sutured to the bare sclera covering a silicone tube. Conjunctival hyperemia was graded using the double-blind method during the immediate postoperative period and during the first, third, and seventh postoperative weeks.

Dendriform pulmonary ossification.

Diffuse pulmonary ossification is a rare condition of unknown pathogenesis in which mature bone is found in the pulmonary parenchyma. It is almost invariably discovered as an incidental finding at autopsy. Most commonly, it affects middle-aged men and is asymptomatic.

[Analysis of clinicopathological, tumor cell proliferation and apoptosis parameters in adenocarcinoma of the gastric cardia].

Background/aims: In view of the increased incidence of carcinoma of the cardia over recent years, this work had the aim of studying the clinicopathological aspects, cell proliferative and tumor apoptotic indices of this neoplasm, their interrelations and possible influences on the prognosis.

Material And Methods: Forty cases of adenocarcinoma of the cardia were studied between 1988 and 2001, with a minimum clinical follow-up of 3 years. Patients were excluded if they had previous chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatment, presented early neoplasia, or died during the operations or for other reasons unrelated to cancer.

[Bilateral epibulbar rheumatoid nodulosis: case report].

A 64-year-old woman with a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis developed painless bilateral episcleral rheumatoid nodules without any flare-up of her associated disease. Biopsy of the lesions disclosed a lymphocytic and plasmacytic infiltration within the conjunctiva, overlying palisading granulomas with multinucleated giant cells, and central necrobiotic degeneration of the collagen of the episclera and superficial sclera. The rheumatologic designation for the development of groups of nodules in inactive rheumatoid arthritis is rheumatoid nodulosis.

Corneal endothelial cell morphology of normal dogs in different ages.

Endothelial cell function is essential to maintain corneal transparency, but unfortunately the regenerative capacity of the endothelium is limited. There are only a few reports describing the effect of age on morphologic appearance of corneal endothelial cells of dogs. Studies of normal corneal endothelial cells in humans and dogs have shown a decrease in endothelial cell density (ECD) and an increase in pleomorphism and polymegethism with advancing age.

Eyelid swelling as the only manifestation of ocular sarcoidosis.

Purpose: To describe a case of eyelid sarcoidosis without systemic manifestations with a three-year follow-up.

Methods: A 73-year-old woman presented complaining of a one-year history of swelling and hyperemia in the right upper eyelid. To confirm the diagnosis, we performed an incisional biopsy of the eyelid.

Primary hyperparathyroidism simulating motor neuron disease: case report.

We report a case of a 26-year-old man who presented a lower motor neuron syndrome due to hyperparathyroidism. Electromyography showed neurogenic features with normal nerve conduction studies. Hypercalcemia led to the discovery of a primary hyperparathyroidism with gland hyperplasia.

Fordyce nodules in a buccal membrane graft to the ocular surface.

Purpose: To present a case of epibulbar Fordyce nodules, with a referral diagnosis of primary tumor.
