Double-strand breaks (DSBs) in DNA are challenging to repair. Cells employ at least three DSB-repair mechanisms, with a preference for non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) over homologous recombination (HR) and microhomology-mediated end joining (MMEJ). While most eukaryotic DNA is transcribed into RNA, providing complementary genetic information, much remains unknown about the direct impact of RNA on DSB-repair outcomes and its role in DSB-repair via end joining.

Double-strand breaks (DSBs) in DNA are naturally occurring destructive events in all organisms that may lead to genome instability. Cells employ various repair methods known as non-homologous end joining (NHEJ), microhomology mediated end joining (MMEJ), and homology-directed recombination (HDR). These repair processes may lead to DNA sequence variations (e.

Background: Maternal dietary habits are contributors of maternal and fetal health; however, available data are heterogeneous and not conclusive.

Methods: Nutrient intake during pregnancy was assessed in 503 women with uncomplicated pregnancies, using the validated Food Frequency Questionnaire developed by the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC-FFQ).

Results: In all, 68% of women had a normal body mass index at the beginning of pregnancy, and 83% of newborns had an appropriate weight for gestational age.

Purpose: Placenta previa is a major cause of maternal morbidity and mortality, associated to a high risk of peripartum hemorrhage and hysterectomy. We aimed to verify if prophylactic intraoperative uterine artery embolization in patients with placenta previa and at least one additional risk of bleeding (major placenta previa), can reduce hemorrhage, need for blood transfusions, peripartum hysterectomy and maternal morbidity.

Materials And Methods: We enrolled 76 patients with major placenta previa; a specific multidisciplinary protocol was designed for management, including ultrasound evaluation, hospitalization at 34 weeks, antenatal corticosteroids and scheduled cesarean section at 35-36 weeks.

Background: More than one-third of COVID-19 patients present neurological symptoms ranging from anosmia to stroke and encephalopathy. Furthermore, pre-existing neurological conditions may require special treatment and may be associated with worse outcomes. Notwithstanding, the role of neurologists in COVID-19 is probably underrecognized.

Endosulfan is a Persistent Organic Pollutant insecticide still used in many countries. It is commercially available as mixtures of two diastereomers, α- and β-endosulfan, known as technical grade endosulfan (TGE). A laboratory model based on the use of axenic plant cell cultures to study the removal and metabolization of both isomers from contaminated water matrixes was established.

A screening based on undifferentiated plant cells allowed identifying Gardenia jasminoides as the best biocatalyst to perform the kinetic resolution of 1-phenylethanol. This species was further tested for its ability to oxidize stereoselectively the (S)-isomers from racemic mixtures of secondary alcohols leaving their antipodes unaffected in Tris-HCl buffer. Those substrates which afforded the best results in the kinetic resolution were subjected to a chemo-enzymatic sequence of deracemization.

Aim: To evaluate whether the presence of specific polymorphism in the gene promoter of collagen and some matrix metalloproteinases was associated with the risk of developing pelvic organ prolapse.

Methods: A case-control study was carried on 233 women: 137 were cases with ≥ stage II pelvic organ prolapse and 96 were matched controls without pelvic pathologies. Allele and genotype frequencies related to polymorphisms at the Sp1 site of type I collagen and some functional polymorphisms in the promoters of metalloproteinases-1, -3 and -9 have been compared between groups.

Chagas disease, a neglected tropical disease that due to population movements is no longer limited to Latin America, threatens a wide spectrum of people(travellers, migrants, blood or organ recipients, newborns, adoptees) also in non-endemic countries where it is generally underdiagnosed. In Italy, the available epidemiological data about Chagas disease have been very limited up to now, although the country is second in Europe only to Spain in the number of residents from Latin American. Among 867 at-risk subjectsscreened between 1998 and 2010, the Centre for Tropical Diseases in Negrar (Verona) and the Infectious and Tropical Diseases Unit, University of Florence found 4.

Background: Matrix metalloproteinases are a family of proteolytic enzymes that can degrade extracellular matrix components and have been implicated in connective tissue remodeling associated with cancer invasion and metastasis. These proteins are also involved in the invasive events underlying endometriotic lesion formation and aggressive behavior. Given the established genetic background of endometriosis, the aim of this study was to examine the potential impact of two polymorphisms in the gene promoter region of two of these enzymes, matrix metalloproteinases 1 and 3, on predisposition and severity of the disease.

Serial sexual homicide has been the object of intensive study from forensic psychiatric, criminological, developmental, and sociological perspectives. In contradistinction to these approaches, neuropsychiatric concepts and methods have received relatively little attention in this area. In this article we adopt a neuropsychiatric developmental perspective and undertake a review of the psychiatric literature on violence and autism spectrum disorders.

Objective: To evaluate fetal-maternal temperature relationship and fetal cardiovascular and metabolic response during maternal hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass in pregnant ewes.

Methods: Cardiopulmonary bypass was instituted in 9 pregnant ewes, reaching 2 different levels of maternal hypothermia: 24 degrees C to 20 degrees C (deep hypothermia) in group A (5 cases) and less than 20 degrees C (very deep hypothermia) in group B (4 cases). Hypothermic levels were maintained for 20 minutes, then the rewarming phase was started.

Objective: To prospectively evaluate the accuracy of a multiparameter, ultrasound-based triage and its impact on surgical management of adnexal masses.

Methods: Masses evaluated as normal according to Ferrazzi's sonographic morphological score were considered as being at low risk of malignancy and eligible for laparoscopic treatment without further evaluation. Masses evaluated as abnormal, but without additional risk factors such as ascites, diameter > or = 10 cm, bilaterality, immobility, resistance index < or = 0.

Posttraumatic stress disorder has long been linked to violent behavior. However, the exact nature of that association remains poorly characterized due to the limitations of knowledge in the area of phenomenology, contextual factors, the biology, and the nature of the aggression involved in the disorder. A clear understanding of the genesis of violence in posttraumatic stress disorder can be helpful to those involved in assessing psychiatric-legal issues relevant to the disorder and in its therapeutic management.

Stalking behavior has been associated with several mental disorders, both psychotic and non-psychotic. The most frequently associated condition appears to be an individual with primitive personality psychopathology regardless of co-occurring psychotic symptomatology. Among the psychotic symptoms, erotomanic, and jealousy delusions may be the most clinically and torensically relevant.

The delusional misidentification syndromes are characterized by a misidentification delusion of the self and/or others. Delusional misidentification syndromes frequently occur in psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia, psychotic disorder due to general medical condition, or psychotic disorder not otherwise specified. On rare occasions these syndromes may be associated with manic states secondary to bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, or general medical conditions.
