Lupus anticoagulant-hypoprothrombinemia syndrome (LAHPS) is an uncommon but significant hematological disorder characterized by the presence of lupus anticoagulant (LA) and reduced levels of prothrombin (factor II). This syndrome presents a unique clinical paradox where patients may experience both a bleeding tendency due to hypoprothrombinemia and a prothrombotic state associated with LA. This syndrome should be suspected in the presence of increased coagulation times (prothrombin time and activated partial thromboplastin time) in association with the presence of LA.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study employed a SEIR model to analyze transmission dynamics and found that MSM with high sexual activity contributed significantly more to mpox spread than those with low sexual activity, but vaccinated individuals were less likely to spread the virus.
  • * Findings suggest that ongoing vaccination efforts, increased awareness in at-risk communities, and regular genomic surveillance are essential for managing future mpox outbreaks and potential threats from new viral clades.

  • - Plant defensins like PgD1 from Picea glauca (Canadian Pine) are small antimicrobial proteins that help plants fight off bacteria, viruses, and fungi, making them potential alternatives to chemical pesticides.
  • - The study successfully produced PgD1 in E. coli to test its antifungal effects against harmful plant pathogens, showing significant growth inhibition of several fungi known to damage crops.
  • - PgD1 demonstrated strong stability against temperature changes and retains its antifungal properties due to a structure rich in cysteine, suggesting its practical application in agricultural plant protection.

A survey of Diaporthe/Phomopsis Complex (DPC) species was carried out on 479 asymptomatic soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) seed samples collected from commercial soybean fields in the states of Santa Catarina (20 counties) and Rio Grande do Sul (41 counties), in the 2020/21 (n=186), 2021/22 (n=138) and 2022/23 (n=155) seasons from 120 cultivars. The seeds were provided by seed producers who collected according to the sampling standard of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply.

  • A task force of healthcare professionals created evidence-based recommendations for managing Raynaud's phenomenon and digital ulcers in patients with systemic sclerosis and other connective tissue diseases.
  • The recommendations include 5 main principles and 13 specific suggestions, with a focus on coordinated team care and shared decision-making between patients and healthcare providers.
  • Nifedipine is recommended as the first-line treatment, with other medications like sildenafil and tadalafil as second-line options, while non-drug interventions are advised but lack strong evidence.

Histoplasmosis is commonly observed in AIDS patients as a neglected opportunistic disease that has an important relationship with environmental factors. The present study described the clinical characteristics of HIV/AIDS patients diagnosed with disseminated histoplasmosis in a tertiary healthcare facility in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, and evaluated the patients' homes and urban environmental samples as a source of exposure to Histoplasma capsulatum. A review of medical records from 2017 to 2019 of patients with HIV/AIDS associated with histoplasmosis was carried out, as well as the collection of environmental samples in the homes of these patients.

The effect of operational conditions on the stability of acidogenic fermentation (AF) devoted to volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production still presents numerous gaps to achieve high yields and fully understand the responses of open microbiomes associated to this technology. To cope with that, this investigation was designed to assess the stability of VFAs production via AF of agro-food wastes at high hydraulic retention times (HRTs) (20 and 30 d) and pH oscillations (5.8-6.

  • Hypereosinophilia is rare in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) but can occur in severe, long-term cases, particularly where there are extra-articular symptoms and high rheumatoid factor levels.
  • A 46-year-old woman with untreated severe RA experienced critical symptoms leading to cardiac arrest, prompting emergency medical intervention that revealed hypereosinophilia and inflammatory conditions.
  • After ruling out other causes, she was diagnosed with hypereosinophilic syndrome associated with RA and successfully treated with glucocorticoids and methotrexate, achieving clinical remission within 12 weeks.

Background: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination is recommended for non-immunised patients with rheumatic diseases starting biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs). There is some evidence that HBV vaccination is effective in patients under conventional synthetic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (csDMARDs), but it is currently unclear whether this also applies to bDMARDs.

Objectives: To assess the efficacy and safety of HBV vaccination in patients with inflammatory arthritides treated with bDMARDs.

Lycopene is a carotenoid with potential use in the treatment of chronic illnesses. Here, different formulations of lycopene were studied: lycopene-rich extract from red guava (LEG), purified lycopene from red guava (LPG) and a self-emulsifying drug delivery system loaded with LPG (nanoLPG). The effects of administering orally various doses of LEG to hypercholesterolemic hamsters were evaluated regarding the liver function of the animals.

A woman with systemic sclerosis presents with a severe and rapidly progressive form of gastrointestinal involvement, mainly marked by recurrent refractory episodes of pseudo-obstruction, culminating in severe malnutrition and dependence of parenteral nutrition. The impact on her quality of life was extremely significant. As a last resort, she started intravenous immunoglobulin with progressive improvement of her symptoms, allowing for the reinstitution of oral diet and removal of parenteral nutrition.

This single-case study aimed to evaluate access the geographic accessibility and availability of primary health care (PHC) in a remote rural municipality in Amazonas Stater, Brazil, to control systemic arterial hypertension. A thematic analysis was conducted to interpret the content of 11 semi-structured interviews with municipal managers, PHC professionals, and hypertensive healthcare users. Geographical accessibility is associated with river mobility, transportation availability, users' financial travelling condition, and the presence of services near riverine communities, whereas availability to diagnose and monitor hypertensive patients depend on the presence of healthcare providers, medications, and equipment and the integration of PHC with the local health care network.
