ADP-ribosylation factor-like 4c (ARL4C) is identified as a small GTP-binding protein, which is expressed by Wnt and EGF signaling and plays an important role in tubulogenesis of cultured cells and the ureters. ARL4C is little expressed in adult tissues, but it is highly expressed in lung cancer and colorectal cancer and shown to represent a molecular target for cancer therapy based on siRNA experiments. This study revealed that ARL4C is highly expressed in primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tumors and colorectal cancer liver metastases, and that ARL4C expression is associated with poor prognosis for these cancers.

We have recently demonstrated that ELK1, a transcription factor that triggers downstream targets including proto-oncogene, promotes the growth of bladder cancer cells possessing a functional androgen receptor (AR). We here assessed the function of ELK1, as well as the efficacy of a selective α1A-adrenergic blocker silodosin that has been shown to inhibit ELK1 activity in bladder cancer cells, in urothelial tumorigenesis. The level of ELK1 expression in an immortalized normal urothelial cell line SVHUC stably expressing wild-type AR (SVHUC-AR) was considerably higher than that in AR-negative SVHUC-vector cells, which was induced further or reduced by dihydrotestosterone or silodosin treatment, respectively.

The classical cancer therapies, including chemotherapy and radiation therapy, can initially show good results and tumor shrinkage; however, for most cancer patients disease recurrence is a common event. This tumor regrowth following therapy is now thought to depend on a small population of cancer stem cells (CSCs), which, similar to other stem cells, have the capacity for self-renewal and multipotent differentiation. Cancer stem cells have been identified based on cell surface protein expression in many tumor types, and for all diseases studied, this specific cell population is required for serial transplantation in animal models.

We propose that the chiral anomaly of Weyl superconductors gives rise to negative thermal magnetoresistivity induced by emergent magnetic fields, which are generated by vortex textures of order parameters or lattice strain. We establish this scenario by combining the argument based on Berry curvatures and the quasiclassical theory of the Eilenberger equation with quantum corrections arising from inhomogeneous structures. It is found that the chiral anomaly contribution of the thermal conductivity exhibits characteristic temperature dependence, which can be a smoking-gun signature of this effect.

Malate dehydrogenase (MDH), a carbohydrate and energy metabolism enzyme in eukaryotes, catalyzes the interconversion of malate to oxaloacetate (OAA) in conjunction with that of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) to NADH.
