Article Synopsis
  • Diversion colitis (DC) is an inflammatory condition linked to disrupted fecal flow and nutrient deficiencies resulting from changes in gut bacteria, but how it develops is not fully understood.
  • A study investigated the impact of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in five patients with DC, finding they experienced endoscopic remission and symptom improvement after treatment.
  • The research highlights that FMT significantly alters the microbiota in the diverted colon, suggesting it may be a promising treatment for DC due to its role in restoring normal gut function.

Increase of the enteric bacteriophages (phage), components of the enteric virome, has been associated with the development of inflammatory bowel diseases. However, little is known about how a given phage contributes to the regulation of intestinal inflammation. In this study, we isolated a new phage associated with Enterococcus gallinarum, named phiEG37k, the level of which was increased in C57BL/6 mice with colitis development.

The transplantation of muscle progenitor cells (MuPCs) differentiated from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) is a promising approach for treating skeletal muscle diseases such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). However, proper purification of the MuPCs before transplantation is essential for clinical application. Here, by using MYF5 hiPSC reporter lines, we identified two markers for myogenic cell purification: CDH13, which purified most of the myogenic cells, and FGFR4, which purified a subset of MuPCs.

It is reported that an increase in aerobic bacteria, a lack of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and immune disorders in the diverted colon are major causes of diversion colitis. However, the precise pathogenesis of this condition remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to examine the microbiota, intestinal SCFAs, and immunoglobulin A (IgA) in the diverted colon.

Basic and clinical research have shown that the expression of molecules involved in the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell signaling pathway is related to the sensitivity to molecular-targeted agents. We herein report a case of HCC that was effectively treated with lenvatinib after a poor response to sorafenib. The tumor showed a high expression of fibroblast growth factor receptor 4, which is reportedly related to the sensitivity to lenvatinib in vitro.

Background: A type 2b immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related sclerosing cholangitis (SC) without autoimmune pancreatitis is a rare condition with IgG4-SC. While the variety of the imaging modalities have tested its usefulness in diagnosing the IgG4-SC, however, the usage of ultrasonography for the assessment of the response to steroidal therapy on the changes of bile duct wall thickness have not been reported in the condition. Therefore, the information of our recent case and reported cases have been summarized.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to better understand small bowel transit time (SBTT) during capsule endoscopy (CE) and how various clinical factors influence this time.
  • - Out of 397 patients, the average SBTT was found to be about 282.1 minutes, with older age and small bowel stenosis leading to longer transit times, while significant variability was noted in patients who had multiple CE tests.
  • - CE retention occurred in 13.3% of patients and was linked to the presence of small bowel lesions, highlighting the need to carefully interpret SBTT results considering individual differences.

Anion-conductive ionomers are used for electrolyte membranes in membrane-electrode assemblies and for binders in catalyst layers in anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). The conformations of these ionomers as well as their water distribution are important for designing new efficient/durable anion-conductive ionomers for AEMFCs. For a deeper understanding of the distribution of deuterium oxide (DO) as a function of depth, neutron reflectometry (NR) was carried out on thin films of an anion exchange ionomer, BAF-QAF, with a thickness of approximately 60 nm formed on a thermally formed SiO film on Si(100) and on a 20 nm Pt layer deposited on the SiO film at a temperature of 60 °C and relative humidities of 0, 50, 70, and 90%.
