Tumefactive demyelinating lesions (TDL), defined as inflammatory demyelinating lesions, may develop either during treatment for multiple sclerosis and related disorders or as the first demyelinating episode without any past medical history suggesting demyelination. If the latter, it would be so delicate to diagnose as demyelination. Especially in such situations, biopsy is often necessary in addition to neuroimaging for distinction TDL with tumorous or infectious diseases.

Article Synopsis
  • Low estrogen levels are thought to suppress uterine endometrial carcinoma, yet most cases arise after menopause, prompting a focus on declining androgen levels as a potential factor in its progression.
  • The study examines the role of androgen and its receptor (AR) by analyzing clinical data, culturing cancer cell lines, and using murine models, showing that higher androgen receptor expression and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels correlate with lower disease-free survival.
  • DHT reduces cancer cell proliferation and suppresses FOXP4 expression, suggesting that the androgen/AR system can inhibit malignant behavior in endometrial carcinoma, pointing to FOXP4 as a key target for future clinical strategies.

  • Super-selective adrenal venous sampling (ssAVS) helps collect blood from specific adrenal veins to diagnose conditions related to aldosterone overproduction.
  • A new method was developed using liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry to measure levels of aldosterone and related steroids in patients with different types of adrenal issues (unilateral adenoma vs. bilateral hyperplasia).
  • While the study found higher levels of 18-oxocortisol in patients with aldosterone-producing tumors, it concluded that these measurements alone aren't definitive for determining the type of condition due to variability between individuals.

Purpose: A notable advantage of laparoscopic colorectal surgery is that only a small incision at the extraction site is necessary, which is considered to be cosmetically beneficial. Meanwhile, the optimal extraction site for the resected specimen in laparoscopic colectomy is controversial in terms of cosmetic benefit. This randomized controlled trial compares midline and off-midline extraction sites in laparoscopic colectomy in patients with colon cancer, with consideration of cosmetic benefits as the primary endpoint.

  • The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a global rise in eating disorders, including in Japan, particularly among children under junior high school age.
  • An online survey revealed that many pediatricians see an increase in visits for eating disorders, with about half of the respondents reporting a significant rise.
  • Despite this increase, pediatricians face challenges in providing adequate psychotherapy and treatment, leading to overcrowding in psychiatric wards which affects the admission of children with other mental health issues.

Background: Since the human papillomavirus vaccines do not eliminate preexisting infections, nonsurgical alternative approaches to cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) have been required. We previously reported that FOXP4 (forkhead box transcription factor P4) promoted proliferation and inhibited squamous differentiation of CIN1-derived W12 cells. Since it was reported that FOXP expressions were regulated by the androgen/androgen receptor (AR) complex and AR was expressed on the CIN lesions, in this study we examined the effects of androgen on CIN progression.

  • Self-expandable metallic stents (SEMSs) are effective for treating malignant gastric outlet obstruction, showing an 86% success rate in improving oral intake among patients studied.
  • Key factors associated with longer overall survival post-SEMS placement include earlier cancer stages, better performance status, and receiving chemotherapy afterward, which greatly increases median survival times.
  • The study found that while SEMS treatment succeeded technically, additional chemotherapy significantly reduced stent dysfunction rates, especially in pancreatic cancer cases.

Despite the promising effectiveness of the coronavirus disease 2019 vaccination using an mRNA vaccine, the short efficacy duration and some poor responses to the vaccination remain major concerns. We aimed to clarify the monthly kinetics of the anti-SARS-CoV-2 spike receptor-binding domain antibody response after two doses of the BNT162b2 vaccine in a Japanese population. A chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay (CLIA) and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were used to measure the antibody levels in 81 Japanese adults (age, <65 years).

  • The expression of certain clock genes was found to be lower in the endometrium of women with recurrent spontaneous abortions, hinting at their importance in pregnancy.
  • Researchers created mice with specific deletions of uterine clock genes (cKO mice), which could implant embryos but failed to maintain a pregnancy due to suppressed function of uterine NK cells and poor placental vascular formation.
  • Progesterone treatment was able to sustain some pregnancies in cKO mice, promoting the recruitment of beneficial CD161-positive NK cells, but it did not fix the structural issues within the placenta, highlighting the role of the uterine clock system in maintaining pregnancy post-implantation.

Although the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is effective for preventing cervical cancers, this vaccine does not eliminate pre-existing infections, and alternative strategies have been warranted. Here, we report that FOXP4 is a new target molecule for differentiation therapy of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). An immunohistochemical study showed that FOXP4 was expressed in columnar epithelial, reserve, and immature squamous cells, but not in mature squamous cells of the normal uterine cervix.

Purpose: Risks for postoperative small bowel obstruction have been demonstrated in several reports, most of which indicated male sex was a risk factor, but with the reason remaining unknown. We tested the hypothesis that it could be because males have more visceral fat than females. This prospective observational study aims to examine risks of early postoperative small bowel obstruction (EPSBO) after colorectal cancer surgery and the association between visceral to subcutaneous fat area ratio (V/S ratio) and EPSBO.

Blood levels of the vitamin D (D) metabolites 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, and 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)D) are recognized indicators for the diagnosis of bone metabolism-related diseases, D deficiency-related diseases, and hypercalcemia, and are generally measured by liquid-chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) using an isotope dilution method. However, other D metabolites, such as 20-hydroxyvitamin D and lactone D, also show interesting biological activities and stable isotope-labeled derivatives are required for LC-MS/MS analysis of their concentrations in serum. Here, we describe a versatile synthesis of deuterium-labeled D metabolites using A-ring synthons containing three deuterium atoms.

Introduction: The interaction of CD155 with its ligand, the T cell immunoreceptor with Ig and ITIM domains (TIGIT), is being studied owing to its potential to act as a target in the treatment of various solid tumors. However, the relationship between CD155 and TIGIT in colorectal cancer (CRC) prognosis is not known. We hypothesized that the TIGIT-CD155 pathway suppresses the attack of T cells on tumors, thereby affecting CRC prognosis.
