Article Synopsis
  • Symmetric tissue alignment is essential for plant vascular functions, and in Arabidopsis roots, cytokinins help establish boundaries and promote cell growth for vascular symmetry.
  • Cell proliferation generates anisotropic compressive stress that smooths and symmetrizes the boundaries of vascular cells, a process not seen in animal tissues due to cell fluidity.
  • The GATA transcription factor HANABA-TARANU works with Arabidopsis response regulators to modulate cytokinin signaling, coordinating localized cell proliferation and mechanical stress to shape vascular tissue symmetry.

How cell size and number are determined during organ development remains a fundamental question in cell biology. Here, we identified a GRAS family transcription factor, called SCARECROW-LIKE28 (SCL28), with a critical role in determining cell size in Arabidopsis. SCL28 is part of a transcriptional regulatory network downstream of the central MYB3Rs that regulate G2 to M phase cell cycle transition.
