Aim: To determine the distance between the branching point of the left colic artery (LCA) and the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) by computed tomography (CT) scanning, for preoperative evaluation before laparoscopic colorectal operation.
Methods: From February 2004 to May 2005, 100 patients (63 men, 37 women) underwent angiography performed with a 16-scanner multi-detector row CT unit (Toshiba, Aquilion 16). All images were analyzed on a workstation (AZE Ltd, Virtual Place Advance 300).
To produce a proton conductive and durable polymer electrolyte membrane for fuel cell applications, a series of sulfonated polyimide ionomers containing aliphatic groups both in the main and in the side chains have been synthesized. The title polyimide ionomers 1 with the ion exchange capacity of 1.78-2.

The objective of this study was to clarify the space-time variations that occur in patients carriers of Brugada syndrome using Magnetocardiography and also compare them with cases of complete right-bundle branch block (CRBBB) and individuals without any dromotropic disorder (control group).
Methods And Results: Magnetocardiograms (MCGs) of Brugada syndrome patients (n = 16), CRBBB patients (n = 14), and members of a control group (n = 46) at rest were recorded.
Objective: To determine whether concentrations of heart-type fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP) measured before hospital discharge predict critical cardiac events in patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).
Patients: 92 consecutive patients with DCM were enrolled and followed up for four years.
Main Outcome Measures: Serum concentrations of H-FABP, brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), cardiac troponin T before hospital discharge and survival rate.
Background: Progressive aortic dilatation has prognostic significance in the Marfan syndrome.
Methods: To identify which patients were at high risk of rapid progression, we echocardiographically studied 43 patients (age 22 +/- 14 years) with the mean follow-up period of 5.2 +/- 3.
We present genome-wide definitive haplotypes, determined using a collection of 74 Japanese complete hydatidiform moles, each carrying a genome derived from a single sperm. The haplotypes incorporate 281,439 common SNPs, genotyped with a high throughput array-based oligonucleotide hybridization technique. Comparison of haplotypes inferred from pseudoindividuals (constructed from randomized mole pairs) with those of moles showed some switch errors in resolution of phases by the computational inference method.

Methods And Results: We examined the gene expression before and 4 months after the administration of a beta-blocker in 17 DCM patients. The messenger ribonucleic acid expression of collagen Types I and III (Col I and III) and transforming growth factor-beta(1) (TGF-beta(1)) of right ventricular tissues obtained by the endomyocardial biopsy were assessed by quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction.
Study Objectives: Ghrelin is a novel growth hormone (GH)-releasing peptide that also induces a positive energy balance by decreasing fat utility and stimulating feeding through GH-independent mechanisms. We investigated whether ghrelin improves cachexia and functional capacity in patients with COPD.
Methods: This is an open-label pilot study.
Background: Pluripotent mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) differentiate into a variety of cells, including cardiomyocytes and vascular endothelial cells. However, little information is available about the therapeutic potency of MSC transplantation in cases of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), an important cause of heart failure.
Methods And Results: We investigated whether transplanted MSCs induce myogenesis and angiogenesis and improve cardiac function in a rat model of DCM.

Euglena gracilis induced glyoxylate cycle enzymes when ethanol was fed as a sole carbon source. We purified, cloned and characterized a bifunctional glyoxylate cycle enzyme from E. gracilis (EgGCE).

It may enable us to detect the interesting and hidden data on useful drugs especially in the field of cardiovascular disease.
Methods And Results: We evaluated the current treatments for chronic heart failure (CHF) in our institute using a decision tree method of data mining and compared the results with those of large-scale clinical trials.
Background And Purpose: Adrenomedullin (AM) induces angiogenesis and inhibits cell apoptosis through the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt pathway. Transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) has been shown to improve neurological deficits after stroke in rats. We investigated whether AM enhances the therapeutic potency of MSC transplantation.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn this study, we examined the effects of exposure to phytoestrogen (daidzein), 17beta-estradiol (E2), diethylstilbestrol (DES) and staurosporin on the TM4 testicular cell line, using comprehensive analysis, such as cDNA microarray and two-dimension polyacrylamide gel electropholesis (2D-PAGE) analysis, and we demonstrated if these toxicogenomic analyses could classify the chemical compounds. First, RNA was extracted from TM4 cells that had been treated with daidzein (80 microM), DES, E2 (40 microM) and stauroporin (100 nM) for 30 min. We performed cDNA microarray analysis, and the expression ratio data thus obtained were then analyzed using hierarchical clustering.

Methods And Results: Immediately after hindlimb ischemia was created, rats were randomized to receive AM infusion plus bone marrow-derived mononuclear cell (MNC) transplantation (AM+MNC group), AM infusion alone (AM group), MNC transplantation alone (MNC group), or vehicle infusion (control group).
We evaluated changes in hematology and chemical profile, and the tissue retention of hematoporphyrin derivative (HpD) following the intravenous injection in dogs. HpD at concentrations of 1, 5, 10, and 15 mg/kg was intravenously injected to 16 dogs (n=4 each) and complete blood count (CBC) and blood chemistry were performed on days 1, 3, 5, and 7 after the injection. To examine tissue retention, HpD (5 mg/kg) was administered to 15 dogs and 3 dogs were euthanized on days 1, 2, 7, 14, and 28 after the injection, respectively, to collect the skin, muscle, small intestine, spleen, kidney and liver as tissue samples.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFForty-three patients with cardiac sarcoidosis were studied echocardiographically before and after (mean follow-up 88 months) steroid therapy to determine the effectiveness of corticosteroids to prevent left ventricular (LV) remodeling and improve LV contractility. In patients with initial LV ejection fractions (LVEFs) >or=55%, long-term steroid therapy showed preventive effects for LV remodeling and LV function. Patients with LVEF <54% showed significant reductions of LV volumes and LVEF improvement.

We investigated whether conscious sedation using a low dose of intravenous midazoram was safe and useful during the examination.
Methods: We asked 55 consecutive patients undergoing transesophageal echocardiography (44 with midazoram, mean age 59 +/- 16 years, and 11 without midazoram, mean age 62 +/- 8 years) and the examiners about the effects of midazoram using a questionnaire.

We investigated the effects of ghrelin on left ventricular (LV) function, exercise capacity, and muscle wasting in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF).
Methods And Results: Human synthetic ghrelin (2 microg/kg twice a day) was intravenously administered to 10 patients with CHF for 3 weeks.
The objective of this study was to collect oocytes from ovaries of bitches with pyometra and to characterize the quality of the oocytes recovered. In 10 of 12 cases of pyometra, follicles with a diameter of 500 microm to 1mm were observed in the ovaries. A total of 710 oocytes were collected from 10 bitches by puncturing individual follicles after slicing the ovarian tissues.
