Purpose: This study aims to determine dosimetric influence of rectal gas in carbon ion radiation therapy (CIRT) for prostate cancer and to establish a procedure for removal rectal gas in clinical scenarios.
Materials And Methods: We analyzed 18 prostate cancer cases with bulky rectal gas. The dose distribution was recalculated on computed tomography (CT) with bulky rectal gas (gasCT) after creating the initial plan on a CT without bulky rectal gas, and the doses were transformed using a displacement vector field.
Background/aim: Liver metastasis (LM), pre-dominant in pancreatic cancer, is associated with a dismal 5-year survival rate. Reports on the presence of fatty liver and liver fibrosis in LM are conflicting. Although liver biopsy is the standard diagnostic method for fibrosis, alternative, less invasive scoring models have been explored.

Strain-dependent variations in STZ-induced diabetes susceptibility have been reported in mice. Differences in STZ-induced diabetes susceptibility are putatively related to pancreatic beta-cell fragility via DNA damage response.

The Kumamoto shaker/waltzer (ksv) mouse is a model of deafness resulting from a splice-site mutation in Myo6. While ksv/ksv homozygous mice are deaf due to cochlear hair cell stereocilia fusion at the neonatal stage, the hearing phenotypes of ksv/+ heterozygous mice have been less clear.

We prospectively collected and analyzed over five years to investigate the outcomes of localized PCa treated with CIRT at our institution.
Patients And Methods: The study included patients with histologically confirmed prostate adenocarcinoma.
The aquaporin-4 (AQP4) water channel is essential in neurofluid dynamics. AQP4 loss impairs solute exchange between the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and interstitial fluid (ISF). However, whether AQP4 expression affects solute clearance from the CSF space to the extracranial space remains unclear.

Despite numerous studies examining the incidence of extrapancreatic malignancies in patients with intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm, limited data exist on the prevalence of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm in those with gastrointestinal malignancies. Given that intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm is a known risk factor for pancreatic cancer, this study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm in patients who underwent radical surgery for extrapancreatic gastrointestinal malignancies and its impact on pancreatic cancer development.

Materials And Methods: Thirty patients with liver tumors were analyzed. Three treatment plans were developed for each case: one with a rotating gantry with a 360° angle, one with fixed ports of 0° and 90° with a ±20° couch rolling setting, and one with fixed ports of 45° and 90° with a ±20° couch rolling setting.
Background/aim: The current study aimed to evaluate a treatment planning method that is robust against tumor growth and to assess its effectiveness in particle therapy for head and neck cancer.
Patients And Methods: The proposed method optimizes dose distribution by replacing the relative stopping power ratio (rSPR) of the clinical target volume (CTV) cavity region with a tumor-equivalent rSPR (Condition 1). The optimized initial treatment plan template was then recalculated using in-room CT images acquired in the same treatment position, and the doses to the tumor and organs at risk were compared with those in the initial treatment plan.
Conventional rodent neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) models using patient-derived immunoglobulin G (IgG) are potentially affected by the differences between the human and rodent aquaporin-4 (AQP4) extracellular domains (ECDs). We hypothesized that the humanization of AQP4 ECDs would make the rodent model lesions closer to human NMOSD pathology. Humanized-AQP4-expressing (hAQP4) rats were generated using genome-editing technology, and the human AQP4-specific monoclonal antibody (mAb) or six patient-derived IgGs were introduced intraperitoneally into hAQP4 rats and wild-type Lewis (WT) rats after immunization with myelin basic protein and complete Freund's adjuvant.

However, to date, a correlation between the dose and volume parameters of the 12 fractions of CIRT for prostate cancer and rectal bleeding has not been shown.

Mouse C57BL/6 (B6) sub-strains are the major model system for experimental cerebral malaria (ECM) as they show similar pathophysiology to human cerebral malaria after infection with the rodent malaria parasite Plasmodium berghei ANKA. This model system has been used to analyze the molecular mechanisms of cerebral malaria.

The study objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of SEMS placement as a BTS strategy for both right- and left-sided OCRC.
Patients And Methods: We retrospectively compared the short- and long-term outcomes of patients with OCRC who underwent placement of a SEMS versus a trans-nasal/anal decompression tube (DCT).
Pathogenic variants in GFPT1, encoding a key enzyme to synthesize UDP-N-acetylglucosamine (UDP-GlcNAc), cause congenital myasthenic syndrome (CMS). We made a knock-in (KI) mouse model carrying a frameshift variant in Gfpt1 exon 9, simulating that found in a patient with CMS. As Gfpt1 exon 9 is exclusively expressed in striated muscles, Gfpt1-KI mice were deficient for Gfpt1 only in skeletal muscles.

To the best of our knowledge, 31 cases of choroidal metastasis from RCC have been reported in the English literature as of January 31, 2024. Nevertheless, physicians need to be vigilant in recognizing this condition, as its progression impacts the quality of life (QOL) of affected patients.

Carbon ion radiation therapy (CIRT) has shown favorable tumor control in various malignancies, including radioresistant tumors. Therefore, we retrospectively evaluated the clinical outcomes of CIRT for nmCRPC.

Materials And Methods: A polybinary tissue model method was used for the calibration of CT numbers and SPR. As a verification by dose calculation, we created a virtual phantom to which the CT-SPR calibration table was applied.
Glycoside hydrolase (GH) family 13 is among the main families of enzymes acting on starch; recently, subfamily 47 of GH13 (GH13_47) has been established. The crystal structure and function of a GH13_47 enzyme from Bacteroides ovatus has only been reported to date. This enzyme has α-amylase activity, while the GH13_47 enzymes comprise approximately 800-900 amino acid residues which are almost double those of typical α-amylases.

Here, we report three patients with salivary gland cancers originating from a herniated sublingual gland. All tumors were detected as palpable submandibular masses, located anterior to the submandibular gland, medial to the mandible, and lateral to the mylohyoid muscle, with contact with the sublingual gland through a mylohyoid muscle defect.
