Comparison of Adverse Event Profiles of Amphotericin B Formulations Using Real-World Data.

Amphotericin B deoxycholate (AMPH-B) is a polyene macrolide with antifungal activity. Liposomal AMPH-B (L-AMB) was developed to reduce side effects while maintaining antifungal activity. This study was aimed at evaluating and comparing the adverse event profiles of AMPH-B and L-AMB using a spontaneous reporting system.

Comparison of Analgesic Effect of Local Anesthetic Injection for Pain Relief During Peripheral Venous Insertion in Adult Surgical Patients: A Prospective Observational Study.

Purpose: Intradermal injection of local anesthetic has been reported to have greater analgesic effect for peripheral venous catheter (PVC) insertion than topical application in adult surgical patients. However, the injection of local anesthetic itself is a painful procedure compared to topical application. We compared the analgesic effect of a lidocaine-prilocaine patch with intradermal injection of 2 % lidocaine on pain intensity at the time of analgesia and PVC insertion as assessed by a visual analog scale (VAS) in adult patients.

Validating the short-version European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire for community-dwelling older adults in Japan.

The European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire (HLS-EU-Q47) is available in multiple languages, and shortened versions have also been developed. This study aimed to examine the reliability and validity of the short version of the questionnaire (HLS-Q12) developed for community-dwelling older adults in Japan. The HLS-Q12 was developed using 12 of the 47 items of the Japanese version of the HLS-EU-Q47.

Identification of Drugs and Patient Profiles at Risk for Severe Skin Injuries Due to Extravasation: Analysis of a Spontaneous Reporting System.

This study aimed to identify risk factors and combinations thereof that are associated with severe skin injuries due to the extravasation of injectable drugs. A cross-sectional study using the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report database was conducted according to the RECORD-PE checklist. Adverse event reports related to necrosis, ulcers, or erosions due to extravasation were considered "with severe skin injury," and others were considered "without severe skin injury.

Hypoglycemic effects of mountain caviar extract and inhibitory mechanism of saponins, including momordin Ic, on glucose absorption.

Mountain caviar is a fruit of Kochia scoparia that contains momordin Ic as a major saponin constituent. Its extract (MCE) has been shown to suppress blood glucose elevations in the human oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) as well as increases in blood glucose in OGTT, gastric emptying (GE), and glucose incorporation in the small intestine in rats. However, the effects of MCE and momordin Ic on glucose absorption in mice and these action mechanisms have not been examined for more than 2 decades.

Relationships between acute generalized eruptive pustulosis, age, sex, primary disease, and prescription medications: Further analysis of the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report database.

Background: Acute generalized eruptive pustulosis (AGEP) is a rare, but serious, drug-related adverse event. This study aimed to determine the relationships between AGEP and age, sex, primary disease, and prescription medications using a database of adverse drug events, namely, the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report (JADER) database.

Methods: In this retrospective observational study, we analyzed AGEP reports extracted from the JADER database based on the preferred term for AGEP (code 10048799).

Survey of community and hospital pharmacist involvement in outpatient chemotherapy using Japanese health information data.

In this study, information on injectable anticancer drug use and additional fee for enhanced collaboration (AEC) and additional fee for specific drug management guidance 2 (ASD2) claims from the NDB Open Data Japan (NODJ) dataset and the number of patients with cancer according to sex and age from the National Cancer Registry (NCR) dataset were integrated and evaluated to determine the current status and challenges in pharmacist interventions for patients receiving cancer treatment. The NODJ data, including receipt data billed from 2020 to 2021, were obtained from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare website. The use of injectable anticancer drugs decreased relative to the number of cancer patients aged ≥ 75 years compared to those aged < 75 years.

Effect of acid suppressant medications on the laxative action of magnesium preparations in patients with opioid-induced constipation: A pharmacovigilance analysis of the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System.

Magnesium oxide is widely used for treating opioid-induced constipation, a serious analgesic-associated problem. Opioid analgesic users are often prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which are sometimes combined with acid suppressants to prevent gastrointestinal adverse events. Magnesium preparations combined with acid suppressants may diminish magnesium preparations' laxative effect.

Evaluation of neuroleptic malignant syndrome induced by antipsychotic drugs using spontaneous reporting system.

Adverse events (AEs) of antipsychotic drugs include neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), which presents complex clinical symptoms, resulting in a fatal outcome. In this study, the association between antipsychotic drugs and NMS was comprehensively evaluated by cluster and association analyses using the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report (JADER) database. The analyses were performed using 20 typical antipsychotics (TAPs) alongside 9 atypical antipsychotics (AAPs).

Background: Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) has been reported as the development of drugs with immunomodulatory properties, such as anticancer, immunosuppressive, and biological agents, has accelerated. Profiles and Outcomes of Skin Injuries Caused by Injectable Drug Extravasation: An Analysis of the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report Database.

Extravasation occurs when injectable drugs leak out of the blood vessels, damaging the surrounding tissues and causing a variety of skin injuries. This study aimed to comprehensively analyze extravasation risk, skin injury profiles, and outcomes for suspect drugs from the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report (JADER) database. Adverse events were defined according to the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities/Japanese version; the term extravasation (Standardized MedDRA Query Code: 20000136) was used in this analysis.

Evaluation of neurotoxicity of anticancer drugs using nematode Caenorhabditis elegans as a model organism.

It is well established that platinum-based drugs, including oxaliplatin (L-OHP) and cisplatin (CDDP), as well as microtubule inhibitors paclitaxel (PTX) and vincristine (VCR), are associated with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). In this study, we examined and compared the characteristics of neuropathies induced by L-OHP, CDDP, PTX, and VCR to evaluate whether Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) could serve as a model organism for human CIPN.

Formation of W/O emulsion using hydrophilic nanoparticles by three-phase emulsification and its energetic analysis.

In this study, we investigated the characteristics of water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions formed by hydrophilic nanoparticles in three-phase emulsification and discussed their stability by performing an energy analysis. W/O emulsions prepared using the three-phase emulsification method are stable in several systems, even in those with a high internal-phase ratio of water up to 85 wt%. Hydrophilic nanoparticles can exist in the internal water phase independently, and the emulsifying action does not depend on the concentration of nanoparticles or the state of the internal water phase.

Unilateral Lumbosacral Facet Abnormality Resembling Facet Interlocking: A Case Report.

We report a rare case presenting radiculopathy caused by unilateral lumbosacral facet abnormality resembling facet interlocking. The patient was a 57-year-old man with no medical and traumatic history. He began to exhibit numbness below his left ankle followed by pain at the left buttock with no obvious causes.

Background: To reduce pharmacy-related medical expenses, it is necessary to cut drug costs, potentially by increasing generic drug usage. This study analyzes the correlation between generic drug usage and monthly personal income by examining prescriptions for individual drugs.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study based on the data set from the National Database of Health Insurance Claims and Specific Health Checkups of Japan Open Data Japan and the Basic Survey on Wage Structure.

Drowsiness following ondansetron given the day after general anesthesia for postoperative nausea: a pediatric case report.

Background: Ondansetron is an antiemetic drug that is useful not only for prevention but also for the treatment of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). We report a rare case of drowsiness in a child after using ondansetron for nausea on the day after general anesthesia.

Case Presentation: A 5-year-old boy underwent circumcision under general anesthesia and suffered from postoperative nausea and vomiting.

Anti-melanogenic effects of glucosylceramides and elasticamide derived from rice oil by-products in melanoma cells, melanocytes, and human skin.

Glucosylceramides (GlcCer), which are present in many edible plants, suppress melanin production in mouse melanocytes. Rice GlcCer consist of multiple molecules that comprise different types of sphingoid bases as well as diverse lengths and stereotypes of free fatty acids. Adjacent to the GlcCer fraction, there are free ceramides (Cer) as minor constituents.

Long-term ice phenology records spanning up to 578 years for 78 lakes around the Northern Hemisphere.

In recent decades, lakes have experienced unprecedented ice loss with widespread ramifications for winter ecological processes. The rapid loss of ice, resurgence of winter biology, and proliferation of remote sensing technologies, presents a unique opportunity to integrate disciplines to further understand the broad spatial and temporal patterns in ice loss and its consequences. Here, we summarize ice phenology records for 78 lakes in 12 countries across North America, Europe, and Asia to permit the inclusion and harmonization of in situ ice phenology observations in future interdisciplinary studies.

In Vivo Label-Free Observation of Tumor-Related Blood Vessels in Small Animals Using a Newly Designed Photoacoustic 3D Imaging System.

Photoacoustic (PA) technology can be used for non-invasive imaging of blood vessels. In this paper, we report on our prototype PA imaging system with a newly designed ultrasound sensor and its visualization performance of microvascular in animal. We fabricated an experimental system for animals using a high-frequency sensor.

Tear Strip Meniscometry and Its Clinical Application: Analysis of More Than 2000 Cases.

Purpose: To evaluate the association of strip meniscometry tear meniscus volume measurement with signs and symptoms related to dry eye.

Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 2234 consecutive outpatients and used dry eye symptomatology and related ocular surface examinations, including the Schirmer test, fluorescein tear film break-up time (BUT), corneal fluorescein vital staining and strip meniscometry. The strip meniscometry cut-off was estimated using a receiver operating characteristic analysis.
