Morphology of Nasal Septal Deviation in Obstructive Sleep Apnea Patients and its Treatment Method.

Objectives: Nasal septal deviation can cause nasal breathing issues, contribute to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) development, and often hinders successful CPAP therapy. We hypothesized that although prevalent in the general population, nasal septal deviations differ structurally between OSA and non-OSA patients. This study evaluated nasal septal deviation morphology in OSA versus non-OSA patients using computed tomography (CT).

Ruxolitinib in steroid-refractory acute graft-vs-host disease: Japanese subgroup analysis of the randomized REACH2 trial.

Acute graft-versus-host disease (aGvHD) is a major complication after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in Japan and other countries. Nearly one-third of patients do not respond to standard systemic steroid therapy and no standard second-line treatment has been established in Japan. We report efficacy and safety findings of ruxolitinib versus best available therapy (BAT) from a subgroup analysis of the international, phase 3 REACH2 study in Japanese patients with steroid-refractory aGvHD.

Molecular aggregation by hydrogen bonding in cold-crystallization behavior of mixed nucleobases analyzed by temperature-controlled infrared spectroscopy.

The cold-crystallization behaviors of dodecyl-substituted nucleobases (adenine, uracil, and thymine) were analyzed. The dodecyl derivative from uracil alone did not exhibit cold crystallization; however, a mixture of adenine and uracil derivatives at a molar ratio of 1 : 1 exhibited cold crystallization. These results are similar to the thermal behavior of dodecyl derivatives of adenine and thymine alone and in mixtures reported in a previous study.

Improved Long-Term Net Survival after Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation in Patients with Hematologic Malignancies over Two Decades.

Allogeneic (allo-) hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) has evolved as a curative therapy for hematologic malignancies and diseases, with practice changes over the past 2 decades. This study aimed to evaluate the change in 5-year net survival (NS) of allo-HCT recipients in a population-based cohort over the past 2 decades, which allows the estimation of a more HCT-specific long-term survival rate by considering background mortality changes. This study included 42,064 patients with hematologic malignancies who underwent their first allo-HCT in Japan between 2000 and 2018 and were reported to the Transplant Registry Unified Management Program.

Association between skipping breakfast and prediabetes among adolescence in Japan: Results from A-CHILD study.

Objective: Adolescents with prediabetes are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes in later life. It is necessary to identify risk factors for prediabetes in adolescents. This study aimed to examine the association between skipping breakfast and prediabetes among adolescents in Japan.

Relationship of Lesion Location to Postoperative Steroid Use in Eosinophilic Chronic Rhinosinusitis.

Objectives: Eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (ECRS) is known to recur after surgery. The treatment choice for recurrent ECRS, such as oral steroids or biological agents, must be chosen carefully, and identifying the lesion location may be useful. This study aimed to evaluate the postoperative course of ECRS patients and assess the relationship between endoscopic lesion location and postoperative oral steroid use.

Identification, expression, and purification of DNA cytosine 5-methyltransferases with short recognition sequences.

Background: DNA methyltransferases (MTases) are enzymes that induce methylation, one of the representative epigenetic modifications of DNA, and are also useful tools for analyzing epigenomes. However, regarding DNA cytosine 5-methylation, MTases identified so far have drawbacks in that their recognition sequences overlap with those for intrinsic DNA methylation in mammalian cells and/or that the recognition sequence is too long for fine epigenetic mapping. To identify MTases with short recognition sequences that never overlap with the CG dinucleotide, we systematically investigated the 25 candidate enzymes identified using a database search, which showed high similarity to known cytosine 5-MTases recognizing short sequences.

Cold crystallization and photo-induced thermal behavior of alkyl-derivatized diarylethene molecules.

The thermal behavior of alkylated diarylethene molecules (2,3-bis(2,4,5-trimethyl-3-thienyl)--alkylmaleimides; DAE-C) was investigated. DAE-C1 and DAE-C2 exhibited cold crystallization, which is a heat-storage phenomenon. In addition, DAE-C showed photoisomerization; the open-ring isomer O-DAE-C was formed by visible light irradiation and transformed to the closed-ring isomer C-DAE-C by UV light irradiation.

Objectives: Eltrombopag, a thrombopoietin-receptor agonist, stimulates hematopoiesis in patients with acquired aplastic anemia (AA). Cytomorphologic changes in bone marrow after eltrombopag administration are still unclear. This study examined the effect of eltrombopag on cytomorphologic findings using data from prior phase 2 studies (E1201 and E1202).

Impact of exposure to secondhand smoke on the risk of obesity in early adolescence.

Background: Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) might be associated with obesity in children. This study aimed to evaluate whether continuous, quit, or start exposure to SHS was associated with obesity risk in early adolescents.

Methods: We used population-based longitudinal data of primary school students in Adachi City, Tokyo, Japan, in 2018 (4th grade) and 2020 (6th grade) and studied 3605 students.

Association between heat exposure and hospitalization for diabetic ketoacidosis, hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state, and hypoglycemia in Japan.

Background: An increase in extreme heat events has been reported along with global warming. Heat exposure in ambient temperature is associated with all-cause diabetes mortality and all-cause hospitalization in diabetic patients. However, the association between heat exposure and hospitalization for hyperglycemic emergencies, such as diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHS), and hypoglycemia is unclear.

Effect of Cryopreservation in Unrelated Bone Marrow and Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplantation in the Era of the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Update from the Japan Marrow Donor Program.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, donor grafts are frequently cryopreserved to ensure that a graft is available before starting a conditioning regimen. However, there have been conflicting reports on the effect of cryopreservation on transplantation outcomes. Also, the impact of cryopreservation may differ in bone marrow (BM) transplantation (BMT) and peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) transplantation (PBSCT).

Neurolymphomatosis in follicular lymphoma: an autopsy case report.

Neurolymphomatosis is a neurological manifestation of lymphoma that involves the cranial or spinal peripheral nerves, nerve roots, and plexus with direct invasion of neoplastic cells. Neurolymphomatosis is rare among patients with low-grade lymphoma. We report an autopsied case of neurolymphomatosis that arose from follicular lymphoma.

Alkyl substituent-dependent systematic change in cold crystallization of azo molecules.

The thermal behavior of alkyl-derivatized 1-(2,4-dimethylphenylazo)-4-naphthol and 1-(2,4-dimethylphenylazo)-2-naphthol (2,4-DM-4-C and 2,4-DM-2-C, respectively) was investigated. The change in the position of the alkyl substituent led to a variation in the thermal behavior, including the cold crystallization, which is a heat-storing phenomenon. In addition, a comprehensive study of the alkyl chain length revealed that 2,4-DM-4-C had better crystallinity and exhibited cold crystallization with short alkyl chains.

Transitional and Long-Term Care System in Japan and Current Challenges for Stroke Patient Rehabilitation.

In Japan, the national medical insurance system and long-term care insurance (LTCI) system cover rehabilitation therapy for patients with acute, convalescent, and chronic stroke. Medical insurance covers early and multidisciplinary rehabilitation therapy during acute phase hospitalizations. Patients requiring assistance in their activities of daily living (ADL) after hospitalization are transferred to kaifukuki (convalescent) rehabilitation wards (KRW), which the medical insurance system has also covered.

Predictive value of surveillance cultures for bacteremia caused by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacterales among patients with hematological diseases.

Purpose: Due to the increasing prevalence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacterales, empirical therapies with cefepime or piperacillin/tazobactam for hematology patients with febrile neutropenia have become ineffective. Carbapenems should be administered as soon as possible in such patients with ESBL bacteremia. If the surveillance culture results are consistent with the blood culture findings, the time to adequate treatment initiation can be shortened.

Decision Analysis for Unrelated Bone Marrow Transplantation or Immediate Cord Blood Transplantation for Patients with Philadelphia Chromosome-Negative Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in First Complete Remission.

An HLA-matched relative is the first-choice donor for patients with Philadelphia chromosome (Ph)-negative acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in first complete remission (CR1). The most promising alternative donor is thought to be an HLA-matched unrelated donor (MUD) in patients who do not have an HLA-matched related donor. Cord blood transplantation (CBT) is an alternative option.

Impact of School Closure Due to COVID-19 on the Social-Emotional Skills of Japanese Pre-school Children.

This study examines the impact on the social-emotional skills of Japanese pre-school children from downsizing of school activities in conjunction with voluntary school closures due to the first wave of COVID-19, in 2020. Participants included 32 children aged 4-5 years old from three pre-schools in Tokyo, Japan, where strict lockdown was not implemented and voluntary school closure was recommended. Child social-emotional skills was assessed by classroom teachers using Devereux Student Strengths Assessment mini (DESSA-mini) three times: November 2019, January 2020 (before the COVID-19), and March 2020 (during the first COVID-19 wave).

Assessment of cellular response to mitogens in long-term allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation survivors.

Infection is one of the major causes of death in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) survivors. Precise assessments of immune function after HSCT will be critical in establishing appropriate treatment and prophylaxis, such as re-vaccination. Although several surrogate markers for prediction of clinical outcomes after HSCT have been proposed, definitive markers of immune reconstitution and data on those markers in long-term survivors are lacking.

A multicenter, phase II study of R-THP-COP therapy for elderly patients with newly diagnosed, advanced-stage, indolent B-cell lymphoma.

The optimal combined chemotherapy regimen with rituximab has yet to be established for elderly patients with advanced-stage indolent B-cell lymphoma (B-NHL). A multicenter study was performed to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of R-THP-COP therapy in elderly patients (aged 70-79 years) with newly diagnosed advanced-stage indolent B-NHL using the complete response rate (%CR) as the primary endpoint. Patients with newly diagnosed, clinical stage III/IV, indolent B-NHL, aged 70-79 years, with a performance status of 0-2 were eligible for this study.

[Bacillus cereus bacteremia in patients with hematological disorders].

Bacillus cereus bacteremia is an infectious disease that may sometimes be fatal with a rapid clinical course. We performed a retrospective analysis on 12 patients with Bacillus cereus bacteremia recruited from January 2010 to March 2015.
