Molecules that contain bonds whose length significantly deviates from the average are of interest in the context of understanding the nature and limits of the chemical bonds. However, it is difficult to disentangle the individual contributions of the multiple factors that give rise to such bond-length deviations as reports on such molecules remain scarce. In the present study, we have succeeded in synthesizing hexafluorodihalocubanes of the type CFX () (X = Cl (), Br (), I ()), which represent a new series of molecules with unusual C(sp)-halogen bonds.

The eagle jugular syndrome as the cause of delayed intracranial hemorrhage after microvascular decompression for hemifacial spasm: A case report.

Background: Eagle syndrome is a rare disorder whereby an elongated styloid process (ESP) causes not only some otolaryngological symptoms, but also cerebrovascular events caused by compression of the carotid artery. In recent years a syndrome, denominated as Eagle jugular syndrome, involving internal jugular vein (IJV) compression caused by an ESP has been proposed as a variation of Eagle syndrome. Clinical impact of the Eagle jugular syndrome on neurosurgical procedures has not been reported yet.

Paroxysmal Atrioventricular Block in a Relatively Young Patient with COVID-19.

Cardiac involvement has been reported in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We herein report a 41-year-old man who presented with recurrent paroxysmal atrioventricular block without showing significant cardiac injuries or comorbidities. The patient was diagnosed with COVID-19 and admitted to our hospital, where he was noted to have paroxysmal atrioventricular block.

[Infarct Exclusion Repair and Mitral Valve Replacement for Inferior Postinfarction Ventricular Septal Perforation].

We performed infarct exclusion repair of ventricular septal perforation(VSP) in a 63-year-old woman who was diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction(AMI) of the inferior wall. As VSP existed behind a fragile posterior papillary muscle, we excised the papillary muscle and sutured a bovine pericardial patch to exclude the infarct area of the whole septum and a part of the inferior wall. Mitral valve replacement and coronary artery bypass were also performed.

Impact of first documented rhythm on cost-effectiveness of extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Objectives: Recommendations for extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) state that appropriate patient selection is important for the sake of efficacy and cost-effectiveness of ECPR. It is not known whether first documented rhythm plays a prominent role in economic outcomes of patients with cardiac arrest who received ECPR.

Expression of GLUT1 in Pseudopalisaded and Perivascular Tumor Cells Is an Independent Prognostic Factor for Patients With Glioblastomas.

Glioblastomas are highly aggressive brain tumors with a particularly poor prognosis. Glucose transporter-1 (GLUT1/SLC2A1), a uniporter that is expressed by various carcinomas and may be involved in malignant neoplasm glycometabolism, may also be related to prognosis in glioblastomas. GLUT1 is essential to central nervous system glycometabolism.

Rabbit dehydrogenase/reductase SDR family member 11 (DHRS11): Its identity with acetohexamide reductase with broad substrate specificity and inhibitor sensitivity, different from human DHRS11.

Human dehydrogenase/reductase SDR family member 11 (DHRS11) has been recently reported to be an NADP-dependent 3(17)β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, and its orthologs are predicted in genomic analyses of various animals. Among them, the amino acid sequence of predicted rabbit DHRS11 shares 92% identity with that of human DHRS11 and matches peptide sequences (composed of total 87 amino acids) of rabbit heart acetohexamide reductase (RHAR) previously reported. However, the physiological role of RHAR remains unknown, because its known substrates are only acetohexamide and 1,4-naphthoquinone.

Endoscopic Endonasal Removal of Primary/Recurrent Meningiomas in the Medial Optic Canal: Surgical Technique and Long-Term Visual Outcome.

Background: Tuberculum sellae meningiomas frequently extend into the optic canals, which leads to a progressive longitudinal visual loss. Therefore, in addition to tumor removal, unroofing and exploration inside the optic canal are important procedures.

Objective: To perform endoscopic endonasal tumor removal with optic canal decompression for small primary or recurrent meningiomas associated with a progressive visual loss at the inferior-medial optic canal, which corresponded to a blind corner in the ipsilateral pterional/subfrontal approach.

[Head Injuries due to Ladder-related Falls].

We examined the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients who had fallen from ladders and statistically analyzed the prognostic factors, highlighting the impact of the coexistence of head injuries on their prognoses. The clinical records of patients who had experienced ladder-related falls who were admitted to the Advanced Emergency Medical Service Center at Kurume University Hospital between April 2013 and August 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. A total of 86 patients were enrolled.

Intraoperative monitoring systems that utilize various evoked potentials for the detection and/or preservation of cranial nerves have become increasingly common due to recent technical and commercial developments, particularly during skull base surgeries. We established a novel system for the intraoperative monitoring of the extraocular motor nerves (eOMNs) using a piezoelectric device capable of detecting imperceptible vibrations induced by ocular movement, with sensors placed on the eyelids alone. We first evaluated the efficacy and reliability of this device for the intraoperative monitoring of eOMNs in two Beagle dogs.

Double pituitary adenomas associated with persistent trigeminal artery: a rare case report and the review of literature.

Multiple pituitary adenomas are rare. We present a quite unique case of double pituitary adenomas associated with persistent trigeminal artery (PTA) treated by endoscopic surgery. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report in the literature.

A 61-year-old, HIV-negative, immunocompetent woman was admitted to our hospital for significant weight loss, painful swelling of her right cheek, and rapid growth of a tumor in the right hard palate. A CT scan revealed a neoplastic lesion in the right maxillary sinus, extending to the surrounding soft bone tissue and oral cavity, as well as multiple osteolytic lesions in the skull. A pathologic examination revealed that the neoplastic cells in the oral cavity were plasmablasts tending to appear as differentiated plasma cells.

Human dehydrogenase/reductase (SDR family) member 11 is a novel type of 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase.

We report characterization of a member of the short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase superfamily encoded in a human gene, DHRS11. The recombinant protein (DHRS11) efficiently catalyzed the conversion of the 17-keto group of estrone, 4- and 5-androstenes and 5α-androstanes into their 17β-hydroxyl metabolites with NADPH as a coenzyme. In contrast, it exhibited reductive 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity toward 5β-androstanes, 5β-pregnanes, 4-pregnenes and bile acids.

A pig-to-mouse coronary artery transplantation model for investigating the pathogenicity of anti-pig antibody.

Background: Rejection of Gal-free (GTKO) donor pig cardiac xenografts is strongly associated with vascular non-Gal antibody binding, endothelial cell (EC) injury, and activation and microvascular thrombosis. We adopted a pig-to-SCID/beige small animal transplant model to compare the pathogenicity of baboon and human anti-pig antibody.

Human carbonyl reductase 1 (CBR1), a member of the short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase superfamily, reduces anthracycline anticancer drugs to their less potent anticancer C-13 hydroxy metabolites, which are linked with pathogenesis of cardiotoxicity, a side effect of the drugs. CBR1 inhibitors are thought to be promising agents for adjuvant therapy with a twofold beneficial effect in prolonging the anticancer efficacy of the anthracyclines while decreasing cardiotoxicity. In order to search for new potential inhibitors of CBR1, we synthesized a series of des-methoxyphenyl derivatives of (Z)-2-(4-methoxyphenylimino)-7-hydroxy-N-(pyridin-2-yl)-2H-chromene-3-carboxamide (1) that was developed previously as a potent inhibitor of aldo-keto reductase (AKR) 1B10 and AKR1B1.

Nontraumatic aneurysm rupture following an endoscopic third ventriculostomy and ventricular drainage: Case report of a rare complication.

Background: Although endoscopic third ventriculostomy is a safe procedure, the authors report a case of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage as an unusual and serious complication of an endoscopic third ventriculostomy and ventricular drainage.

Case Description: A 60-year-old male presented with obstructive hydrocephalus caused by midbrain tumors was admitted to our hospital. Endoscopic third ventriculostomy and external ventricular drainage were successfully performed.

Comparison of neointimal coverage and extra-stent lumen between sirolimus and everolimus-eluting stent using optical coherence tomography.

The external lumen of a stent [defined as extra-stent lumen (ESL)] assessed by optical coherence tomography (OCT) may be related to the risk of thrombus formation after sirolimus-eluting stent (SES) implantation. An everolimus-eluting stent (EES) might provide relatively minimal inflammatory reaction and appropriate neointimal coverage. The purpose of this study was to compare the neointimal thickness and ESL between SES and EES.

Primary meningeal melanocytoma of the sellar region: review of the literature and differential diagnosis with special reference to angiographical features.

Purpose: Primary intracranial melanocytomas are rare neoplasms, especially in the sellar region. Intracranial melanocytoma is usually a dural-based tumor, fed by dural arterial branches in a manner similar to meningioma. Primary sellar melanocytoma may be misdiagnosed as hemorrhagic pituitary macroadenoma, spindle cell oncocytoma, and intrasellar meningioma.

Mapping of the gynoecy in bitter gourd (Momordica charantia) using RAD-seq analysis.

Momordica charantia is a monoecious plant of the Cucurbitaceae family that has both male and female unisexual flowers. Its unique gynoecious line, OHB61-5, is essential as a maternal parent in the production of F1 cultivars. To identify the DNA markers for this gynoecy, a RAD-seq (restriction-associated DNA tag sequencing) analysis was employed to reveal genome-wide DNA polymorphisms and to genotype the F2 progeny from a cross between OHB61-5 and a monoecious line.

Proposal of a novel index for selection of optimal annuloplasty ring size for tricuspid annuloplication.

Background: Optimal ring size in tricuspid annuloplasty (TAP) surgery to treat functional tricuspid regurgitation (TR) was investigated because optimal ring size remains undefined.

Methods And Results: Sixty seven patients who underwent TAP at our institution were retrospectively studied. Tricuspid Annuloplasty Ring size Index (TARI) was defined as implanted tricuspid annuloplasty ring size divided by body surface area (BSA).
