Efficacy and safety of early administration of remdesivir in hemodialysis patients with COVID-19: A case report and literature review.

Rationale: Although the mortality of severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has decreased after the emergence of the Omicron variant, it remains high in patients on hemodialysis (HD). Remdesivir (RDV) is considered as the first line drug for hospitalized COVID-19 patients, however the evidence regarding the usage in HD patients is lacking because clinical trials of RDV have excluded HD patients for safety reasons. Thus, accumulation of knowledge on the regimen, efficacy, and tolerability of RDV in HD patients is important.

Fatty Acid β-Oxidation May Be Associated with the Erythropoietin Resistance Index in Stable Patients Undergoing Haemodialysis.

Background/objectives: Lipid metabolism and adiponectin modulate erythropoiesis in vitro and in general population studies and may also affect responsiveness to erythropoietin in patients undergoing haemodialysis (HD). However, little is known about the impact of lipid-associated biomarkers on reticulocyte production and erythropoietin resistance index (ERI) in patients undergoing HD. Therefore, we aimed to investigate their impacts in 167 stable patients undergoing HD.

Long-term observation of patients with advanced late-onset Pompe disease undergoing enzyme replacement therapy: A 15-year observation in a single center.

Background: There have been few descriptions in the literature on long-term enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) in patients with advanced late-onset Pompe disease (LOPD).

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the efficacy and limitations of ERT in advanced LOPD patients.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical courses of patients with advanced LOPD (two juvenile-onset and five adult-onset patients) who were treated with recombinant human alglucosidase alfa to examine improvements achieved with and limitations of ERT until their death or when switching to avalglucosidase alfa occurred.

Superiority of high sensitivity cardiac troponin I over NT-proBNP and adiponectin for 7-year mortality in stable patients receiving haemodialysis.

Patients on haemodialysis (HD) have high mortality risk, and prognostic values of the major cardiovascular biomarkers cardiac troponin I (cTnI), N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), and adiponectin should be ascertained over longer follow-up periods using higher-sensitivity assays, which we undertook. In 221 HD patients, levels of high-sensitivity (hs)-cTnI, NT-proBNP, and adiponectin, were measured using high-sensitivity assays, and their associations with all-cause mortality (ACM) and cardiovascular mortality (CVM) were prospectively investigated for 7 years. Higher hs-cTnI and NT-proBNP levels were significant risk factors for ACM and CVM in the Kaplan-Meier analysis.

Comparison of 3D Magnetization-transfer- and Spectral-presaturation-with-inversion-recovery-based Neuromelanin Imaging.

Purpose: Neuromelanin is visualized by optimizing the conditions of longitudinal relaxation (T1)-weighted imaging (T1WI). Although it was originally developed in 2D imaging, 3D imaging has been also reported, and T1WI sequences with magnetization transfer (MT) pulses are now widely used in 3D gradient echo (GRE) sequences. In this study, we assert that the use of spectral presaturation with inversion recovery (SPIR) may also be useful as an alternative to MT pulses, and we optimize SPIR and compare it with MT.

Multiethnic Trends in Early Onset Colorectal Cancer.

Current characteristics of early onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) in the United States have been mainly studied in Whites, African Americans, and Hispanics, but little is known in regard to EOCRC in Asians and Native Hawaiians in the US. EOCRC was examined in Hawaii's multiethnic population. Data from the Hawaii Tumor Registry was used to analyze colorectal cancer (CRC) cases diagnosed in Hawaii from 2000-2019 by subsite, age, gender, ethnicity, and stage.

Atypical granular cell tumour in a child: A rare case report.

We report an atypical granular cell tumour (GCT) presenting in a 6-year-old boy. GCTs are of neural origin and most cases arise in patients between the ages of 40 and 60. There are few reported cases in children, in whom malignant presentations are exceptionally rare.

Humoral response after BNT162b2 vaccine in Japanese hemodialysis patients.

Background: Hemodialysis patients are more likely to be severely affected if infected by COVID-19. Contributing factors include chronic kidney disease, old age, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cerebrovascular disease. Therefore, action against COVID-19 for hemodialysis patients is an urgent issue.

A retrospective analysis of speech and hearing in patients receiving surgery for submucous cleft palate.

Submucous cleft palate (SMCP) is an uncommon subtype of cleft palate that is associated with symptoms of velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI), the most common being hypernasal speech. A high proportion of patients also suffer from conductive hearing loss, which is thought to be due to eustachian tube dysfunction. A number of surgical techniques have been proposed to correct the anatomical defect that is responsible for VPI.

Differences in flaA gene sequences, swimming motility, and biofilm forming ability between clinical and environmental isolates of Aeromonas species.

The flagellin A gene (flaA) sequences, swimming motility, and biofilm forming ability were investigated in order to reveal the genetic and functional differences of flagella between clinical and environmental isolates of Aeromonas species. Twenty-eight clinical and 48 environmental strains of Aeromonas species isolated in Okinawa Prefecture of Japan were used in this study. The full-length flaA genes of these strains were sequenced and aligned, and a phylogenetic tree was constructed.

The impact of COVID-19 on cleft services in Great Britain & Northern Ireland.

Introduction: Cleft lip and/or palate is the most common craniofacial anomaly and occurs in 1 in 650 to 700 live births in the United Kingdom (UK). The majority of cleft surgery is elective, and as a result, almost all cleft surgery was suspended across the UK in March 2020 during the first national lockdown. The UK has centralised regional Cleft Services which all use the same agreed target-age standards for primary surgery including lip and palate repairs.

Construction of Functional Materials in Various Material Forms from Cellulosic Cholesteric Liquid Crystals.

Wide use of bio-based polymers could play a key role in facilitating a more sustainable society because such polymers are renewable and ecofriendly. Cellulose is a representative bio-based polymer and has been used in various materials. To further expand the application of cellulose, it is crucial to develop functional materials utilizing cellulosic physicochemical properties that are acknowledged but insufficiently applied.

Critical respiratory failure in pregnancy complicated with COVID-19: A case report.

The case is presented of a 29-year-old primiparous woman who was COVID-19-positive at 34 weeks of gestation and who developed severe acute respiratory distress syndrome. After a four-day history of fever and mild dyspnea, she was referred to hospital. Ciclesonide, dexamethasone, heparin sodium, and sulbactam/ampicillin were initiated, followed by remdesivir and tocilizumab.

Case Report: Ischemic Enterocolitis Associated with Coronavirus Disease 2019: Two Case Reports and a Review of the Literature.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused serious health and social concerns worldwide. Although the primary target of SARS-CoV-2 is the respiratory tract, SARS-CoV-2 infection also causes extrapulmonary symptoms. Previous articles have reported ischemic colitis in COVID-19 patients; however, information regarding its clinical manifestations and pathophysiology is limited.

A long-term survivor keeping in a complete response without treatment after pemetrexed maintenance therapy for advanced non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer.

Pemetrexed has significant efficacy for some non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer cases, as demonstrated in the current case. For those patients, pemetrexed administration should be carefully considered.

Comparison of species, virulence genes and clones of Aeromonas isolates from clinical specimens and well water in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan.

Aims: To reveal the sources of Aeromonas infection in Okinawa Prefecture of Japan, the species, virulence genes and clones of strains isolated from clinical specimens and well water were compared.

Methods And Results: The properties of both isolates were investigated by sequencing of rpoD, detection of 10 virulence genes using PCR and genotyping with pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. In all, 68 clinical and 146 well water strains of Aeromonas were isolated and the main species were A.

Case Report: Iliopsoas Hematoma during the Clinical Course of Severe COVID-19 in Two Male Patients.

Anticoagulation plays a major role in reducing the risk of systematic thrombosis in patients with severe COVID-19. Serious hemorrhagic complications, such as intracranial hemorrhage, have also been recognized. However, intra-abdominal hemorrhage is under-recognized because of its rare occurrence, despite high mortality.
