Objective: Lower extremity computed tomography angiography (CTA) is frequently used for anatomic assessment of lower extremity peripheral arterial disease. When lower extremity bypass is planned, duplex ultrasound (DUS) is routinely obtained to evaluate the great saphenous vein (GSV) for use as conduit. Although GSV can be visualized on CTA images, diameter assessment is not routinely included in formal study interpretation.

New δ(15)N and δ(13)C values were obtained from 15 taxa under Hygrophoraceae collected in central Massachusetts and combined with isotopic datasets from five prior studies including a further 12 species using a data standardization method to allow cross-site comparison. Based on these data, we inferred the probable nutritional modes for species of Hygrophorus, Hygrocybe, Humidicutis, Cuphophyllus and Gliophorus.

Preliminary analyses on adrenocortical morphology have revealed an age-associated reduction in the thickness of the zona reticularis (ZR), the cortical zone responsible for the majority of DHEA/DHEA sulfate production in the adult human, but no change in the overall thickness of the adrenal cortex. The ZR width could decrease in aging due to loss of ZR cells and/or to shrinkage of ZR cells.

Methods: Two patients with mucolipidosis IV were examined clinically and their condition was followed up for ophthalmic manifestations of the disease. Electroretinograms were performed on both patients, and conjunctival biopsy specimens were analyzed for characteristic ultrastructural inclusion bodies using light and electron microscopy.
Whereas aging has been shown to be associated with striking reductions in circulating levels of adrenal androgens in humans, the alteration in adrenal function that occurs in aging has not been identified. We sought to determine if there are changes in the zonation of the adrenal in aging men by performing histomorphologic analyses of adrenal specimens that had been obtained at autopsy following sudden death due to trauma. We evaluated adrenals from 21 young men (20-29 yrs) and 12 older men (54-90 yrs); inclusion criteria required the presence of medullary tissue in the specimen and fixation within the first 24 hrs postmortem.

Purpose: Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and its receptors could contribute to the development of proliferative retinal membranes, because PDGF is angiogenic and is both mitogenic and chemotactic for retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) and glial cells, components of membranes. The authors sought to determine whether PDGF ligands and their receptors were present in proliferative retinal membranes.
Methods: To localize PDGF ligands and receptors, the authors examined normal postmortem control retinas, intact eyes with proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) or proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), and membranes removed by vitrectomy from patients with PVR, epimacular proliferation, PDR, or PVR with PDR of previous onset.
Purpose: Integrins are cell surface proteins that participate in interactions between cells and with extracellular matrix. Binding of integrins to their ligands influences cell activities including proliferation, migration, and differentiation. Expression of integrin subunits from three different subfamilies were examined in human retina.

Subcellular organelles sedimenting in the centrifuged pellets could be identified as to cell of origin, health of the parent cell, and time since cell rupture. Acellular specimens were typical of angiomatous detachments or long-standing rhegmatogenous detachments.
