Gastric mucosal blood flow and gastric mucosal prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and prostacyclin (PGI2) were investigated in male Wistar rats intraarterially injected with endothelin (ET), an endothelium-derived vasoconstrictor peptide. Immediately following ET (4 nmol/kg) administration, gastric mucosal blood flow decreased. Then 30 min later, the blood flow reached the minimum, but PGE2 and PGI2 showed the highest value.

Nine advanced gastric cancer patients were given 17 courses of cisplatin administrations by means of a 24-hour intravenous infusion at a dose of 100 mg/m2. For an anti-emetic, 40 mg of metoclopramide was administered 5 times at 6-hour intervals, along with a 500 mg hydrocortisone administration at the start of the cisplatin infusion. Despite this preventative treatment, nausea and/or vomiting occurred in over one-third of all the courses.

A cell line, ATDC5, isolated from a differentiating culture of AT805 teratocarcinoma expressed a fibroblastic cell phenotype in a growing phase. With the addition of 10 micrograms/ml insulin to the medium, cells continued to grow even in a postconfluent phase, formed cartilage nodule-like cell aggregates, were stained with Alcian blue and produced cartilage-specific proteoglycan and type II collagen, typical marker molecules for chondrogenesis. Since ATDC5 cells also differentiated into unidentifiable pigmented cells, they are apparently composed of undetermined cells.

We treated a patient with chronic granulocytic leukemia (CGL), in the accelerated phase by intensive chemotherapy followed by the infusion of cryopreserved peripheral blood buffy-coat cells. The cells had been stored for 32 months. The chemotherapy consisted of daunorubicin 40 mg X 2 days, vincristine 2 mg X 1 day, cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C) 200 mg X 6 days and prednisolone 30 mg X 7 days in the first week, then Ara-C 3 g/m2 X 3 days and cyclophosphamide 60 mg/kg X 2 days in the second week, but reversion to the chronic phase was not achieved.

Expression of the Bacillus subtilis gluconate (gnt) operon is negatively regulated by the gnt repressor which is antagonized by D-gluconate or D-glucono-delta-lactone. The repressor specifically binds to a gnt operator near the gnt promoter. From the results of gel retardation assaying of the gnt repressor and various restriction enzyme digests of a fragment carrying the gnt promoter and the gntR gene, the gnt operator was found to be located within a 141-base pair region containing the gnt promoter.

Thirty-two cases of congenital arachnoid cyst (AC), 26 cases of supratentorial, and 6 cases of infratentorial cyst are reported. They were encountered over a period of 9 years. The 26 supratentorial cysts consisted of 21 cases located in the middle fossa, 2 in the frontal, and 3 in the suprasellar.

Brachytherapy with cobalt-60 source is reported. In this method it is characterized that the source is inserted interstitially with remote control system by after-loading method via outer catheter (using tandem tube), which was established in the center of residual tumor, using ultrasonography guide with trepanation, or intraoperatively put within the dead space after tumor resection. Six cases of deep-seated and recurrent malignant glioma, were treated with this method.

The GntR protein is a negative regulator involved in gluconate-inducible expression of the Bacillus subtilis gnt operon which is responsible for gluconate metabolism. The GntR protein has been purified to homogeneity from an overproducing Escherichia coli strain harboring a gntR gene-carrying plasmid. The total amino acid composition and the NH2-terminal amino acid sequence of the purified protein were essentially the same as those deduced from the nucleotide sequence of the gntR gene.

A total of 6346 swine sera collected at an abattoir in the city of Obihiro, Hokkaido during the years 1978-87 were tested for the presence of antibodies to swine and human influenza viruses. A high incidence of antibody to A/New Jersey/8/76 (swine type H1N1) virus was observed throughout the 10 years except for the occasional month and a single long period of 15 months. Antibodies to human H3N2 virus in swine appeared to be related to the epidemics of human influenza which occurred in the study area during the years 1980-3, but unrelated to the epidemics during the years 1984-7.

A sensitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used in a retrospective study of placental alkaline phosphatase (PLAP) levels in serum, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and intratumoral cyst fluid in primary intracranial germinoma. The ELISA showed no cross-reactivity with intestinal alkaline phosphatase except in very high concentrations, after samples had been heat-treated. Three patients with germinoma were studied for serum PLAP levels and in all the levels were elevated (3.

We examined the response of 8 patients with nephrotic syndrome (creatinine clearance 70.4 +/- 16.0 ml/min) to oral furosemide (F; 40 mg) in the absence (control) and in the presence of oral hydrochlorothiazide (HCT; 100 mg).
