The introduction of oligodimethyl siloxane segments at the termini of the alkyl tails has been employed to stabilize the bicontinuous cubic (Cub(bi)) phase of a chain-core-chain type molecule having a 1,2-bis(benzoyl)hydrazine central core with two chains attached at the 4' position of each benzoyl moiety. In this study, three silylated molecules, bis-C10Si2, bis-C10Si3, and C10Si2-C8C=C, were synthesized, where "CnSim" represents the number of carbon and silicon atoms in the chain and "bis" indicates the two chains being the same, whereas the last one is asymmetric with respect to the core. The phase behaviors were examined by using polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction techniques.

Poor transdermal penetration of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) impairs both bioavailability and therapeutic benefits and is a major challenge in the development of transdermal drug delivery systems. Here, we transformed a poorly water-soluble drug, etodolac, into an ionic liquid in order to improve its hydrophobicity, hydrophilicity and skin permeability. The ionic liquid was prepared by mixing etodolac with lidocaine (1:1, mol/mol).

The variety of scalar and vector fields in laboratory and nature plasmas is formed by plasma turbulence. Drift-wave fluctuations, driven by density gradients in magnetized plasmas, are known to relax the density gradient while they can generate flows. On the other hand, the sheared flow in the direction of magnetic fields causes Kelvin-Helmholtz type instabilities, which mix particle and momentum.

In this study, we generated transgenic (Tg) mice, which overexpressed transforming growth factor (TGF)-β stimulated clone-22 (TSC-22), and investigate the functional role of TSC-22 on their development and pathogenesis. We obtained 13 Tg-founders (two mice from C57BL6/J and 11 mice from BDF1). Three of 13 Tg-founders were sterile, and the remaining Tg-founders also could generate only a limited number of the F1 generation.

Assuming the twisted arrangement of rodlike molecules as the origin of the chirality as in the existing model, a new model of the molecular arrangement in the cubic "Im3m" phase is proposed. The adoption of a basic structure different from that assumed in the existing model resolves most difficulties of the model including the random placement of defects concerning the sense of twist.

Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) occurs under various circumstances, including during embryonic/developmental periods, pathological status secondary to insufficient bone marrow function or ineffective hematopoiesis, in hematological disorders, for example malignancies, as well as stromal disorders of the bone. EMH is characterized by hematopoietic cell accumulations in multiple body locations. Common EMH locations observed in clinical and pathological practice include the spleen, liver, lymph nodes and para‑vertebral regions.

Background: Human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) are being applied in regenerative medicine and for the in vitro modeling of human intractable disorders. In particular, neural cells derived from disease-specific human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) established from patients with neurological disorders have been used as in vitro disease models to recapitulate in vivo pathogenesis because neural cells cannot be usually obtained from patients themselves.

Results: In this study, we established a rapid, efficient, and simple method for efficiently deriving motor neurons from hPSCs that is useful for pathophysiological analysis and the development of drugs to treat motor neuron diseases.

Small mammal surgical procedures are a part of clinical veterinary practice and are performed with regularity. Anesthetic and analgesic techniques are important components of any successful small mammal surgical procedure. Many basic surgical principles used in dogs and cats can be directly applied to small mammals, but tissues tend to be smaller and thinner, and hemostasis is critical with small patients due to risk of death with minimal blood loss.

The reduction of brain amyloid beta (Aβ) peptides by anti-Aβ antibodies is one of the possible therapies for Alzheimer's disease. We previously reported that the Aβ peptide vaccine including the T-cell epitope of diphtheria-tetanus combined toxoid (DT) induced anti-Aβ antibodies, and the prior immunization with conventional DT vaccine enhanced the immunogenicity of the peptide. Cynomolgus monkeys were given the peptide vaccine subcutaneously in combination with the prior DT vaccination.

A series of 5-N-arylaminothiazoles was prepared by reacting thioamide dianions derived from secondary thioamides with thioformamides, followed by sequential oxidation with iodine. X-ray analyses demonstrated that they adopt structures that are highly twisted from planar conformations. Their orientations were tuned by the steric and/or electronic interactions of the substituents at their 2-, 4-, and 5-positions.

Objective: Sex-specific medicine has attracted attention in recent years, but no report on rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has examined sex differences in the effectiveness of biologics on activities of daily living (ADL), quality of life (QOL), or depressive state.

Methods: The study subjects were 161 RA patients (female: 138; male: 23) attending regular doctor visits at our hospital. We compared the changes in disease activity, which was evaluated using the simplified disease activity index (SDAI), ADL (using the modified health assessment questionnaire; mHAQ), QOL (using short form-36; SF-36), and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) for RA patients between each sex over a six-month observation period while administering biologic treatment.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) usually form a well-circumscribed mass. Very rarely, however, sporadic GISTs show gut-wall replacing growth, similar to the diffuse hyperplasia of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) observed in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and hereditary GIST. Here we describe a patient with ileal perforation caused by this unusual type of GIST.

Postsurgical tissue adhesion formation caused by inflammation and oxidative stress is one of the serious issues because it induces severe clinical disorders. In this study, we designed redox injectable gel (RIG) which covalently possesses nitroxide radicals as a reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenger for high performance anti-adhesion agent. The redox flower micelles exhibiting gelation under physiological conditions were prepared by a polyion complex (PIC) between polyamine-PEG-polyamine triblock copolymer possessing nitroxide radicals as a side chain of polyamine segments and poly(acrylic acid).

Changes in intermolecular interactions and molecular geometry for two kinds of thermotropic cubic mesogenes, 4'-n-alkoxy-3'-nitrobiphenyl-4-carboxlic acid (denoted as ANBC-n, where n represents the number of carbon atoms in the alkoxy group) and 1,2-bis(4'-n-alkoxybenzoyl)hydrazines (BABH-n), at liquid crystal (LC) phase transitions were revealed utilizing the frequency shifts in Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) bands as a guide. The ANBC-n and BABH-n form two kinds of bicontinuous cubic (Cub(bi)), Ia3d and Im3m types, and smectic LC phases depending on the length of the alkyl chain and temperature. In the present work, two kinds of phase transitions, i.
