Article Synopsis
  • Hereditary angioedema (HAE) significantly impacts patients' quality of life, and understanding the disease burden is crucial for effective treatment.
  • In 2021, patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) showed that higher attack frequencies correlated with increased health-related quality of life (HRQoL) impairment.
  • The study highlighted that patients experiencing more frequent HAE attacks had notable difficulties in work productivity, experiencing both absenteeism and presenteeism.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compares severe complications in pediatric cardiac catheterization for ventricular septal defects between general anesthesia and sedation in patients under 2 years old.
  • The analysis included 3,159 patients from 87 hospitals, revealing that general anesthesia was associated with a higher rate of severe complications (2.4%) compared to sedation (0.6%).
  • The findings suggest that sedation may be safer than general anesthesia for this procedure, indicating a need for more research into optimal anesthetic methods for pediatric patients.

Objectives: Clinical evidence on prophylactic antibiotics for transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) to prevent liver abscess is limited because liver abscess is a rare event. This study aimed to analyse the association between prophylactic antibiotic use for TACE and the occurrence of liver abscess after TACE.

Methods: Using the nationwide Diagnosis Procedure Combination database in Japan, we retrospectively identified patients who underwent TACE for hepatic cancer between July 2010 and March 2017.

Purpose: Periprosthetic joint infection is a serious complication of total knee arthroplasty. Though there are many factors that might increase its risk, the use of propofol for maintaining general anesthesia could theoretically increase the incidence of infection because of its lipid component that supports bacterial growth. Nevertheless, the relationship between anesthetic maintenance agents and the occurrence of periprosthetic joint infection remains uncertain.

Purpose: Sivelestat is widely used in Japan for the treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome caused by pneumonia. Although the efficacy of sivelestat was reported in several Japanese studies in the early 2000 s, a multinational randomized control trial did not support these findings. We therefore conducted the present study to examine the association between the use of sivelestat and mortality in pneumonia patients requiring mechanical ventilation.
