Induction of new bone by basic FGF-loaded porous carbonate apatite implants in femur defects in rats.

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to investigate whether porous carbonate apatite (CA) containing basic FGF (bFGF) enhances bone augmentation as compared with porous CA alone.

Material And Methods: Thirty-six disc-shaped porous CA implants were inserted into femur defects in 36 Wister rats. Porous CA containing 0, 5, or 50 ng of bFGF was placed in the defect.

Chronic hematic cyst of the temporomandibular joint.

Hematic cyst refers to accumulation of blood or blood breakdown products in a non epithelium-lined fibrous tissue capsule. Hepatic cyst is a term often used for deeply placed, incompletely resorbed hematoma hemorrhagic cyst, which may remain unchanged and unidentified for long periods of time. Trauma is the major causative factor, although it is often vague or totally uncalled by the patient.

Senile delirium with special reference to situational factors and recurrent delirium.

Factors initiating senile delirium were examined in 129 elderly inpatients (65 years or older). Sixty-eight patients were males and 61 females, with a mean age of 76.3 years.

Two autopsy cases of Pick's disease with neurofibrillary tangles.

Two cases of presenile dementia were presented. Both showed "stehende Redensarten" and aphasia. Histopathologically, besides Pick features--temporal lobe atrophy, fibrillary gliosis of the temporal white matter and neuronal loss in the 2--3 cortical layers--, Alzheimer features--neurofibrillary tangles and granulo-vacuolar degeneration--were found in both cases.

Cerebrospinal fluid monoamine metabolites and cyclic nucleotides in chronic schizophrenic patients with tardive dyskinesia or drug-induced tremor.

Lumbar CSF HVA, MHPG, 5HIAA, cAMP, and cGMP were measured in 12 chronic schizophrenics with tardive dyskinesia before and 3 weeks after sodium valproate (VPA) or cyproheptadine treatment. HVA levels significantly decreased and cAMP and cGMP levels significantly increased during the administration of VPA or cyproheptadine. There were no significant correlations between the degree of improvement in tardive dyskinesia and the changes of amine metabolities or cyclic nucleotides.

Correlation between the kindled seizure susceptibility and brain monoamine levels was investigated in the hippocampal and amygdaloid kindled cats. Increase of interictal discharge (IID) frequency and morphological change of IID into self-sustained discharge appeared following reserpine administration. alpha-MPT also increased the IID frequency.

Partial purification of a morphological transforming factor from pig brain.

A protein that changes one type of embryonic rat brain cell in culture from a primitive morphology to one resembling mature glial cell has been purified 400-fold from pig brain. The procedure includes differential centrifugation, ethanol treatment, trypsin digestion and column chromatography with Sephadex G-200 and Sepharose 4B. Although not completely homogeneous, the protein is biologically active at a concentration of 1-10(-8) M.

Effects of various cerebral metabolic activators on glucose metabolism of brain.

The effects of various metabolic activators on the glucose metabolism of the perfused cat brain have been investigated. (1) When the perfusion is done with the blood containing cytidine monophosphate, the glucose metabolism of the brain is enhanced, as compared to the perfusion with the blood without cytidine monophosphate. There is no marked change in the cerebral metabolic rate and in the contents of intermediate metabolite of glucose in the brain.

Brain cells in culture: morphological transformation by a protein.

One type of elmbryonic rat brain cell having an epithelioid morphology in the monolayer culture can be transformed by brain extract into cells having extensive processes resembling mature astrocytes. The transforming factor is a protein with a molecular weight of 350,000. A partially purified sample showed that it is active at a concentration as low as 1 x 10(-8)M.
