The magnetic susceptibility, high field magnetization, and specific heat measurements of Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2, which is a model substance for the frustrating diamond spin chain model, have been performed using single crystals. Two broad peaks are observed at around 20 and 5 K in both magnetic susceptibility and specific heat results. The magnetization curve has a clear plateau at one third of the saturation magnetization.

Hepatoblastoma, a childhood tumor of the liver, is composed of epithelial and mesenchymal elements in varying proportions and at various stages of differentiation. The epithelial element recapitulates the stages of hepatocyte development from the primitive blastema through embryonal hepatocytes to fetal hepatocytes. The blastemal or undifferentiated cells have been postulated to represent neoplastic hepatocyte progenitor cells.

Lipoblastoma is a rare benign tumor of the soft tissue occurring predominantly during the first two years of life. We report here the application of MRI and ultrasound to the detection of a soft tissue lipoblastoma. By MRI and ultrasound, we precisely evaluated the extent of the tumor, the presence of atypical areas of cystic and mucoid degeneration within the tumor, and its lack of vascularity.

Antibodies raised against prostatic specific antigen (PSA) and immunoglobulin binding factor (IgBF) of human seminal plasma (SP) were used to localize the antigens in various tissues by Western blot. Both antigens were found only in the prostate, including benign prostatic hypertrophy and prostatic adenocarcinoma. The polyclonal anti-PSA antibodies stained five prostatic protein bands with estimated M(r) values of 10, 14, 22, 25, and 33 kD, whereas anti-IgBF antibodies stained a single 16-kD protein.

To determine the source of the immunoglobulin binding factor (IBF) in seminal plasma, extracts of testis and accessory male sex organs were prepared and analyzed by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and immunoblot. The detection reagents used were human and mouse serum Ig, monoclonal anti-Leu 11b antibodies, and polyclonal rabbit anti-IBF antibodies. Of the tissues examined, only the prostate, including benign hypertrophy and adenocarcinoma, contained IBF.

Pathology of intestinal ischemia.

Surg Clin North Am

February 1992

Intestinal ischemia produces a spectrum of gross and microscopic pathologic changes that range from transmural necrosis to reversible mucosal injury. Depending on the stage at which tissue is examined, findings may reflect the acute injury or reparative changes. This article reviews the diagnosis of the pathologic findings in differential intestinal ischemia.

Human seminal plasma, testis, seminal vesicle, epididymis, and prostate contain a component with an estimated Mr of 20 kD that binds human immunoglobulin-Fc. The factor did not bind goat-IgG-Fc, immunoglobulins of human, rat, mouse, goat, horse, or rabbit sera and did not interact with antibodies raised against Fc gamma receptors. The present findings show that this Fc binding factor in seminal plasma is a secretory product of the testis and accessory sex organs.

Colonic ischemia (CI) is a rare complication of high-dose interleukin-2 (IL-2) immunotherapy. This complication occurred in three of 141 patients (2.1%) with metastatic cancer treated with high-dose IL-2 therapy; CI only developed in patients receiving interferon-alpha (IFN) with IL-2 (three of 21, 14%) compared with none of 120 in those patients receiving IL-2 alone (P equals 0.

The role of lymphocytes in the pathogenesis of amiodarone-induced lung disease is controversial. Increases in the percentages of lymphocytes in bronchoalveolar fluid of both patients and animals with amiodarone pulmonary toxicity have been reported. To assess whether these lymphocytes are functionally activated, we measured natural killer cell activity in the lungs and blood of rats with amiodarone-induced pulmonary toxicity.

This article describes the first posterior septal and first and second right free-wall pathways identified at operation for Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome and confirmed histologically. All pathways were found in the areas of preexcitation identified by pre and intraoperative mapping. They bridged the atrium and ventricle, and postoperative electrophysiological testing confirmed division of the pathways.

The neuropathologic findings of brains and spinal cords removed at autopsy from 26 infants and children with AIDS is described; in two cases, only the spinal cords were available. The most common finding in the brains was dystrophic calcification of blood vessels of all calibers in the basal ganglia and deep cerebral white matter (21 og 24 cases). The next most frequent finding was subacute encephalitis (SE) (15 of 24 cases) with microglial nodules and multinulceated giant cells.

Previous studies have not clearly defined the role of cell-mediated immunity in bleomycin-induced lung injury. In this report the functional activity of T lymphocytes obtained from minced lung preparations, bronchoalveolar lavage, and blood of rabbits treated with bleomycin was examined in cell proliferation and cell-mediated cytotoxicity assays. Four days after instillation of bleomycin (10 units/kg) into the right lung, histologic examination revealed mononuclear cell interstitial infiltrates and alveolar exudates.

Nasopharyngeal teratoma in the neonate.

Int J Pediatr Otorhinolaryngol

December 1987

Nasopharyngeal teratomas are rare neoplasms, often presenting as neonatal airway obstruction. A case is presented of a full-term neonate with a mass which filled the oropharynx, nasopharynx and the entire left nasal cavity and extended through the left nares. Airway obstruction necessitated orotracheal intubation immediately after delivery.

Ischemia of the donor bronchus, perfused solely by retrograde collaterals from the pulmonary circulation, is an important factor in the impaired healing of the bronchial anastomosis of transplanted lungs. The healing of two experimental models of bronchial anastomotic ischemia, the bronchial segmental autograft and the postpneumonectomy bronchial autograft, was assessed in dogs. The application of a polytetrafluoroethylene wrap to the bronchial segmental autograft and the application of an intercostal pedicle flap to the postpneumonectomy bronchial autograft, with and without concomitant administration of corticosteroids, were also studied to elucidate factors that affect bronchial anastomotic healing.
