Background: Children with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) are highly susceptible to malnutrition, which may restrict surgery eligibility and delay repair. Preoperative nutrition programs for children with unrepaired CL/P are an effective treatment to overcome malnutrition for safe surgical intervention in high-resource settings; however, the effectiveness of such programs has not been demonstrated in the setting of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We studied the impact of a preoperative nutrition program on improving nutritional status and achieving surgical eligibility for children with CL/P.

While Hepatitis A Virus (HAV) vaccination in global immunization programs has shown a virtual elimination of the disease within few years of the vaccination program, changing epidemiological landscape in India underscores the need for evidence-based, updated guidance on immunization practices. In May 2024, a panel of 15 distinguished opinion leaders and an organizing committee convened for an intensive, face-to-face advisory board meeting on high burden of HAV infection among adults, increased mortality rate in adolescents, symptomatic presentation in children, and evolving landscape globally and within India. Extensive comparable deliberations on long-term follow-up data from India and data from country of origin advocated immunogenicity, tolerability, and long-term protective effects of single-dose live attenuated HAV vaccine in children.

Context: Over 40% of pregnancies in the United States are unintended. Women with unintended pregnancies may be less likely to receive timely prenatal care and engage in healthy behaviors immediately before and during pregnancy. Limited research suggests that women with disabilities are more likely to have an unintended pregnancy, but to date no studies have assessed whether intendedness varies by extent of disability.

Many of the cells in mammalian tissues are in a reversible quiescent state; they are not dividing, but retain the ability to proliferate in response to extracellular signals. Quiescence relies on the activities of transcription factors (TFs) that orchestrate the repression of genes that promote proliferation and establish a quiescence-specific gene expression program. Here we discuss how the coordinated activities of TFs in different quiescent stem cells and differentiated cells maintain reversible cell cycle arrest and establish cell-protective signalling pathways.

Article Synopsis
  • Forskolin, derived from the roots of Coleus forskohlii, has therapeutic potential and this study aimed to develop a reliable method for regenerating these plants year-round for consistent forskolin production.
  • The researchers found that using 1.5 mg/L meta-topolin increased shoot and leaf output significantly, with optimal results achieved through a combination with auxin.
  • Results showed high plant survival rates during acclimatization, confirmed genetic fidelity with the mother plant, and a notable increase in forskolin levels in the in vitro roots, suggesting this method could support commercial production and conservation efforts.

Wood of broad-leaf tree species is a valued source of renewable biomass for biorefinery and a target for genetic improvement efforts to reduce its recalcitrance. Glucuronoxylan (GX) plays a key role in recalcitrance through its interactions with cellulose and lignin. To reduce recalcitrance, we modified wood GX by expressing GH10 and GH11 endoxylanases from Aspergillus nidulans in hybrid aspen (Populus tremula L.

Intuition suggests that passage times across a region increase with the number of barriers along the path. Can this fail depending on the nature of the barrier? To probe this fundamental question, we exactly solve for the first passage time in general -dimensions for diffusive transport through a spatially patterned array of obstacles - either entropic or energetic, depending on the nature of the obstacles. For energetic barriers, we show that first passage times vary non-monotonically with the number of barriers, while for entropic barriers it increases monotonically.
