Candidiasis is an infectious disease caused by some fungi of the genus Candida. In Brazil, the incidence rate is higher than in European countries and the United States, and health problems occur mainly due to the virulence factors of the fungi, which have made treatment with commercial drugs difficult. Considering the context, plants rich in phenolic compounds, such as those of the genus Piper, have been studied due to their antimicrobial properties.

Pneumocephalus refers to the presence of air within the intracranial cavity, and albeit its occurrence following neuraxial techniques is rare, it is commonly associated with a loss of resistance to air technique. This case report describes a parturient who underwent neuraxial analgesia for pain management during labour. Epidural space identification with loss of resistance to saline technique was used and she went on to develop a symptomatic pneumocephalus.

Atrazine is an herbicide widely used on plantations worldwide. Experimental studies suggest that the herbicide impairs male reproductive function in mammals. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the impact of atrazine exposure on the levels of hormones from the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis using murine as the animal model.

Background: Intravitreal injections, a relatively recent treatment in ophthalmology, is being adopted rapidly worldwide and becoming one of the most common therapies in the field. Numerous complications are associated with this treatment, ranging from minor inflammatory ailments to endophthalmitis. We analyzed the conjunctival flora of patients treated with intravitreal injections and topical antibiotics.

Methods: MEDLINE/PubMed and EMBASE databases were inquired from inception until September 1st, 2023, to address the following a-priori-formulated questions: i) "Which psychiatric population has been assessed? How did the conflict affect the functioning of people with established mental health conditions (e.g.
Regrettably, glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) remains the deadliest form of brain cancer, where the early diagnosis plays a pivotal role in the patient's therapy and prognosis. Hence, we report for the first time the design, synthesis, and characterization of new hybrid organic-inorganic stimuli-responsive nanoplexes (NPX) for bioimaging and killing brain cancer cells (GBM, U-87). These nanoplexes were built through coupling two nanoconjugates, produced using a facile, sustainable, green aqueous colloidal process ("bottom-up").

Objective: This study aimed to examine the discriminative capacity of Dimensional Clinical Personality Inventory 2 (IDCP-2) factors in identifying individuals with elevated Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) traits within a Brazilian community sample while proposing an optimal cutoff score for distinguishing high BPD trait levels.
Methods: The participant cohort consisted of 1,469 adults who completed assessments, including the Level of Personality Functioning Scale - Brief Form 2.0 (LPFS), Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5), IDCP-2, and Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-IV - Personality Questionnaire (PQ-SCID-II).

Background: Pregnant women constitute a vulnerable population occasionally affected by zoonotic sporotrichosis. Treatment is challenging due to potentially teratogenic oral medications (itraconazole and saturated potassium iodide solution) or lack of clinical experience during pregnancy (terbinafine). Literature is scarce on sporotrichosis and pregnancy, mainly consisting of case reports.

Advanced machine learning techniques have significantly accelerated biocatalysis research, revolutionizing the prediction of biocatalytic activities and facilitating the discovery of novel biocatalysts. However, the limited availability of data for specific enzyme functions, such as conversion efficiency and stereoselectivity, presents challenges for prediction accuracy.

Sexual boredom in women is associated with various levels and dimensions of sexual desire, as well as lower sexual and relationship satisfaction. However, the directionality of these relationships remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether sexual boredom mediates the relationship between partner and attractive-other sexual desire and sexual and relationship satisfaction in a sample of 1155 Portuguese women in long-term monogamous relationships.

By using mass-production industrial methods, it is possible to produce large amounts of fungal single-celled propagules (including blastospores) to be applied in the field. However, in the environment, the solar ultraviolet components (particularly UV-B) can harm the fungus, negatively impacting its pathogenicity toward the arthropod pest.

These changes frequently manifest as dysregulation in glucose metabolism and mitochondrial function, leading to reduced energy production, increased oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction-key contributors to age-related neurodegenerative diseases.
Methods: We conducted experiments on two models: young (3-4 months) and aged (over 18 months) mice, as well as cultures of senescent and control mouse astrocytes.

Streptococcus pneumoniae and influenza A virus (IAV) are significant agents of pneumonia cases and severe respiratory infections globally. Secondary bacterial infections, particularly by Streptococcus pneumoniae, are common in IAV-infected individuals, leading to critical outcomes. Despite reducing mortality, pneumococcal vaccines have high production costs and are serotype specific.

Background: The Covid-19 pandemic caused a negative impact on other infectious diseases control, prevention, and treatment. Consequently, low and middle-income countries suffer from other endemic diseases, such as tuberculosis. This study was designed to compare Covid-19 manifestations and outcomes between patients with previously treated tuberculosis and controls without this condition.

Intercostal nerve cryoablation (INC) is a relatively new modality that involves freezing the nerves to prevent pain during recovery. Our hypothesis is that using INC for the Nuss procedure will decrease opioid use, pain scores, and length of stay (LOS) but will increase cost compared with ESP block, thoracic epidural, and PCA.

More recently, the restoration of degraded pastures and the introduction of integrated systems have changed this pattern, and soil C accumulation is often observed. This study evaluated an 11-year field experiment to quantify soil C changes and elucidate C stabilization mechanisms in areas under anthropic uses in the southern Amazon of Brazil.

Dental development is a complex process influenced by genetic and environmental factors. Dental enamel, primarily composed of hydroxyapatite, is formed through complex cellular and biochemical mechanisms. Although this is a stable process, genetic, nutritional, and environmental factores can lead to developmental defects such as hypomineralization and hypoplasia.

After a glide path performed with a size 15 K-file, the instruments (Reciproc R25, Reciproc Blue R25, and WaveOne Gold Primary) were initially used in 936 root canals. Then, for the second and third uses (933 and 927, respectively), a pre-enlargement using a size 25 K-file at the working length was done.

A new parasite of the Class Myxozoa is described in the gallbladder of the ornamental angelfish Pterophyllum scalare, in two municipalities in the state of Amapá, Brazil, based on morphological, morphometric and phylogenetic descriptions. From October 2022 to August 2024 fifty-five angelfish specimens were sampled in Macapá (n=10) and Tartarugalzinho (n=45). Slightly arched mixospores were observed by light microscopy and had characteristics consistent with those of the genus Ceratomyxa.
