The study aimed to analyze trace elements content in baby purees and fruit juices and to evaluate the health risk of young children. The average daily dose, hazard quotient, hazard index and total diet hazard quotient were calculated to assess the potential health risk on per capita and consumers only groups of infants and toddlers. There was no significant health risk for studied groups regarding the intake of trace elements via purees and juices consumption.

This study aimed to optimize and validate the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometric method (ICP OES) for the simultaneous determination of eleven potentially toxic elements (Al, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Fe, Sb, Mn, and Zn) in lipstick samples. The method was evaluated by applying the standard addition method. The recoveries for all elements in lipsticks were between 90% and 110%, except for Cd and Pb they were <90% and >110%, respectively.

Apple peel is frequently exposed to pesticides, especially in the last stages of the pesticide treatment practice. For a certain period, peel retains most of the applied pesticides, which precisely indicates the presence of pesticide residues. Six hydroxycinnamic acids were identified and determined quantitatively in methanol and acetone extracts from quince peel and pulp, namely 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid (3-CQA), 4-p-coumaroylquinic acid (HC1), 4-O-caffeoylquinic acid (4-CQA), 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid (5-CQA), derivative of p-coumaroylquinic acid (HC2) and 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid (3,5-diCQA). The most abundant hydroxycinnamic acid was 5-CQA (neochlorogenic acid) with 259.12-481.

Unravelling (bio)chemical reaction mechanisms and macromolecular folding pathways on the (sub)microsecond time scale is limited by the time resolution of kinetic instruments for mixing reactants and observation of the progress of the reaction. To improve the mixing time resolution, turbulent four- and two-jet tangential micro-mixers were designed and characterized for their mixing and (unwanted) premixing performances employing acid-base reactions monitored by a pH-sensitive fluorescent dye. The mixing performances of the micro-mixers were determined after the mixing chamber in a free-flowing jet.

Background: An inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry method for the speedy simultaneous detection of 19 elements in edible nuts (walnuts: Juglans nigra; almonds: Prunus dulcis; hazelnuts: Corylus avellana; Brazil nuts: Bertholletia excelsa; cashews: Anacardium occidentalle; pistachios: Pistacia vera; and peanuts: Arachis hypogaea) available on the Serbian markets, was optimized and validated through the selection of instrumental parameters and analytical lines free from spectral interference and with the lowest matrix effects.

Results: The analysed macro-elements were present in the following descending order: Na > Mg > Ca > K. Of all the trace elements, the tested samples showed the highest content of Fe.

Solid-phase extraction method followed by direct UV spectrophotometry at 264 nm was developed and applied for the selective ibuprofen determination in two-component formulation of ibuprofen and pseudoephedrine-HCl, combined powder which contains ibuprofen in the form of salt with L-arginine and 10% ibuprofen cream. Procedures for ibuprofen determination in complex pharmaceutical preparations by direct UV spectrophotometry lack selectivity because of interferences of other active substances and fat components. A limited number of spectrophotometric methods applicable to these samples are based on derivative (first and second-order) UV spectroscopy.

Steady-state clouds of microparticles were observed, levitating in a low-frequency glow discharge generated in an elongated vertical glass tube. A heated ring was attached to the tube wall outside, so that the particles, exhibiting a global convective motion, were confined vertically in the region above the location of the heater. It is shown that the particle vortices were induced by the convection of neutral gas, and the mechanism responsible for the gas convection was the thermal creep along the inhomogeneously heated tube walls.

The prevalence of colorectal cancer (CRC) increases significantly with age, with 40% of patients in Europe being older than 74 years of age at the time of initial diagnosis. The individualized management of the older-aged patient with cancer is based on the answers to the following questions: 1) will the patient die of cancer or with cancer; 2) will the patient suffer cancer-related morbidity; and 3) is the patient able to handle the toxicity of treatment? More than chronological age, the following parameters are important when elderly patients are to be treated with antineoplastic agents: general condition, liver function, kidney function and bone marrow status. Frail elderly with malignant disease should not be treated with cytostatic therapy.
