Scorpion venom contains various bioactive peptides, many of which exhibit insecticidal activity. The majority of these peptides have a cystine-stabilized α-helix/β-sheet (CSαβ) motif. In addition to these peptides, scorpion venom also contains those with a cystine-stabilized α-helix/α-helix (CSαα) motif, which are known as κ-KTx peptides.

Scorpion venom contains linear peptides without disulfide bonds in addition to peptides with disulfide bonds. Many such linear peptides have an amphiphilic α-helical structure, often with antimicrobial activity and can be classified into three groups based on their molecular size. Among them, long-chain antimicrobial peptides consisting of more than 40 residues have not been thoroughly studied due to the difficulty of synthesizing them.

Key Clinical Message: Apraxia of speech (AOS) due to a postcentral infarction differs from conventional precentral AOS with respect to phonemic errors (phoneme substitution) which are more common than phonetic errors (phoneme distortion) and preserved accent and intonation.

Abstract: Clinical features of apraxia of speech caused by lesions in the postcentral gyrus have not yet been elucidated. Here, we report a patient with this lesion and show how postcentral apraxia of speech differs from the hitherto known precentral apraxia of speech.

Field-grown peach trees are large and have a complex branch structure; therefore, detection of water deficit stress from images is challenging. We obtained large datasets of images of field-grown peach trees with continuous values of stem water potential (Ψstem) through partial secession treatment of the base of branches to change the water status of the branches. The total number of images as frames extracted from videos of branches was 23,181, 6743, and 10,752, in the training, validation, and test datasets, respectively.

This study aimed to identify the neuroanatomical predictors of oropharyngeal dysphagia and tube dependency in patients with supratentorial or infratentorial ischemic strokes. Patients with acute ischemic stroke were enrolled and were classified into 3 groups: right supratentorial (n = 61), left supratentorial (n = 89), and infratentorial stroke (n = 50). Dysphagia was evaluated by a modified water swallowing test and the Food Intake LEVEL Scale to evaluate oropharyngeal dysphagia and tube dependency, respectively.

Background: There are few reports on the relationship between facial expression formation and mass of the muscle responsible for facial expression. We analyzed the facial expression using facial action coding system (FACS) and examined the muscle mass and characteristics of the facial expression muscles using multi-detector row computed tomography (MDCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Moreover, the relation between these was statistically evaluated.

The potential of genomic selection (GS) is currently being evaluated for fruit breeding. GS models are usually constructed based on information from both the genotype and phenotype of population. However, information from phenotyped but non-genotyped relatives can also be used to construct GS models, and this additional information can improve their accuracy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the potential of aronia berry extract, rich in anthocyanins, to reduce inflammation in vascular endothelial cells, which is important for preventing atherosclerosis.
  • Aronia berry extract was found to significantly suppress the expression of inflammatory cytokines and reduce monocyte adhesion to endothelial cells when pre-treated before exposure to TNF-α.
  • The extract appeared to exert its effects by inhibiting specific signaling pathways, including the phosphorylation of STAT3, while not affecting NF-κB translocation, suggesting a targeted mechanism in managing vascular inflammation.

In the breeding of citrus (Citrus spp.), suitable fruit quality is essential for consumer acceptance of new cultivars. To identify parental combinations producing F1 progeny with fruit-quality traits exceeding certain selection criteria, we developed a simple and practical method for predicting multiple-trait segregation in an F1 progeny population.

Cyclic dynamics of populations are outstanding and widespread phenomena across many taxa. Previous theoretical studies have mainly focused on the consumer-resource interaction as the driving force for such cycling. However, natural ecosystems comprise diverse types of species interactions, but their roles in population dynamics remains unclear.

Transposable elements (TEs) are key elements that facilitate genome evolution of the host organism. A number of studies have assessed the functions of TEs, which change gene expression in the host genome. Activation of TEs is controlled by epigenetic modifications such as DNA methylation and histone modifications.

Idiopathic pneumonia syndrome (IPS), defined as widespread alveolar injury, is a severe complication of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and a clinical syndrome with variable histopathologic correlates and multiple etiologies. Transplantation-associated thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) is another severe complication of HSCT. TMA occurs when endothelial injury causes thrombosis and fibrin deposition in the organ microcirculation.

Full circle: New cyclic tris(spiroborate)s were prepared as molecular recognition modules for nanometer-sized cationic guests. These cyclophanes were simply prepared by treating corresponding bis(2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene)s with an equimolar amount of boric acid. The molecular recognition ability of these cyclic spiroborates was estimated in solution and crystal phases by the use of [Ir(tpy(2))](3+) as a typical example of a cationic guest.

The boron doped diamond (BDD) electrode is presented as an appropriate candidate for next generation glass-free, highly stable and accurate pH sensors. The method used in this study is based on the potential change related to the hydrogen evolution reaction following a current step, which is pH dependent. Alkali cations in the solution have no influence on the accuracy of the pH calibration curve, which provides an advantage with respect to the conventional pH glass electrode.

Mobilized stem cells in the peripheral blood (PB) must be efficiently harvested at the appropriate time before autologous PB stem cell (PBSC) transplantation. Enumeration of CD34+ cells in the PB before apheresis predicts the number of PBSCs that can be collected, but the cytometric techniques used are complex and expensive. Therefore, it is necessary to identify an alternative to the CD34+ cell count in PBSC harvest-time monitoring.

Reward-induced burst firing of dopaminergic neurons has mainly been studied in the primate midbrain. Voltammetry allows high-speed detection of dopamine release in the projection area. Although voltammetry has revealed presynaptic modulation of dopamine release in the striatum, to date, reward-induced release in awakened brains has been recorded only in rodents.

A high accumulation of silicon (Si) is required for overcoming abiotic and biotic stresses, but the molecular mechanisms of Si uptake, especially in dicotyledonous species, is poorly understood. Herein, we report the identification of an influx transporter of Si in two Cucurbita moschata (pumpkin) cultivars greatly differing in Si accumulation, which are used for the rootstocks of bloom and bloomless Cucumis sativus (cucumber), respectively. Heterogeneous expression in both Xenopus oocytes and rice mutant defective in Si uptake showed that the influx transporter from the bloom pumpkin rootstock can transport Si, whereas that from the bloomless rootstock cannot.
