Mutations which permit cAMP binding protein (CRP) to act in the absence of cAMP have been isolated by in vitro mutagenesis of a plasmid containing the cloned crp gene. Adenylate cyclase deficient cells harbouring the mutant (crp*) plasmids exhibited a variety of fermentation profiles on MacConkey indicator plates containing various sugars. beta-galactosidase synthesis in cells carrying the crp* plasmids was activated most by the addition of cGMP as well as cAMP.

Immunohistochemical demonstration of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) was reported in normal salivary glands and in pathologic lesions. Staining patterns of CEA and nonspecific cross-reacting antigen-absorbed CEA (NCAa-CEA) were compared. Normal salivary glands disclosed positive staining by CEA on border and luminal sides of acinar cells and occasionally in components secreted into ductal spaces with both antigens used.

Immunohistochemical identification of alpha 1-antitrypsin (alpha 1-AT) and alpha 1-antichymotrypsin (alpha 1-ACh) in pleomorphic adenomas of salivary glands is reported in order to compare their distribution profiles with those of lysozyme and lactoferrin, already described elsewhere. Normal salivary glands indicated positive alpha 1-AT staining in ductal segments and had no alpha 1-ACh in any glandular cell. Pleomorphic adenomas displayed moderate positivity to alpha 1-AT staining in duct-like, tubular and glandular epithelia which was particularly intense in luminal cells.

The induction and rejoining of DNA strand breaks after gamma-irradiation in three goldfish (Carassius auratus) cell lines with different sensitivities to the lethal effect of gamma-rays has been studied by the DNA strand separation method using hydroxylapatite chromatography. The induction and rejoining of DNA strand breaks was similar in all cell lines. There was also little difference in the degree of inhibition of DNA synthesis immediately after irradiation.

Plasma LRH-immunoreactive substance in puerperal women was very low on days 5 and 10 post-partum and significantly increased between days 10 and 20 post-partum, but remained at a similar level on day 30 post-partum, which was significantly lower than that in eumenorrhoeic women on day 8 or 9 of the normal cycle. Although LRH administration did not significantly increase serum FSH on day 11 post-partum, daily injections of LRH from days 5 through 10 post-partum caused a significantly increased secretion of FSH on day 11 post-partum, both basally and in response to LRH. No significant difference was observed in serum oestradiol and Prl levels on day 11 post-partum between the two groups of women with and without LRH pre-treatment.

In Con A-mediated hemadsorption, high epithelial cell densities resulted in the adsorbance of more guinea pig red blood cells per culture dish but fewer per cell. Malignant epithelia adsorbed twice as many red blood cells as did nonmalignant cells at the same cell density.

Hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian function in women during the first month postpartum has been studied. The plasma LH-RH level in puerperal women was very low on days 5 and 10 postpartum and thereafter increased, but was still significantly lower on day 30 postpartum than that in eumenorrheic women on day 8 or 9 of the normal cycle. Serum FSH reached a very low level on days 5 and 11 postpartum, then gradually increased to a slightly higher level on day 30 postpartum than that in eumenorrheic women.

The cells were more resistant to gamma-rays than mammalian cells and CAF-MM1 cells derived from the normal fin tissue of goldfish. They were also more resistant to UV-irradiation than CAF-MM1 cells.

Reproductive function following advanced ovulation induced by a single injection of 1 microgram synthetic luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH) has been studied in rats. While advanced ovulation induced by an injection of the agent on the day of proestrus was followed by pregnancies occurring as frequently as those in spontaneous ovulation group, incidences of mating behavior, fertilization, and pregnancy were considerably reduced in the advanced ovulation group when induced by an injection of synthetic LH-RH during the early period of diestrus 2. The mean volume of primary oocytes of the three largest follicles at 1.
