Patients with Rett syndrome are known to respond well to music irrespective of their physical and verbal disabilities. Therefore, the relationship between auditory rhythm and their behavior was investigated employing a two-dimensional motion analysis system. Ten female patients aged from three to 17 years were included.

Methods: Attending staff and resident doctors in acute care (anaesthesia, emergency medicine, surgery) and longitudinal care (internal medicine, psychiatry) specialties at a large academic hospital completed an anonymous, web-based survey.
While a protective long-term effect of parity on endometrial cancer risk is well established, the impact of timing of births is not fully understood. We examined the relationship between endometrial cancer risk and reproductive characteristics in a population-based cohort of 2,674,465 Swedish women, 20-72 years of age. During follow-up from 1973 to 2004, 7,386 endometrial cancers were observed.

However, the pain evoked by capsaicin before establishment of the QX-314-mediated block would limit clinical utility. Because TRPV1 channels are also activated by lidocaine, the authors tested whether lidocaine can substitute for capsaicin to introduce QX-314 into nociceptors through TRPV1 channels and produce selective analgesia.

In the lung, surfactant protein C (Sftpc) is known to be a downstream target of thyroid transcription factor-1 (TTF-1)-TAZ transcriptional coactivation.
Objectives: The lung phenotype of Taz-deficient mice was explored.
Using magnetoencephalography, we measured 20-Hz activity induced after the common peroneal nerve (CPN) stimulation in 15 healthy subjects during the execution of foot movement or its motor imagery, and examined whether the 20-Hz activity is suppressed during motor imagery of foot movement. The prominent 20-Hz activity was contralaterally induced in the paracentral area after CPN stimulation, and it was almost completely suppressed during execution of the foot movement and partially suppressed during its motor imagery. These results suggest that the modulation of the 20-Hz activity is a useful indicator of the motor imagery of foot movement.

It has been reported that the 20-Hz rhythmic activity is induced in the primary motor cortex after median nerve stimulation and the amount of the induced activity is decreased when the primary motor cortex is activated. In the present study, to elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying mirror therapy, we investigated whether the mirror reflection of a hand holding a pencil modulates the stimulus-induced 20-Hz activity.

This crossover in incidence rates between black and white ethnic groups has been well described, has not been completely understood, and has been viewed as an artifact.
Methods: To quantify this incidence rate crossover, we examined data for 440 653 women with invasive breast cancer from the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database from January 1, 1975, through December 31, 2004.
Glutamate transporters are involved in neural differentiation, neuronal survival, and synaptic transmission. In the present study, we examined glutamate transporter 1 (GLT1) expression in the neonatal somatosensory cortex of C57BL/6 mice, and pursued its role in somatosensory development by comparing barrel development between GLT1 knock-out and control mice. During the first few neonatal days, a critical period for barrels, GLT1 expression is strikingly upregulated in cortical astrocytes, whereas it was downregulated in neuronal elements to below the detection threshold.

TAZ acts as a coactivator for several transcription factors as well as a modulator of membrane-associated PDZ domain-containing proteins, but its (patho)physiological roles remain unknown. Here we show that gene inactivation of TAZ in mice resulted in pathological changes in the kidney and lung that resemble the common human diseases polycystic kidney disease and pulmonary emphysema.

We assessed the efficacy of NT-702 in an experimental IC model as compared with cilostazol and additionally investigated the pharmacological property in vitro and ex vivo. NT-702 selectively inhibited PDE3 (IC(50)=0.

Although glaucoma is often associated with elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), IOP elevation is not detected in a significant subset of glaucomas, such as normal tension glaucoma (NTG). Moreover, in some glaucoma patients, significant IOP reduction does not prevent progression of the disease.

Genes that are contained in a particular pathway or that respond similarly to experimental conditions could be co-expressed and show similar patterns of expression on a microarray. Using any of a variety of clustering methods or gene network analyses we can partition genes of interest into groups, clusters, or modules based on measures of similarity.

Rolandic rhythmic activity of about 20 Hz is reproducibly induced after median nerve stimulation and has been reported to be related to various types of movements including actual movement, motor imagery and action observation. We recorded neuromagnetic brain activity from 11 healthy subjects to investigate whether the way to present hand actions modulates the 20-Hz activity after median nerve stimulation.

However, no animal model has yet been established that is precisely similar to periodontitis in humans. In the present study, we examined the use of Shiba goats as a model for spontaneous periodontitis.

Virulence factors like lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from those microorganisms initiate host immune response and gingival chronic inflammation. As a result, elevated receptor activator of NF-kappaB ligand (RANKL) expression stimulates alveolar bone resorption followed by loss of teeth.

We also found that Y4 CP inhibits the release of interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8 from human gingival fibroblast (HGF). Thus Y4 CP induces various responses in localized tissue and leads to the secretion of several cytokines.

The proliferations of human promyelotic leukemia HL-60 cells were inhibited as the concentrations of these flavonols were increased. The order of the extent of growth inhibition by the flavonols at a concentration of 20 microM is as follows: pentamethylquercetin > syringetin > isorhamnetin > quercetin > kaempherol > myricetin.

In this study, we investigated how the contribution of MaxiK channel to the regulation of basal UBSM mechanical activity is altered in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Although the urinary bladder preparations from both control and diabetic rats were almost quiescent in their basal mechanical activities, they generated spontaneous rhythmic contractions in response to a MaxiK channel blocker, iberiotoxin (IbTx).

DPC (100 microM), which caused only a minor effect by itself, significantly augmented the relaxant responses to forskolin and SNP in the preparations contracted with 30 mM KCl. On the other hand, DPC did not affect the relaxant responses to nifedipine and cromakalim.

Background: The inflammatory responses mediated by IL-1 play an important role in periodontal tissue destruction. Although numerous studies have attempted to elucidate the dynamic movement involved in chronic periodontitis, the results have often conflicted.

We report a case of a metastatic lung tumor from an occult thyroid oncocytic carcinoma, growing into the bronchial lumen. A 70-year-old woman was referred to our hospital because of abnormal shadows which had been increasing in size for 4 years, in the chest radiograph. Bronchoscopy revealed an endobronchial tumor at the orifice of the left B4b.
