Partial cystectomy procedures for urinary bladder-related dysfunction involve long recovery periods, during which urodynamic studies (UDS) intermittently assess lower urinary tract function. However, UDS are not patient-friendly, they exhibit user-to-user variability, and they amount to snapshots in time, limiting the ability to collect continuous, longitudinal data. These procedures also pose the risk of catheter-associated urinary tract infections, which can progress to ascending pyelonephritis due to prolonged lower tract manipulation in high-risk patients.

Background: Data on advanced prostate cancer (PCa) suggest more prior systemic therapies might reduce tumor immune responsiveness. In treatment-naïve primary PCa, recent work correlated intratumoral plasma cell content with enhanced tumor immune-responsiveness. We sought to identify features of localized PCa at a high risk of recurrence following local treatment with high plasma cell content to help focus future immune-based neoadjuvant trials.

The cell of origin of oncogenic transformation is a determinant of therapeutic sensitivity, but the mechanisms governing cell-of-origin-driven differences in therapeutic response have not been delineated. Leukemias initiating in hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) are less sensitive to chemotherapy and highly express the transcription factor (EVI1) compared with leukemias derived from myeloid progenitors. Here, we compared leukemias initiated in either HSCs or myeloid progenitors to reveal a novel function for EVI1 in modulating p53 protein abundance and activity.

After transurethral prostatectomy, erectile dysfunction and ejaculatory dysfunction are significant concerns for patients. We compared ejaculatory hood-sparing technique in patients who underwent photoselective vaporization of the prostate using the GreenLight Laser (EjS-PVP) with the ejaculatory hood-sparing technique in patients who underwent bipolar button plasma vaporization of the prostate (EjS-BPVP) in the surgical management of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Twenty-seven patients were randomized to either undergo EjS-PVP or EjS-BPVP from August 2016 to March 2018.

Purpose: To determine if patients can accurately estimate volumes voided in a bladder diary, and to determine the patient characteristics that are most predictive of accuracy in volume estimation in the workup of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTs).

Methods: We prospectively collected data on 180 consecutive patients undergoing a workup for LUTs at a tertiary care facility. Data collected include American Urological Association Symptom Scores (AUASS), flow time and rate, and one time measurement of voided volume into a blinded uroflow.

Background: The gene encoding the serine biosynthesis pathway enzyme PHGDH is located in a region of focal genomic copy number gain in human cancers. Cells with PHGDH amplification are dependent on enzyme expression for proliferation. However, dependence on increased PHGDH expression extends beyond production of serine alone, and further studies of PHGDH function are necessary to elucidate its role in cancer cells.
