Age Group-specific Reference Intervals for the Elecsys Anti-Müllerian Hormone Assay in Healthy Korean Women: a Nationwide Population-based Study.

Background: Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is one of the most reliable markers of ovarian reserve. Automated AMH assays are widely used in clinical laboratories, but reference intervals for the Elecsys AMH assay for Asian populations have not yet been determined. We aimed to determine reference intervals in healthy Korean women.

Status of Four Trace Elements in Elderly Patients with Online Hemodiafiltration.

Background: Essential trace elements play key roles in multiple biological systems, and hemodialysis patients are at risk for deficiency of essential trace elements. The aim of the study was to assess the essential element status in end stage renal disease patients undergoing online hemodiafiltration (online HDF) in outpatient dialysis clinic.

Methods: A total of 28 Korean patients with regular online HDF were included.

Comparison of second- and third-generation immunoassays for detection of anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies.

Anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies (anti-CCPs) are important diagnostic markers for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We evaluated the analytical and clinical performance of the QUANTA Flash CCP3 (INOVA Diagnostics, USA), a fully automated third-generation anti-CCP assay, in comparison with three second-generation anti-CCP (CCP2) assays. A total of 300 sera (67 from RA patients, 64 from other rheumatic diseases, 43 from osteoarthritis [OA], and 126 from other conditions) were tested with QUANTA Flash CCP3, Kallestad Anti-CCP II (Bio-Rad, USA), Elecsys Anti-CCP (Roche Diagnostics GmbH, Germany), and ARCHITECT Anti-CCP (Abbott Diagnostics, USA).

The usefulness of hand washing during field training to prevent acute respiratory illness in a military training facility.

Hand washing plays a key role in preventing respiratory infection in many clinical settings. However, its effectiveness in preventing acute respiratory illness (ARI) during field training in military training facilities has been not studied.A quasi-interventional study was performed to evaluate the prevalence of ARIs over 4 weeks in a Korean army training center in South Korea from January 2009 to February 2009.

Hb variants in Korea: effect on HbA1c using five routine methods.

Background: Quantification of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is a challenge in patients with hemoglobin (Hb) variants. We evaluated the impact of various Hb variants on five routine HbA1c assays by comparing with the IFCC reference measurement procedure (RMP).

Methods: Whole blood samples showing warning flags or no results on routine HPLC HbA1c assays were confirmed for Hb variants and were submitted to HbA1c quantification using Sebia Capillarys 2 Flex Piercing, Roche Tina-quant HbA1c Gen.

Clinical Pharmacogenetic Testing and Application: Laboratory Medicine Clinical Practice Guidelines.

Pharmacogenetic testing for clinical applications is steadily increasing. Correct and adequate use of pharmacogenetic tests is important to reduce unnecessary medical costs and adverse patient outcomes. This document contains recommended pharmacogenetic testing guidelines for clinical application, interpretation, and result reporting through a literature review and evidence-based expert opinions for the clinical pharmacogenetic testing covered by public medical insurance in Korea.

Clinical Utility of Measurement of Vitamin D-Binding Protein and Calculation of Bioavailable Vitamin D in Assessment of Vitamin D Status.

Background: The associations of vitamin D deficiency with various clinical conditions highlighted the importance of vitamin D testing. Currently, clinicians measure only the total 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration, regardless of its bioavailability. We aimed to determine the effect of vitamin D-binding protein (VDBP) on 25(OH)D bioavailability.

Calibration of High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Values From the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey Data, 2008 to 2015.

Background: For correct interpretation of the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), the values should be comparable to reference values. We aimed to suggest a way to calibrate KNHANES HDL-C data from 2008 to 2015 to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reference method values.

Methods: We derived three calibration equations based on comparisons between the HDL-C values of the KNHANES laboratory and the CDC reference method values in 2009, 2012, and 2015 using commutable frozen serum samples.

The 99th percentile values of six cardiac troponin assays established for a reference population using strict selection criteria.

Background: Since the 99th percentile reference limit for cardiac troponin (Tn) can vary depending on the reference population, Sandoval et al. published systematic selection criteria. In this study, these systematic criteria were applied for the first time to obtain the 99th percentile reference limits for 6 Tn tests.

Measuring cell surface area and deformability of individual human red blood cells over blood storage using quantitative phase imaging.

The functionality and viability of stored human red blood cells (RBCs) is an important clinical issue in transfusions. To systematically investigate changes in stored whole blood, the hematological properties of individual RBCs were quantified in blood samples stored for various periods with and without a preservation solution called citrate phosphate dextrose adenine-1 (CPDA-1). With 3-D quantitative phase imaging techniques, the optical measurements for 3-D refractive index (RI) distributions and membrane fluctuations were done at the individual cell level.

Comparing Results of Five Glomerular Filtration Rate-Estimating Equations in the Korean General Population: MDRD Study, Revised Lund-Malmö, and Three CKD-EPI Equations.

Background: Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is a widely used index of kidney function. Recently, new formulas such as the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equations or the Lund-Malmö equation were introduced for assessing eGFR. We compared them with the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) Study equation in the Korean adult population.

First Case of Biphenotypic/bilineal (B/myeloid, B/monocytic) Mixed Phenotype Acute Leukemia with t(9;22)(q34;q11.2);BCR-ABL1.

Mixed phenotype acute leukemia (MPAL) includes biphenotypic leukemia, bilineal leukemia, or its combination by the 2008 WHO classification. A few cases of combined biphenotypic/bilineal MPAL have been reported so far; they all had biphenotypic expressions in only one of the two distinct leukemic populations. A 43-year-old female presented with leukocytosis and bicytopenia.

Presence of Additional Cytogenetic Abnormality of t(1;15) at Diagnosis of Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia-Chronic Phase.

At diagnosis, fewer than 10% of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) patients have additional cytogenetic abnormalities (ACAs), which are frequently found in transformation to blast crisis. We report a case of CML-chronic phase (CML-CP) that showed t(1;15) at diagnosis. A 64-year-old man presented with sustained leukocytosis and thrombocytosis.

Determination of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I 99th percentile upper reference limits in a healthy Korean population.

Objectives: This study aimed to determine the 99th percentile upper reference limit (URL) concentration of cardiac troponin I (cTnI) with a high-sensitivity assay in a Korean population.

Design And Methods: Cardio-healthy males and females were enrolled between March 2014 and March 2015. Participants with possible subclinical conditions were excluded on the basis of laboratory measures (primary: estimated glomerular filtration rate and glycated hemoglobin; secondary: B-type natriuretic peptide).

An approach to standardization of urine sediment analysis via suggestion of a common manual protocol.

Introduction: The results of urine sediment analysis have been reported semiquantitatively. However, as recent guidelines recommend quantitative reporting of urine sediment, and with the development of automated urine sediment analyzers, there is an increasing need for quantitative analysis of urine sediment. Here, we developed a protocol for urine sediment analysis and quantified the results.

Genetic Polymorphism of CYP2D6 and Clomiphene Concentrations in Infertile Patients with Ovulatory Dysfunction Treated with Clomiphene Citrate.

CYP2D6 is primarily responsible for the metabolism of clomiphene citrate (CC). The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between CYP2D6 genotypes, concentrations of CC and its major metabolites and drug response in infertility patients. We studied 42 patients with ovulatory dysfunction treated with only CC.

Acute Cholecystitis in Patients with Scrub Typhus.

Acute cholecystitis is a rare complication of scrub typhus. Although a few such cases have been reported in patients with scrub typhus, the clinical course is not well described. Of 12 patients, acute cholecystitis developed in 66.

Safety, Tolerability, and Pharmacokinetics of Fosphenytoin Loading in Patients With Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

Objective: Fosphenytoin is frequently used for the rapid delivery of phenytoin in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) patients. The present study was performed to investigate the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetic profiles of rapid intravenous loading of fosphenytoin in SAH patients.

Methods: Fosphenytoin was administered intravenously as a single loading dose of 20 mg phenytoin-equivalent/kg at an infusion rate of 150 mg PE/min to 30 adult patients with SAH, who experienced seizures or had a clinical suspicion of nonconvulsive seizures.

Vancomycin AUC24 /MIC Ratio in Patients with Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Pneumonia.

Background: Vancomycin is the treatment of choice for serious methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections. The area under the concentration-time curve from 0 to 24 hr (AUC24 )/minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ratio was recently introduced as a parameter for assessing clinical outcome by S. aureus.

Usefulness of plasma neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin as an early marker of acute kidney injury after cardiopulmonary bypass in Korean cardiac patients: a prospective observational study.

Objectives: Development of acute kidney injury (AKI) after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is relatively common and associated with increased mortality. Recently, plasma neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) was used for the prediction of AKI. We evaluated the clinical usefulness of plasma NGAL.

Sternal Osteomyelitis Caused by Gordonia bronchialis after Open-Heart Surgery.

We report the case of a deep sternal wound infection with sternal osteomyelitis caused by Gordonia bronchialis after open-heart surgery. The isolate was identified as a G. bronchialis by 16S rRNA and hsp65 gene sequencing, having initially been misidentified as a Rhodococcus by a commercial phenotypic identification system.
