Involvement of an efflux system in mediating high level of fluoroquinolone resistance in Mycobacterium smegmatis.

A wild type strain of Mycobacterium smegmatis mc2 155 was serially adapted to 64 fold of minimal inhibitory concentration of an antimycobacterial agent, ciprofloxacin. This clone (CIPr) exhibited cross resistance to ofloxacin and ethidium bromide. The rate of drug efflux was accelerated in CIPr compared to the wild type strain.

Brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) in childhood bacterial meningitis.

Multiple congenital synostosis of the upper limb associated with ulnar hypoplasia and cleft hand. A case report.

A girl, 15 years of age, with humeroradial, humero-ulnar, intercarpal and intermetacarpal synostosis, associated with a deficient ulna and a cleft hand, is described. Classification was difficult. She was fitted with a prosthesis.

Characterization of microbial communities in anaerobic bioreactors using molecular probes.

The microbial community structure of twenty-one single-phase and one two-phase full-scale anaerobic sewage sludge digesters was evaluated using oligonucleotide probes complementary to conserved tracts of the 16S rRNAs of phylogenetically defined groups of methanogens and sulfate-reducing bacteria. These probe results were interpreted in combination with results from traditional chemical analyses and metabolic activity assays. It was determined that methanogens in "healthy" mesophilic, single-phase sewage sludge digesters accounted for approximately 8-12% of the total community and that Methanosarcinales and Methanomicrobiales constituted the majority of the total methanogen population.

A comparative clinical trial of albendazole versus metronidazole in children with giardiasis.

In an open, randomized parallel group study, the safety and efficacy of albendazole was compared with metronidazole for the treatment of giardiasis in children. Sixty four children of age ranging from 2-12 years was randomized to receive either albendazole suspension 400 mg daily for 5 days or metronidazole suspension 400 mg daily for 5 days or metronidazole suspension 7.

Allylamine (AA) is an electrophilic amine with a long history of experimental usage because of its extremely potent and relatively specific cardiovascular toxicity; it has been utilized in a variety of experimental models attempting to mimic human atherosclerotic lesions, myocardial infarction, and vascular injury. Even though the exact mechanisms by which AA causes vascular lesions remain unresolved, recent studies on the acute effects of AA exposure in rats strongly suggest that deamination to the aldehyde acrolein, oxidative stress, and the resultant increase in lipid peroxidation, generation of .OH radicals, and acute depletion of glutathione (GSH) may be some of the causative factors in AA-induced vascular lesions.

Pulmonary function tests in normal Indian children and changes in respiratory disorders.

To document the normal values of pulmonary function tests in children and changes occurring in their values with various respiratory disorders, a study was carried over a period of one year in 95 healthy controls (39 females and 56 males) of 8-13 years of age and 51 cases with respiratory disorders (bronchial asthma-31, pneumonia-10, empyema-10) of matched age, sex and height distribution. The lung functions studied were FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, PEFR and FEF25-75%. In children with bronchial asthma, the FEV1/FVC%, PEFR and FEF25-75% were reduced in accordance with the severity of the disease.

Outcome in relation to Apgar score in term neonates.

Sixty four asphyxiated term babies (Apgar score of 6 or less at 5 minutes) and 90 non-asphyxiated term babies (controls) were studied. Of these, 40 cases and 48 controls could be followed up. Mortality and neurodevelopmental outcome were studied in both the cases and controls.

Clinical predictors of Japanese encephalitis.

Over a 5-year period, virological investigations for Japanese encephalitis (JE) were conducted in children presenting with acute encephalopathic illness. Clinical features of JE-positive patients (n = 116) were compared with patients in whom the diagnosis could be excluded (n = 57). Multivariate analysis by logistic regression revealed that two clinical signs--central hyperpneic breathing pattern and extrapyramidal signs--were significant predictors of the diagnosis.

Behavior development in normal neonates.

The behavior of normal neonates was studied on day 3, 10 and 30 of life with the help of Brazelton's Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS). The behavior items were clustered and each cluster was scored. The cluster scores increased on subsequent observations in both term and preterm neonates, the increase usually being significant.

Enkephalin antisense peptides: design, synthesis, and biological activity.

The sensory neuropathy of Friedreich's ataxia: an autopsy study of a case with prolonged survival.

Observations have been made on a patient with Friedreich's ataxia who died 52 years after the onset of symptoms. The pathology of the brain and spinal cord was typical of this disorder. Apart from loss of dorsal root ganglion cells, severe loss of secondary sensory neurons was observed, including the nucleus dorsalis in the spinal cord, the spinal and principal trigeminal nuclei and, in particular, the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus in the brain stem.

Laser mediated release of dye from liposomes.

Liposomes made from phospholipids and containing sulforhodamine dye (1-50 mM) have been irradiated with nanosecond and picosecond laser pulses. Individual liposomes were locally heated by laser absorption of dye dimers during a single laser pulse, and heating was sufficient to release the liposome contents. The extent of dye release produced by a single laser pulse was shown to be quantitatively dependent on several interdependent variables, including dye concentration, liposome size, laser excitation parameters and initial temperature of the dye-liposome system.

Infection with hepatitis A, B, delta, and human immunodeficiency viruses in children receiving cycled cancer chemotherapy.

Serological markers of hepatitis A, B, and Delta and human immunodeficiency viruses were studied in 25 children receiving cancer chemotherapy. Eighty-eight percent had pre-existing HAV immunity which was unaltered by chemotherapy. HDV infection was observed in 8% while HIV was conspicuous by its absence.

The development of the acid deposition and oxidant model (ADOM).

This paper describes the development and testing of the Acid Deposition and Oxidant Model (ADOM), a nine-year project funded by a consortium consisting of Environment Ontario, Environment Canada, the German Umweltbundesamt, and the Electric Power Research Institute. The project consisted of three major phases: a design phase, an implementation phase, and an evaluation phase. In the design phase, the system being modeled was divided into its components-transport, gas phase chemistry, aqueous phase chemistry, dry deposition and cloud processes.
