Article Synopsis
  • Strongyloides is a genus of parasitic nematodes with about 50 species that can infect vertebrates, including three that specifically target primates: S. stercoralis, S. fuelleborni, and S. cebus.
  • A genotyping study of S. fuelleborni from rhesus macaques in Myanmar revealed a new haplotype group and provided insights into the genetic diversity of this species.
  • Phylogenetic analysis showed that S. fuelleborni is closely related to Strongyloides from cattle and sheep, while S. cebus is more distantly related, suggesting that these parasitic species evolved independently within primate hosts.

Intravenous administration of high-dose ascorbic acid (AA) has been reported as a treatment for cancer patients. However, cancer patients with renal failure cannot receive this therapy because high-dose AA infusion can have side effects. To solve this problem, we evaluated the antitumor activity of a lipophilic stable AA derivative, 2--α-d-glucopyranosyl-6--(2-pentylheptanoyl)-l-ascorbic acid (6-bOcta-AA-2G).

Both cholesterol and α-tocopherol are essential lipophilic nutrients for humans and animals. Although cholesterol in excess causes severe problems such as coronary heart disease, it is a necessary component of cell membranes and is the precursor for the biosynthesis of steroid hormones and bile acids. Niemann-Pick C1-like 1 (NPC1L1) is a cholesterol transporter that is highly expressed in the small intestine and liver in humans and plays an important role in cholesterol homeostasis.
