Seroprevalence of bovine leukemia virus and association with bovine infectious abortion in Creole breeds from tropical grazing herds in the Colombian Caribbean.

Background And Aim: In the Caribbean region of Colombia, the concomitance of endemic infectious agents is a common problem, and coinfections are possible, increasing the complexity of cattle herds' sanitary, reproductive, and productive problems. This study aimed to estimate the seroprevalence of bovine leukemia virus and its association with bovine infectious abortion in grazing Creole breeds from tropical herds in the Colombian Caribbean.

Materials And Methods: For the determination of bovine leukemia virus (BLV), bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), bovine herpes virus-1 (BoHV-1), and (NC), the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technique was used.

Status of gastrointestinal nematode infections and associated epidemiological factors in sheep from Córdoba, Colombia.

Gastrointestinal nematodes cause serious economic losses in sheep production systems. To determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with these parasites, a study was conducted on 595 sheep in Córdoba, Colombia. Prevalence and parasite burden were determined using the McMaster technique.

Lessons learned of emerging Chikungunya virus in two populations of social vulnerability of the Colombian tropics: epidemiological analysis.

Background: Notwithstanding the strong epidemiological impact of the Chikungunya in the Colombian Caribbean, in 2014, not the entire population were affected in the same way. This study describe the demographic, socio-economic, clinical and epidemiological aspects of the de Chikungunya in Ovejas and Corozal, two neighboring municipalities with high vulnerability in health in the Colombian Caribbean.

Zika virus disease, microcephaly and Guillain-Barré syndrome in Colombia: epidemiological situation during 21 months of the Zika virus outbreak, 2015-2017.

Background: The Zika virus disease (ZVD) has had a huge impact on public health in Colombia for the numbers of people affected and the presentation of Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) and microcephaly cases associated to ZVD.

Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was carried out, we analyze the epidemiological situation of ZVD and its association with microcephaly and GBS during a 21-month period, from October 2015 to June 2017. The variables studied were: (i) ZVD cases, (ii) ZVD cases in pregnant women, (iii) laboratory-confirmed ZVD in pregnant women, (iv) ZVD cases associated with microcephaly, (v) laboratory-confirmed ZVD associated with microcephaly, and (vi) ZVD associated to GBS cases.

Epidemic outbreak of Chikungunya in two neighboring towns in the Colombian Caribbean: a survival analysis.

Background: The first autochthonous Chikungunya virus transmission in Colombia was reported in September 2014. Three months later, every town in the Caribbean region was affected, including the bordering towns of Ovejas and Corozal, in the department of Sucre. The objective of the study was to analyze and compare the temporal dynamics of the outbreak of Chikungunya in two towns of the department of Sucre.

Trends in animal rabies surveillance in the endemic state of Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Rabies is a viral zoonosis affecting mammal species and causes large economic losses. Included among the neglected diseases, it is still insufficiently addressed by governments and the international community, despite formal surveillance and control programs. This study used a dataset of 10,112 rabies diagnoses in animals provided by the Brazilian passive surveillance system from 2001 to 2012.
