Three hundred sixty Peterson x Arbor Acres chicks were fed two feed regimens to compare their effects on adipose cellularity, adipocyte lipolysis, hepatic glucose oxidation, adipocyte lipogenesis, bird performance, and abdominal fat level. Broilers in the first regimen had ad libitum access to feed throughout the 7-wk experiment, whereas broilers in the second regimen consumed feed at will throughout the experiment except that they were subjected to feed restriction (1.49 kcal/g BW2/3 daily) from 7 to 12 d of age (DOA).

An experiment was conducted with Single Comb White Leghorn (SCWL) layers to determine the effect of feeding either corn-soybean meal (C-S) or barley-corn soybean meal (B-C-S) diets with or without condensed cane molasses solubles (CCMS) or with or without CCMS-1,100 mg Lactobacillus (Lacto)/kg (ppm) diet on performance, nutrient retentions, digesta passage rate, and histological changes of the gastrointestinal (GI) tracts. Six dietary treatments were fed for eight 28-d periods and consisted of C-S (control), C-S + CCMS, C-S + CCMS-1,100 ppm Lacto (4.4 x 107 cfu/mg Lacto), B-C-S (control), B-C-S + CCMS, and B-C-S + CCMS-1,100 ppm Lacto.

Two experiments were carried out for six and seven 28-d periods, respectively, with DeKalb XL Single Comb White Leghorn laying pullets to ascertain the effect of feeding 1,100 mg Lactobacillus (Lacto)/kg diet (ppm) and 2,200 ppm Lacto diets, and the supplementation of these diets with 1 and 3% fat, on layer performance and nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus retention. The dietary treatments were corn-soybean meal (C-S) control, C-S plus condensed cane molasses solubles (CCMS)-1,100 ppm Lacto (4.4 x 10(7) cfu/mg Lacto), and C-S plus CCMS-2,200 ppm Lacto (8.

Blastoderm degeneration is an early embryonic lethal condition observed in selected paired matings within a line of dwarf Single Comb White Leghorn chickens that results in a 25% reduction of the hatch of fertilized eggs. The disorder is macroscopically evident at 32 h of incubation by the presence of a small localized indentation on the outer periphery of the expanding blastoderm. The affected blastoderms undergo a series of rapid macroscopic degenerative changes that conclude at about 120 h characterized by the presence of dispersed blastoderm fragments on the surface of the egg's yolk.

Blood ring describes an early embryonic failure that has been observed in a subline of Wrolstad Medium White turkeys. The condition can be detected by candling at approximately 96 h of incubation when shell pigmentation is minimal. The condition, macroscopically visible as early as 66 h, is characterized by the presence of uncoalesced blood islands, an erythrocyte-engorged sinus terminalis, and the absence of an extra-embryonic circulatory system.

Three feeding experiments were conducted with Single Comb White Leghorn hens to determine the effects of Lupinus albus cv. Ultra on performance. Raw, autoclaved, and extruded lupins were fed at 10 and 20% of the diet for 12 wk in Experiment 1.

Twenty-seven single-pair matings of Coturnix quail produced 48 sons and 50 daughters. Parents and progeny were reared under similar conditions and killed at 58 days of age. Live and abdominal fat weights were obtained.

Coturnix quail are used for human consumption, and loss of live weight prior to slaughter must be minimized. Feed, but not water, was withdrawn from 49-day-old, male Coturnix quail for times (treatments) of 0, 6, 12, 24, and 48 hr. Number of quail per treatment ranged from 24 to 26.

Pedigreed matings in a commercial purebred female broiler selection line produced 311 males and 341 females, which were slaughtered at 50 days of age. Coefficients of variation of abdominal fat weights were higher than live and carcass weights. The coefficient of variation was reduced when abdominal fat was regressed on live weight or when percentage of live or carcass weight was used.

Ten males and 10 females from each of five commercial broiler strains were weighed and slaughtered at 55 days of age. Over all, mean live body weight was 2112 g for males and 1702 g for females and abdominal fat was 2.9% (males) and 3.
