Article Synopsis
  • Scientists found that a protein called soluble Axl (sAxl) is released into the blood when the liver is damaged, which could help doctors check for liver diseases.*
  • In a study, sAxl was compared to two other tests to see how well it could detect different levels of liver damage, and it was found to be a good indicator, especially when combined with another protein called albumin.*
  • The sAxl/albumin test is cheaper and easier to do, making it useful for checking for serious liver problems when other tests are too expensive or can't be done.*

Patients with chronic liver disease (CLD) and cirrhosis are at high risk for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Current diagnostic tools for HCC detection include imaging techniques and serum biomarkers such as α-fetoprotein (AFP). Yet, these methods are limited in sensitivity and specificity to accurately detect early HCC.

Levels of soluble Axl (sAxl) are routinely assessed in human sera by sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Although sAxl values are suggested to diagnose different types of disorders, no uniform ELISA method is available, allowing the reliable interassay comparison between results. Furthermore, little is known about the stability of sAxl under storage conditions, which is a relevant parameter for biomedical trials.

Unlabelled: In hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), intrahepatic metastasis frequently correlates with epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) of malignant hepatocytes. Several mechanisms have been identified to be essentially involved in hepatocellular EMT, among them transforming growth factor (TGF)-β signaling. Here we show the up-regulation and activation of the receptor tyrosine kinase Axl in EMT-transformed hepatoma cells.
