Objective: To evaluate the ability of near-infrared light transillumination (NIR-LT) to detect interproximal enamel and dentinal caries lesions compared to clinical-visual inspection aided by fiber-optic transillumination (FOTI).

Method And Materials: From 170 Finnish adolescents aged 15 to 17 years, 5,294 interproximal surfaces of premolars and molars were examined first clinical-visually aided by FOTI (VI+FOTI) using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) classification. Subsequently, the surfaces were examined using NIR-LT.

We examined cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of dietary factors with caries experience in a population sample of 487 children aged 6-9 years at baseline examinations of the Physical Activity and Nutrition in Children (PANIC) Study. Altogether, 406 of these children attended 2-year follow-up examinations. Food consumption and eating frequency were assessed using 4-day food records, diet quality using the Baltic Sea Diet Score (BSDS) and eating behaviour using the Children's Eating Behavior Questionnaire.

Tricho-dento-osseous syndrome (TDO) is a rare type of dominantly inherited ectodermal dysplasia so far described only in a few families and associated with 3 known mutations in the DLX3 homeobox gene. Here, we describe two families of Finnish origin that segregate features of TDO in several generations. The affected family members have sparse or curly/kinky hair at birth, markedly delayed or advanced dental maturity, defective tooth enamel and dentin, taurodontic molars, multiple dental abscesses and filling of tooth pulps with amorphous denticle-like material as well as an increased density and/or thickness of craniofacial bones.
