[Science and technological innovation in health in Cuba: results in selected problemsCiência e inovação tecnológica em saúde em Cuba: resultados em problemas selecionados].

In Cuba, health research is based on the priorities of national scientific policy, derived from the health status of the population. The objective of this article is to describe the characteristics of the System of Science and Technological Innovation and how the results of its research benefit the health of the population groups. To this end, research related to the generation of products and technologies, diabetes, dengue and disability was selected.

Improving Disability Care in Countries of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America.

Persons with disabilities constitute one of the most vulnerable groups in every society; their identification, assessment and care present a major challenge. In 2001-2003, Cuba conducted the first comprehensive national study of persons with disabilities in the Americas. In 2007-2010, the study was replicated in Bolivia, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Venezuela, at their governments' request.

The Cuban Twin Registry: initial findings and perspectives.

The Cuban Twin Registry is a nation-wide, prospective, population-based twin registry comprising all zygosity types and ages. It was initiated in 2004 to study genetic and environmental contributions to complex diseases with high morbidity and mortality in the Cuban population. The database contains extensive information from 55,400 twin pairs enrolled in the period 2004-2006.
