Objective: This retrospective cohort study aims to compare donor site morbidity of three commonly used upper extremity flaps used in head and neck reconstructive surgery: scapular tip free flap (STFF), radial forearm free flap (RFFF), and pectoralis major pedicled flap (PMPF).
Methods: The billing database of an urban, academic, tertiary otolaryngology practice was queried to identify patients who underwent STFF, RFFF, and PMPF from 2020 to 2023. The primary outcome was identification of donor site pain and need for physical therapy (PT) referral after undergoing reconstruction.
Objective: To identify current airway management practice patterns during free tissue transfer (FTT) reconstruction of head and neck defects.
Methods: A 27-question survey distributed to American Head and Neck Society (AHNS) members. Correlation between surgeon and patient variables with likelihood to perform tracheotomy and tracheotomy technique were evaluated.
Purpose: Investigate whether adjuvant everolimus, an mTOR inhibitor, improves progression-free survival (PFS) in advanced-stage head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and provide outcomes related to correlative biological factors associated with disease control.
Patients And Methods: This was a prospective, randomized, double-blind phase II trial of patients with advanced-stage HNSCC from 13 institutions who were confirmed disease-free post-definitive therapy and enrolled between December 2010 and March 2015. Patients received adjuvant everolimus or placebo daily (10 mg, oral) for a maximum of 1 year.

Objective: Residency interviews serve as an opportunity for prospective applicants to evaluate programs and to determine their potential fit within them. The 2019 SARS-CoV2 pandemic mandated programs conduct interviews virtually for the first time. The purpose of this study was to assess applicant perspectives on the virtual interview.

An alternative classification, malignant mixed tumor-not otherwise (MMT-NOS), is a diagnosis of exclusion for neoplasms that do not fit the previous histologically profiled subtypes. The objective was to provide a comprehensive assessment of MMT-NOS and determine prognostic factors.

Metastasis to lymph nodes in the presence or absence of a known primary site and occurrence of these tumors in non-sun-exposed sites have also been described; however, an incidence of recurrent disease arising in the palatine tonsil in the absence of any detectable primary lesion has never been reported in the literature. In this report, we discuss a case of a 72-year-old female who was found to have a single axillary lymph node, which was resected and proved to be positive forMCC of unknown primary (MCCUP).

Yet the understanding of the scope of this problem is hindered by lack of robust registries for nonmelanoma skin cancer. The risk factor responsible for most of these cancers, exposure to ultraviolet radiation, can be mitigated.

Childhood cancer survivors are at risk for ongoing health risks related to their initial treatment. One potential long-term complication following radiation is the development of secondary tumors, including peripheral nerve tumors, such as schwannomas. We present three adolescent and young adult (AYA)-aged survivors of pediatric cancer (22-40 years), followed in our AYA survivorship clinic.

A 70-year-old female presented with a neck mass and sporadic dry cough, often leading to fits of coughing severe enough to cause vomiting. The patient reported that touching the mass triggered the cough. On examination, a 2.

Despite the relatively high prevalence of this disease, breast cancer manifestations in the head and neck are relatively rare. Supraclavicular lymphadenopathy and bony metastases to the mandible and maxilla are the most common manifestation of breast cancer in the head and neck.

This may be secondary to trauma, neoplasm, both intracranial and extracranial, infection, and neurologic disease. When evaluating a patient with isolated facial anesthesia, the head and neck surgeon often thinks of adenoid cystic carcinoma, which has a propensity for perineural invasion and spread.

Unlabelled: Transient hypocalcemia after thyroidectomy is not uncommon and the risk increases with the extent of neck surgery. We report a case of severe and prolonged hypocalcemia after total thyroidectomy complicated by thoracic duct injury. Hypoparathyroidism and thoracic duct injury are potential complications following total thyroidectomy with extensive lymph node dissection.

Metastatic masses of the skull base are a rare manifestation of systemic malignancies. Breast cancer is the most common cause of skull base metastases.

Importance: The trigeminocardiac reflex refers to the sudden development of bradycardia or even asystole with arterial hypotension from manipulation of any sensory branches of the trigeminal nerve. Although it has only rarely been associated with morbidity and tends to be self-limited with removal of the stimulus, it is an important phenomenon for head and neck surgeons to recognize and respond to.
Observations: We present the case of a woman in her late 60s with maxillary alveolar ridge squamous cell carcinoma who developed episodes of asystole and bradycardia during posterior maxillary manipulation for an infrastructure maxillectomy at a tertiary academic medical center.

Free tissues transfer has been well-described in infants but there is limited data on techniques for reconstruction of large neck defects with regional myocutaneous flaps in this population. We report on the use of a lower island trapezius myocutaneous flap to reconstruct a large posterior neck and occiput wound in an 18-month-old child. The use of a regional myocutaneous flap allowed for reliable transfer of a relatively large volume of skin and soft tissue, providing coverage of the internal jugular vein and spinal accessory nerve as well as limiting the likelihood of debilitating scar contracture.
