Shiga toxin-producing (STEC) and the STEC subgroup enterohemorrhagic cause intestinal infections with symptoms ranging from watery diarrhea to hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS). A key tool for the epidemiological differentiation of STEC is serotyping.
