Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis is a common disease with a significant impact on the quality of life. Topical drug delivery to the paranasal sinuses is not efficient to prevent sinus surgery or expensive biologic treatment in a lot of cases as the affected mucosa is not reached. More efficient approaches for topical drug delivery are, therefore, necessary.

Background: Earlier studies have shown that nasalization affects the radiated spectrum by modifying the vocal tract transfer function in a complex manner.

Methods: Here we study this phenomenon by measuring sine-sweep response of 3-D models of the vowels /u, a, ᴂ, i/, derived from volumetric MR imaging, coupled by means of tubes of different lengths and diameters to a 3-D model of a nasal tract.

Results: The coupling introduced a dip into the vocal tract transfer function.

Background: Angioedema induced by treatment with angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitors accounts for one third of angioedema cases in the emergency room; it is usually manifested in the upper airway and the head and neck region. There is no approved treatment for this potentially life-threatening condition.

Methods: In this multicenter, double-blind, double-dummy, randomized phase 2 study, we assigned patients who had ACE-inhibitor-induced angioedema of the upper aerodigestive tract to treatment with 30 mg of subcutaneous icatibant, a selective bradykinin B2 receptor antagonist, or to the current off-label standard therapy consisting of intravenous prednisolone (500 mg) plus clemastine (2 mg).

Introduction: The basic difference between the various common medical laser systems is the wavelength of the emitted light, leading to altered light-tissue interactions due to the optical parameters of the tissue. This study examines laser induced tissue effects in an in vitro tissue model using 1,470 nm diode laser compared to our standard practice for endonasal applications (940 nm diode laser) under standardised and reproducible conditions. Additionally, in vivo induced tissue effects following non-contact application with focus on mucosal healing were investigated in a controlled intra-individual design in patients treated for hypertrophy of nasal turbinate.

Recombinant allergen diagnostics have become increasingly important in daily allergological routine, made possible by inroads into the understanding of major and minor allergens accomplished within the last decade. Recombinant allergen diagnostics will, however, only provide correct diagnoses when sufficient knowledge of the regional IgE reactivity profile to a specific allergen source is available. A variety of studies in different European countries revealed reactivity profiles, where a sensitization to house dust mite could be recognized in more than 97 % of cases in which Der p1 and Der p2 were measured.

Background: Patients with nonallergic rhinitis with eosinophilia syndrome (NARES) show typical symptoms of persistent allergic rhinitis (PAR). The aim of the present study was to compare nasal cytokine patterns between NARES and PAR.

Methods: Nasal secretions of 31 patients suffering from NARES, 20 patients with PAR to house dust mite and 21 healthy controls were collected using the cotton wool method and analyzed for interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-7, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12, IL-13, IL-17, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), interferon-γ (IFN-γ), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and macrophage inflammatory protein-1β (MIP-1β) by Bio-Plex Cytokine Assay as well as eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) and tryptase by UniCAP-FEIA.

Recalcitrant forms of recurrent nasal polyposis are problematic for patients as for rhinosurgeons. In aspirin-sensitive patients, aspirin desensitization is supposed to prevent recurrence by targeting the metabolism of arachidonic acid.
