Various rounded turn designs in Structures for Lossless Ion Manipulation (SLIM) were explored via ion trajectory simulations. The optimized design was integrated into a SLIM ion mobility (IM) system coupled with a time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer (MS) for further experimental investigation. The SLIM-TOF IM-MS system was assessed for IM resolution and ion transmission efficiency across a wide / range using various RF frequencies and buffer gas combinations.

Stereolithography apparatus (SLA), a previously validated method for ion trap fabrication, was applied here to construct an array of mass analyzers and their mounting hardware. Two versions of the array were tested, using either six or twelve stretched RITs (x0 = 1.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA four-channel multiplexed mass spectrometer with rectilinear ion trap (RIT) mass analyzers was designed, constructed, and characterized. The system consists of four parallel atmospheric pressure ion (API) sources, four RIT mass analyzers, four sets of ion optical elements, and four conversion dynode detectors. The complete instrument is housed in a single vacuum manifold with a common vacuum system.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA miniature, handheld mass spectrometer, based on the rectilinear ion trap mass analyzer, has been applied to air monitoring for traces of toxic compounds. The instrument is battery-operated, hand-portable, and rugged. We anticipate its use in public safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental monitoring.

A novel, fast prototyping technique, stereolithography (SLA)-based fabrication, traditionally reserved for end use production parts and to fabricate master molds for rubber products, is applied here as a tool to create precise, arbitrary geometries. Taking full advantage of the SLA methodology, an open corner, polymer-based ion trap has been fabricated and tested.
