Article Synopsis
  • Researchers surveyed 55 clinicians across Europe to understand how they manage pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease (PH-ILD) and identify unmet needs since there are no approved therapies for this condition in Europe.
  • The study found that many clinicians rely on echocardiography and off-label treatments like PDE-5 inhibitors for PH-ILD patients, with 50% using off-label medications despite concerns about their efficacy.
  • The results indicate a significant gap in effective treatment options and emphasize the need for more clinical evidence to guide PH-ILD management.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) adds a substantial disease burden, including higher mortality, when associated with interstitial lung disease (ILD), a severe, chronic, progressive condition. Yet little is known of the lived experiences, perspectives, priorities, and viewpoints of patients and carers living with PH-ILD. The Voice of the Patient meeting at the center of this qualitative research study aims to provide these difficult-to-obtain insights from a European perspective for the first time.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between achieved low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels and healthcare costs in patients who underwent lipid-lowering therapy after a recent myocardial infarction (heart attack) in Spain.
  • Out of 6025 patients analyzed, only 11% met the LDL-C goals set by 2016 guidelines, and a mere 1% reached the more stringent goals of the 2019 guidelines.
  • Achieving lower LDL-C levels was linked to significantly reduced healthcare resource use and costs, suggesting that more intensive lipid-lowering treatments could be economically and clinically beneficial.
