Recruiting and retaining research participants is challenging because it often requires overcoming structural barriers and addressing how histories of mistrust and individuals' lived experiences affect their research engagement. We describe a pilot workshop designed to educate clinical research professionals on using empathy skills to recognize and mitigate bias to improve recruitment and retention. In a post-workshop survey (22/31 participants completed), 94% agreed the workshop helped them practice perspective-taking, recognize implicit bias, and identify opportunities for empathy.

Objective: Mechanisms underlying metabolic improvement following metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) may provide insight into novel therapies. Vasopressin improves body composition and protects against hypoglycemia. Associations of copeptin, a stable cleavage product of vasopressin, with BMI and insulin resistance suggest an adaptive increase in vasopressin to counteract metabolic disruption.

Rationale: The percentage of women in radiology has remained at 25 % for decades. Our institutions identified the need to recruit, support and retain women in our departments in order to change this status quo.

Methods: Our institutions created two different frameworks for Women in Radiology (WIR) programs in order to meet the needs of each distinct department.

Background: Pancreatic steatosis has been associated with obesity and the metabolic syndrome. Studies in adults have demonstrated improvement in pancreatic steatosis following sleeve gastrectomy (SG) with concomitant improvement in glucose homeostasis.

Objectives: To examine changes in pancreatic steatosis in youth with severe obesity 24 months following SG.

Objective: The objective of this study is to assess the status and perception of work from home (WFH) in three academic musculoskeletal radiology divisions.

Materials And Methods: A 17-item anonymous online survey related to WFH was administered to all musculoskeletal (MSK) faculty (n = 27) of three academic radiology divisions between April and July 2023. Survey items included demographics, clinical work environment, presence of a WFH policy, number of days WFH and desired WFH days, commute, perceived benefits and drawbacks of WFH, and symptoms of burnout.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers used advanced LC-MS/MS assays to test whether higher serum myostatin levels correlate with lower insulin sensitivity in 74 overweight/obese adults aged 20-65 without type 2 diabetes.
  • * The findings revealed that higher serum myostatin levels were linked to lower insulin sensitivity (Matsuda index) even after accounting for factors like BMI and sex, suggesting myostatin might play a role in the development of insulin resistance.

Glucocorticoid metabolites are associated with body composition measures and are altered with weight status. Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) results in significant changes in weight and body composition. However, MBS effects on glucocorticoid metabolites are unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • Osteoporosis is a bone disease that is often not diagnosed enough, especially in certain racial and ethnic groups who might have worse problems after bone fractures.
  • A study looked at 3,708 patients getting lung cancer screenings and found that many of them had osteoporosis, especially women and White people, but it was present in all races and income levels.
  • Factors like having a lot of fat, a lot of calcification in arteries, and liver issues were linked to lower bone health, while having more muscle was good for bone health.

Background: Accumulating preclinical and preliminary translational evidence shows that the hypothalamic peptide oxytocin reduces food intake, increases energy expenditure, and promotes weight loss. It is currently unknown whether oxytocin administration is effective in treating human obesity.

Methods: In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, we randomly assigned adults with obesity 1:1 (stratified by sex and obesity class) to receive intranasal oxytocin (24 IU) or placebo four times daily for 8 weeks.

The purpose of this study was to assess the value of body composition measures obtained from opportunistic abdominal computed tomography (CT) in order to predict hospital length of stay (LOS), 30-day postoperative complications, and reoperations in patients undergoing surgery for spinal metastases. 196 patients underwent CT of the abdomen within three months of surgery for spinal metastases. Automated body composition segmentation and quantifications of the cross-sectional areas (CSA) of abdominal visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue and abdominal skeletal muscle was performed.

After myocardial infarction (MI), emergency hematopoiesis produces inflammatory myeloid cells that accelerate atherosclerosis and promote heart failure. Since the balance between glycolysis and mitochondrial metabolism regulates hematopoietic stem cell homeostasis, metabolic cues may influence emergency myelopoiesis. Here, we show in humans and female mice that hematopoietic progenitor cells increase fatty acid metabolism after MI.

Purpose: Sleeve gastrectomy (SG), the most commonly performed weight loss surgery in adolescents and young adults with moderate to severe obesity, is highly effective for weight loss. Current literature regarding depressive and anxiety symptomatology following SG in youth is sparse and conflicting. We evaluated changes in depressive and anxiety symptoms in adolescents and young adults with moderate to severe obesity 2 years following SG compared with non-surgical controls (NS) followed for a similar duration.

Article Synopsis
  • Well-being is a complex concept related to health and happiness, but definitions vary widely in literature.
  • A scoping review aimed to clarify how well-being is defined and measured in occupational health, reviewing 4394 articles and narrowing it down to 388 that met specific criteria.
  • The findings reveal that many studies fail to define well-being clearly or connect definitions to the tools used for measurement, leading to inconsistencies in how well-being is assessed.

Despite the risk of complications, high dose radiation therapy is increasingly utilized in the management of selected bone malignancies. In this study, we investigate the impact of moderate to high dose radiation (over 50 Gy) on bone metabolism and structure. Between 2015 and 2018, patients with a primary malignant bone tumor of the sacrum that were either treated with high dose definitive radiation only or a combination of moderate to high dose radiation and surgery were prospectively enrolled at a single institution.

Purpose: To develop a deep learning algorithm capable of extracting pectoralis muscle and adipose measurements and to longitudinally investigate associations between these measurements and incident heart failure (HF) in participants from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA).

Materials And Methods: MESA is a prospective study of subclinical cardiovascular disease characteristics and risk factors for progression to clinically overt disease approved by institutional review boards of six participating centers (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT00005487).

Academic medical centers (AMCs) rely on engaged and motivated faculty for their success. Significant burnout among clinical and research faculty has resulted in career disengagement and turnover. As such, AMCs must be vested in cultivating faculty engagement and well-being through novel initiatives that support faculty.

Unlabelled: To understand whether the bone loss which occurs after vertical sleeve gastrectomy increases the risk of fracture, we used an engineering model to estimate risk in participants before and after surgery. We found that estimated risk decreased 1 year after surgery and remained lower, though had rebounded, at year 2.

Purpose: Vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) improves metabolic health in young people with obesity but is accompanied by substantial loss of bone mass and estimated bone strength.

Article Synopsis
  • Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a prevalent liver condition, and the study aimed to differentiate between simpler steatosis and the more severe nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) using CT texture analysis.
  • Sixteen NAFLD patients underwent liver biopsies and CT scans to analyze gray-level texture features, finding that those with NASH had distinct CT texture results compared to those with simple steatosis.
  • The results indicated that lower entropy and mean pixel values could reliably predict NASH, suggesting that CT texture analysis could be an innovative tool for assessing liver disease progression.
