Genome-wide gene expression profiling was carried out on rat hepatoma cells and compared to profiles of hepatoma "variant" cell lines derived via a stringent selection protocol that enriches for rare cells (<1 in 100,000 cells) that fail to drive liver function. Results show 132 genes that are strongly (>5-fold) repressed in each of the four variant cell lines tested. An additional 68 genes were repressed in 3 of 4 variant cell lines.

Background: It is well documented that renal transplant recipients are at increased risk of developing skin cancers, in particular squamous cell carcinomas. Less extensively reviewed in the literature is the increased incidence of malignant melanoma. We have reviewed 10 patients in the Oxford renal transplant population who developed 12 melanomas following transplantation.

The bonding preference of transition metal species of general formula [(PH3)2M]2(mu-C2X4), where M = Cu or Ag and X = O, S, Se, or Te, and (Cp2Ti)2(mu-C2X4), where X = S or Se, are explored using density functional theory. The relative energies of metal binding to the bridging ligand in a dithiolene-like vs dithiocarbamate-like manner are evaluated. In all cases, the most stable structure corresponds to dithiolene-like (or side-side) bonding, consistent with the vast majority of these compounds which have been experimentally characterized.
