Article Synopsis
  • Mutations in the gene responsible for branchio-oto-renal syndrome (BOR) cause multi-organ malformations in humans and similar effects in animal models.
  • Researchers studied the zebrafish posterior lateral-line primordium to investigate the role of the Eya1 gene in organ development.
  • Their findings revealed that the loss of Eya1 reduces specific chemokine receptor expression, disrupting cell movement and leading to abnormal formation of the lateral line, which suggests that issues with cell movement contribute to organ malformations in BOR.

In skeletal muscle (SM), inward Ca-currents have no apparent role in excitation-contraction coupling (e-c coupling), however the Ca-channel blocker can affect twitch and tetanic muscle in mammalian SM. Experiments were conducted to study how diltiazem (DLZ) facilitates e-c coupling and inhibits contraction. 1) In complete Extensor Digitorum Longus (EDL) muscle and single intact fibres, 0.

Collective cell rotations are widely used during animal organogenesis. Theoretical and in vitro studies have conceptualized rotating cells as identical rigid-point objects that stochastically break symmetry to move monotonously and perpetually within an inert environment. However, it is unclear whether this notion can be extrapolated to a natural context, where rotations are ephemeral and heterogeneous cellular cohorts interact with an active epithelium.

The level of moral development may be crucial to understand behavior when people have to choose between prioritizing individual gains or pursuing general social benefits. This study evaluated whether two different psychological constructs, moral reasoning and moral competence, are associated with cooperative behavior in the context of the prisoner's dilemma game, a two-person social dilemma where individuals choose between cooperation or defection. One hundred and eighty-nine Mexican university students completed the Defining Issues Test (DIT-2; measuring moral reasoning) and the Moral Competence Test (MCT) and played an online version of the prisoner's dilemma game, once against each participant in a group of 6-10 players.

Most plane-polarized tissues are formed by identically oriented cells [1, 2]. A notable exception occurs in the vertebrate vestibular system and lateral-line neuromasts, where mechanosensory hair cells orient along a single axis but in opposite directions to generate bipolar epithelia [3-5]. In zebrafish neuromasts, pairs of hair cells arise from the division of a non-sensory progenitor [6, 7] and acquire opposing planar polarity via the asymmetric expression of the polarity-determinant transcription factor Emx2 [8-11].

Papillary thyroid carcinoma frequently metastasizes to regional lymph nodes. However, cervical lymph node metastasis as a sole manifestation of occult papillary thyroid carcinoma is rarely observed. Ectopic thyroid is an uncommon condition defined as the presence of thyroid tissue at a site other than pretracheal area.

Zebrafish germ plasm is composed of mRNAs such as vasa and nanos and of proteins such as Bucky ball, all of which localize symmetrically in four aggregates at the distal region of the first two cleavage furrows. The coordination of actin microfilaments, microtubules and kinesin is essential for the correct localization of the germ plasm. Rho-GTPases, through their effectors, coordinate cytoskeletal dynamics.

Due to various biochemical fractionation processes during lipid synthesis, the lipid molecules in the body contain substantially lower concentrations of 13C than the nonlipid molecules. Because of the isotopic differences between these two endogenous nutrient pools, any shift toward nonlipid fuel oxidation would be expected to increase in the δ13C of the exhaled breath. Interestingly, the possibility of whether or not an exercise-induced change actually occurs has been debated in literature for over two decades and researchers have still not reached a consensus.

Objective: Endometriosis is linked to altered cell proliferation and stem cell markers c-kit/stem cell factor (SCF) in ectopic endometrium. Our aim was to investigate whether c-kit/SCF also plays a role in eutopic endometrium.

Design: Eutopic endometrium obtained from 35 women with endometriosis and 25 fertile eumenorrheic women was analyzed for in situ expression of SCF/c-kit, Ki67, RAC-alpha serine/threonine-protein kinase (Akt), phosphorylated RAC-alpha serine/threonin-protein kinase (pAkt), Glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK3β), and phosphorylated glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (pGSK3β), throughout the menstrual cycle.

Introduction: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a neurological emergency representing the main cause of flaccid paralysis around the world, affecting all age groups. Little is known about the essential epidemiology of GBS in most Latin American countries.

Aim: To determine the mortality associated with the diagnosis of GBS in hospital discharges during 2010 in hospitals of the Ministry of Health, Mexico.

Uterine leiomyomatosis shows a frequency from 25 to 30% in reproductive age women. Traditional treatment is hysterectomy or myomectomy independently from fertility wishes of the woman. Its growth has been associated to estrogenic activity.

Growth and morbidity were studied in a group of children at one and two years of age of which 10 were born with intrauterine malnutrition, 14 were prematures and nine had normal weight. All were evaluated , according to the Gesell test, at two years of age. Malnourished and premature children grew at greater rate than normals, reaching their size at one year of age.
