Accurate short- and mid-term blood glucose predictions are crucial for patients with diabetes struggling to maintain healthy glucose levels, as well as for individuals at risk of developing the disease. Consequently, numerous efforts from the scientific community have focused on developing predictive models for glucose levels. This study harnesses physiological data collected from wearable sensors to construct a series of data-driven models based on deep learning approaches.

Flagella-like beating of actin bundles driven by self-organized myosin waves.

Wave-like beating of eukaryotic cilia and flagella-threadlike protrusions found in many cells and microorganisms-is a classic example of spontaneous mechanical oscillations in biology. This type of self-organized active matter raises the question of the coordination mechanism between molecular motor activity and cytoskeletal filament bending. Here we show that in the presence of myosin motors, polymerizing actin filaments self-assemble into polar bundles that exhibit wave-like beating.

Multi-Harmonic Modulation in a Fiber-Optic Gyroscope.

Optimizing the bias modulation of a fiber-optic gyroscope is crucial to improving its precision. In this study, we propose and demonstrate the use of multiple harmonics of sinusoidal modulation as an intermediate alternative to the widely used modulation methods: sinusoidal and square-wave modulation. We show that this alternative integrates the advantages of each modulation method by providing a smooth modulation that produces a clean, spike-free output and a satisfactory signal-to-noise ratio.

Psychometric Testing of the CEECCA Questionnaire to Assess Ability to Communicate among Individuals with Aphasia.

(1) Background: The CEECCA questionnaire assesses the ability to communicate among individuals with aphasia. It was designed using the NANDA-I and NOC standardised nursing languages (SNLs), reaching high content validity index and representativeness index values. The questionnaire was pilot-tested, demonstrating its feasibility for use by nurses in any healthcare setting.

An Automated Immunoblot Method for Detection of IgG Antibodies to Hepatitis C Virus: a Potential Supplemental Antibody Confirmatory Assay.

An estimated 41,200 people were newly infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) in 2016 in the United States. Screening tests for antibodies to HCV may generate up to 32% false positivity in low-risk populations. Current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) screening recommendations do not require confirmatory testing of a screening anti-HCV-positive test; however, confirmation is valuable for surveillance in the absence of HCV RNA testing.

Injection locking of a high power ultraviolet laser diode for laser cooling of ytterbium atoms.

We developed a high-power laser system at a wavelength of 399 nm for laser cooling of ytterbium atoms with ultraviolet laser diodes. The system is composed of an external cavity laser diode providing frequency stabilized output at a power of 40 mW and another laser diode for amplifying the laser power up to 220 mW by injection locking. The systematic method for optimization of our injection locking can also be applied to high power light sources at any other wavelengths.

Rickettsia felis infection rates in an east Texas population.

Murine typhus (Rickettsia typhi), endemic in southern California and South Texas, is maintained within a host-vector system consisting of the opossum and cat flea. In the early 1990s, a second rickettsial species, Rickettsia felis, was also found to be maintained within the opossum-cat flea system and is, in fact, found more commonly than R. typhi in the opossum and cat flea.

An evaluation of cytotoxicity of the taxane and platinum agents combination treatment in a panel of human ovarian carcinoma cell lines.

Objectives: The objectives of this study were to determine the optimum schedule for combination of taxane and platinum agents in human ovarian carcinoma cell lines.

Methods: Cell growth inhibition was determined by the standard MTT assay and an IC(50) was calculated for docetaxel, paclitaxel, cisplatin, and carboplatin in seven human ovarian cancer cell lines (CAOV-3, OVCAR-3, SKOV-3, ES-2, OV-90, TOV-112D, and TOV-21G). The IC(50) was defined as the drug concentration required for a 50% reduction in optical density.

An in vitro study of the inhibitory activity of gemcitabine and platinum agents in human endometrial carcinoma cell lines.

Objective: To determine the cytotoxic activity of gemcitabine on a panel of endometrial cancer cell lines and to determine if the addition of platinum agents enhanced this activity.

Methods: A panel of four endometrial carcinoma cell lines was treated with variable concentrations of gemcitabine, gemcitabine and cisplatin, or gemcitabine and carboplatin. 3-(4,5-Cimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assays were performed to determine the IC(50).
