Background: Pulmonary hypertension caused by extrinsic pulmonary vascular compression secondary to mediastinal neuroendocrine tumours is a very rare condition, posing a diagnostic challenge. There is no clear consensus regarding the best treatment strategy due to the lack of clinical data, leading to poor prognoses for these patients.

Case Summary: We present the case of a 38-year-old man hospitalized with signs of pulmonary hypertension and acute heart failure.

Pharmacological management of HDP includes agents supported by extensive evidence ensuring their safety for use. Among those traditionally described in the literature are: alpha-methyldopa, labetalol, and sustained-release nifedipine (NIF-RETARD). These drugs, in addition to being compatible with pregnancy, present additional eligibility criteria.

Thiadiazines are heterocyclic compounds known for some pharmacological activities. However, the ability of these compounds and their derivatives to act as antibacterial agents and inhibitors of the efflux system in resistant bacteria remains unknown. This study aims to evaluate the antibacterial and NorA efflux pump inhibitory activities of thiadiazine-derived compounds (IJ14, IJ15, IJ16, IJ17, IJ18, IJ19, and IJ20) against the Staphylococcus aureus 1199B strain.

This study developed a biodegrading additive based on nanosilica and modified by cellulase enzyme in the presence of citric acid and sodium citrate. The additive was tested as a facilitator for biodegradation of the commercial low-density polyethylene (LDPE) in soil. Enzyme immobilization was confirmed by enzymatic assays.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study revises the Neotropical flower fly genus Orthonevra, describing 12 new species, each with illustrations, including names like Orthonevra batman and O. cthulhu.
  • - Seven existing species were redescribed and illustrated, while three Nearctic species were identified, bringing the total number of Neotropical species to 20.
  • - The research also designates lectotypes for two species, removes one from the genus, and provides a dichotomous and interactive pictorial key for identifying these species.

Dopamine (DA) signaling is critical for optimal cognitive aging, especially in prefrontal-parietal and fronto-striatal networks. Single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with dopamine regulation, COMTVal158Met and DRD2C957T, stand to exert influence on executive function performance via neural properties. The current study investigated whether longitudinal thinning of mesocortical regions is related to COMT and DRD2 genetic predisposition and associated with decline in executive function over four-years.

Radical treatment for prostate cancer is associated with significant morbidity. Percutaneous image-guided irreversible electroporation is a non-thermal ablative technique that has emerged as a valuable option. This study describes the case of a patient with prostate cancer who was successfully treated using irreversible electroporation.

Chronic systemic immune activation significantly influences human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease progression. Despite evidence of a pro-inflammatory environment in the genital tract of HIV-infected women, comprehensive investigations into cervical tissue from this region remain limited. Similarly, the consequences of chronic HIV infection on the integrity of the female genital epithelium are poorly understood, despite its importance in HIV transmission and replication.

Background And Objective: The University of the Philippines Manila (UPM) subcommittee on students in distress was convened during the COVID-19 pandemic to develop "plans, programs and mechanisms" to deal with students experiencing distress and mental health concerns. This study was conducted as one of the activities of the Subcommittee to inform policy to address the following research objective: to describe the experiences, perceptions, and knowledge of both students and faculty members of UP Manila regarding distress.

Methods: An online survey tool was created using the results from seven online focus group discussions among 20 faculty of UP Manila.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of liposome-encapsulated eugenol-based thiazolic derivatives against efflux pump-carrying bacteria. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was determined to evaluate the antibacterial activity and antibiotic potentiation against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, as well as to analyze the inhibition of efflux pumps in S. aureus strains 1199B and K2068 in the ethidium bromide assay.

  • Lentigo maligna (LM) and lentigo maligna melanoma (LMM) are key melanoma subtypes with an incidence of 1.37 per 100,000 in the U.S., often misdiagnosed, especially among the elderly, leading to treatment delays.
  • A study evaluated the diagnostic abilities of ophthalmologists in identifying pigmented skin lesions in the periorbital region by reviewing 79 cases, comparing their results with dermatologists.
  • Results showed that ophthalmologists had a diagnostic accuracy of 63.5% and lower sensitivity compared to dermatologists (33.3% vs. 46.9%), with a significantly higher percentage of ophthalmologists rating cases as "difficult" and suggesting fewer biopsies

Article Synopsis
  • PAHs are air pollutants largely produced by combustion and industrial activities, with spiders potentially serving as effective biomonitors for assessing their levels.
  • The study focused on two spider species, Aglaoctenus lagotis and Metepeira spp., collected from various roadside locations to analyze their capacity to absorb PAHs and the influence of road traffic on this accumulation.
  • Results showed significant differences in PAH levels between the two species, with Metepeira spp. accumulating much higher concentrations, particularly near highways, highlighting the impact of urban pollution and the importance of spiders in monitoring air quality.

Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterium responsible for resistance to multiple drugs and the efflux system is widely studied among the resistance mechanisms developed by this species. The present study evaluates the inhibition of the MepA efflux pump by thiadiazine-derived compounds. For this purpose, thiadiazine-derived compounds (IJ-14 to IJ-20) were tested against S.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) comprise >4000 synthetic substances used in industrial applications and consumer products. PFAS used daily in households and manufacturing plants end up in domestic sewage, and industrial effluents can be discharged to surface water. Urban watersheds located in low and middle-income countries (LMIC), which lack sanitation infrastructure, are potential recipients of waste containing PFAS.

Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, especially antisynthetase syndrome, often appear outside of the muscles as interstitial lung disease (ILD). Another typical finding is the presence of mechanic's hands. The aim of the present study was to describe the clinical, functional, tomographic, and serological data of patients with ILD and mechanic's hands and their response to treatment and survival rates.

Mechanosensitive Piezo channels regulate cell division, cell extrusion, and cell death. However, systems-level functions of Piezo in regulating organogenesis remain poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that Piezo controls epithelial cell topology to ensure precise organ growth by integrating live-imaging experiments with pharmacological and genetic perturbations and computational modeling.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists study the tree of life, where some smaller groups of creatures, called clades, don't have many relatives left and look very old, like living fossils.
  • A special group called Amblypygi, or whip spiders, has been around for a long time, but only one of its relatives is still alive today, and it hasn't been seen since 1899.
  • A recent discovery of a new whip spider species in Colombia helped scientists create a family tree for these spiders and showed that finding more ancient species is important for understanding how living things are related.

Background: The presence of veterinary drug residues in food-producing animals and animal products is regulated through the enforcement of maximum residue limits (MRLs). To answer the need of the food sector to monitor these substances in a wide range of food commodities, stakeholders at AOAC INTERNATIONAL identified the need for a reliable confirmatory screening method. Such a qualitative approach is required for compliance checking and to support product release in manufacturing.
