Diabetes potentiates acetylcholine-induced relaxation in rabbit renal arteries.

The response of rabbit renal arteries to acetylcholine and its endothelial modulation in diabetes were investigated. Acetylcholine induced concentration-related endothelium-dependent relaxation of renal arteries that was significantly more potent in diabetic rabbits than in control rabbits. Pretreatment with N(G)-nitro-L-arginine (L-NOArg), indomethacin, or L-NOArg plus indomethacin induced partial inhibition of acetylcholine-induced relaxation.

Assessment of insecticide resistance in five insect pests attacking field and vegetable crops in Nicaragua.

Field populations of Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari), Plutella xylostella (L.), Spodoptera exigua (Hübner), Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) and Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) were tested for resistance to several insecticides commonly used in Nicariagua. Assays were conducted to estimate the LD50s or LC50s and the corresponding resistance ratios.

Continued experience with physical examination alone for evaluation and management of penetrating zone 2 neck injuries: results of 145 cases.

Purpose: Our preliminary experience with physical examination alone in the evaluation of penetrating zone 2 neck injuries for vascular trauma was previously reported in 28 patients over a 2-year period (1991-1993). The purpose of the current study was to examine the results of this approach in a much larger group of patients over an 8-year period.

Methods: The medical records for all patients admitted to our level I trauma center (all of them entered into our prospective protocol) between December 1991 and April 1999 with penetrating zone 2 neck trauma were reviewed for their initial presentation and any documented vascular injury.

Diabetes-induced changes in endothelial mechanisms implicated in rabbit carotid arterial response to 5-hydroxytryptamine.

The influence of diabetes on endothelial mechanisms implicated in the response of isolated rabbit carotid arteries to 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) was studied. 5-HT induced a concentration-dependent contraction that was potentiated in arteries from diabetic rabbits with respect to that in arteries from control rabbits. Endothelium removal potentiated 5-HT contractions in arteries from both control and diabetic rabbits but increased the maximum effect only in arteries from diabetic rabbits.

Influence of experimental diabetes on regulatory mechanisms of vascular response of rabbit carotid artery to acetylcholine.

The purpose of this study was to analyse the influence of experimental diabetes on vascular response of rabbit carotid artery to acetylcholine (Ach). We compared the Ach-induced relaxant response of isolated arterial segments obtained from both control and diabetic animals. To assess the influence of the endothelium, this cell layer was mechanically removed in some of the arterial segments ("rubbed arteries") from each experimental group.

Introduction And Objectives: Lack of available beds in the coronary care unit, makes time to thrombolysis still too long. Although fibrinolytic therapy is administered in the emergency department in most hospitals, mean in-hospital delay continues to be long. Our purpose was to improve the treatment of these patients and to evaluate if this delay could be shortened by creating a thrombolysis unit for the treatment of patients with acute myocardial infarction.

We have analysed the effects of 2,3-diepiingol 7,12-diacetate-8-isobutyrate (compound 1), ingenol-3-angelate-17-benzoate (compound 2), ingenol-3-angelate-17-benzoate-20-acetate (compound 3) and 3,5,7,8,9,15-hexahydroxyjatropha-6(17),11-dien-14-one-5,8-bi s(2-methylbutyrate)-7-(2-methylpropionate) (compound 4), four diterpenes isolated from E. canariensis, on the isometric tension developed by isolated rabbit basilar and carotid arteries. Concentration-response curves to these compounds were obtained cumulatively in both arteries at resting tension and active tone (KCl, 50 mM).

Methods: We compared the 5-HT-induced contractile responses of cerebral arteries from control goats and from goats with SAH that had been experimentally induced 3 days earlier by delivery of autologous arterial blood into the subarachnoid space.

Uses and properties of current glass ionomer cements: a review.

Effects of equivalent abrasive grit sizes utilizing differing polishing motions on selected restorative materials.

The effects on surface roughness of three specific classifications of abrasive motion during the polishing of selected amalgam and resin composite materials were evaluated with a profilometer. Equivalent grit sizes were used to evaluate the character of the surface created by each class of abrasive motion. The motions investigated were rotary (diamond), planar (sandpaper disk), and reciprocal (reciprocating handpiece).

Resin-modified glass ionomers: a new option in restorative dentistry.

New dental materials and products are constantly being introduced in hopes of replacing or improving established materials. Although this onslaught of dental innovation can eventually lead to major improvements in the ease and success of clinical dentistry, it also presents a nightmare for the practitioner wishing to keep pace with these products. Correspondence between radioactive and functional methods in the quality control of DNA restriction and modifying enzymes.

We evaluated the use of two radiolabeled lambda DNA/Hpa II substrates to detect 5'-->3', 3'-->5' single and double stranded DNA dependent exonuclease and phosphatase activities found as contaminants in restriction and modifying enzyme preparations. Looking for the meaning of the radioactive assays results in a real cloning experience, we performed a cloning simulation assay using the same conditions established for the radioactive assay (enzyme units and pmols of DNA ends). As a result, we found that for degradation percentages of the radioactive DNA substrate per enzyme unit below 0.

Hemodynamic improvement in hemorrhagic shock by aortic balloon occlusion and hypertonic saline solutions.

The initial treatment of uncontrolled hemorrhage shock from an abdominal source is controversial. The hemodynamic effects of transfemoral diaphragmatic aortic occlusion with a balloon followed by a single bolus of hypertonic saline solutions have been evaluated in 28 dogs. The animals were submitted to pressure-driven hemorrhage for 90 min, according to mean arterial pressure in the abdominal aorta and randomized into four groups, according to the treatment employed at 34 min after hemorrhage.
