Given the increasing incidence and prevalence of skin cancer, dermatologists are more frequently recommending sunscreens to their patients. However, the safety of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide nanosized particles in the majority of sunscreens has come under scrutiny from governments and the general public. We sought to characterize the use, safety, and regulatory state of nanosized particles in titanium dioxide and zinc oxide in sunscreens based on studies and position statements from 1980 to 2008.

Dapsone, a synthetic sulfone that has been available for over 60 years, has been used to treat a myriad of cutaneous disorders. Prior to the general acceptance of isotretinoin, oral dapsone had been reported to be effective in the treatment of nodulocystic acne. However, the potential for systemic toxicity prevented its widespread adoption in the treatment of acne.

Background: Improving the appearance of striae distensae, particularly striae alba, has remained a challenge due to the limited availability of effective and low-risk treatment options. Fractional photothermolysis, a novel concept in skin rejuvenation, has been reported to be effective in the treatment of facial rhytides, acne scars, and surgical scars, but its use in the treatment of striae has not been well studied.
