Relationship between Diet Quality and Periodontal Disease in South Korean Adults Aged ≥40 Years.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between diet quality and periodontal disease, in adults aged ≥40 years, using data from the 7th (2016-2018) Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey (KNHANES), representing South Koreans. The subjects of this study were 7935 people aged ≥40 years, who responded to the items in the Korea Healthy Eating Index (KHEI) and underwent periodontal examination. Complex sample univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted, to analyze the relationship between the diet quality and periodontal disease.

In vivo functional effects of VP30 exopolysaccharides on loperamide-induced constipation in rats.

In this work, the in vivo functionalities of milk fermented with VP30 (VP30-EPS) and purified exopolysaccharide (pEPS) from the milk fermented with VP30 were evaluated for their effect on constipation using an experimental constipated rat model. Rats were randomly divided into four groups: (i) control group (PBS administered normal group), (ii) loperamide treated group (constipation group), (iii) constipation with loperamide plus VP30-EPS (1 g/kg), and (iv) constipation with loperamide plus pEPS (0.6 g/kg) groups.

There have been contradictory reports on the effects of vitamin D in the prevention of periodontitis. We analyzed the association between vitamin D status (levels of plasma 25(OH)D) and periodontitis using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2013-2014 database. Among the participants in the KNHANES (2013-2014), only those aged ≥60 years who completed a health interview survey, periodontal examination, and blood test were included in the study.

The Intertester Reliability of a Modified Movement System Impairment Classification System Used to Evaluate Individuals With Prolonged Sitting: A Preliminary Study.

Background And Objective: Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is a common spinal disorder that causes patients to assume a forward-trunk posture. Spinal alignment affects gait, muscle activity, and trunk-pelvis-limb coordination because the lumbar spine and muscles interact to allow load transfer between the lower back and pelvis during sagittal trunk movement. Therefore, we investigated the relationships among trunk and pelvic movement, swing toe clearance, and muscle coordination (isolated contraction ratios) of the stance limb during obstacle-crossing by patients with LSS.

Leonurus japonicus Houtt Attenuates Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Free Fatty Acid-Induced HepG2 Cells and Mice Fed a High-Fat Diet.

We investigated the effects of a ethanol extract (LJE) on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). An in vitro model of hepatic steatosis was treated with 1 mM free fatty acid (FFA) in HepG2 cells. An in vivo NAFLD model was established using C57BL/6 mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD) and administered LJE (100 or 200 mg/kg) orally for 14 weeks.

Antibacterial activity and effects of Colla corii asini on Salmonella typhimurium invasion in vitro and in vivo.

Background: Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium is a foodborne pathogen that triggers inflammatory responses in the intestines of humans and livestock. Colla corii asini is a traditional medicine used to treat gynecologic and chronic diseases in Korea and China. However, the antibacterial activity of Colla corii asini has been unknown.

Occult residual disease in remnant tissues could be the cause of tumor relapse. To identify signal molecules and target cells that may be indicative of occult residual disease within a remnant microenvironment, proximal resection margin tissues of gastric cancers were used, as these correspond to the nearest remnant tissues after gastrectomy. Increased miR-146b-5p in the remnant microenvironment was determined to be a strong risk factor for tumor relapse and poor survival rate.

Chemoresistance of CD133(+) colon cancer may be related with increased survivin expression.

However, this claim has been challenged recently and we previously reported that patients with CD133(+) colon cancer have benefit from 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) chemotherapy incontrast to no benefit in patients with CD133(-) cancer. To elucidate the role of CD133 expression in chemoresistance, we silenced the CD133 expression in a colon cancer cell line and determined its effect on the biological characteristics downstream.

Association of urinary 3-phenoxybenzoic acid levels with self-reported depression symptoms in a rural elderly population in Asan, South Korea.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the association between presence of depression symptoms and the exposure level to insecticides among aged population in rural area, determined via measured levels of urinary 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA), after controlling for socioeconomic confounding factors.

Methods: Using a cross-sectional study design, we randomly recruited participants for our study (161 male and 239 female) from rural areas of Asan, Chungnam, Korea. Environmental risk factor exposure was assessed using a questionnaire, and gas chromatography- mass spectrometry was used to analyze urinary 3-PBA levels.

Effect of initial position on the muscle activity of the hip extensors and amount of pelvic tilt during prone hip extension.

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to identify the effects of initial position of the hip joint with changes in the hip joint angle on the respective muscle activities of the bilateral erector spinae (ES), unilateral gluteus maximus (GM), and biceps femoris (BF) and the amount of pelvic anterior tilt during prone hip extension (PHE). [Subjects] Fifteen healthy volunteers were enrolled in this study. [Methods] The subjects performed PHE in three positions: neutral, 20°, and 45° flexed hip joint.

Chong-Myung-Tang (CMT) is a multi-herbal formula that has been used to improve memory. However, the potential mechanism remains unknown. The present study investigated the effects of CMT (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg) on spatial memory of aged mice.

Optimization of promoting conidial production of a pinewood nematode biocontrol fungus, Esteya vermicola using response surface methodology.

Hydrogen peroxide was applied for promoting sporulation of Esteya vermicola and response surface methodology was used to optimize the effect of processing parameters on sporulation. Three variables were concentration (X 1), treatment time (X 2), and carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (X 3). The results indicated that X 1 and X 2 and the quadratic term of X 1 had significant effect on the sporulation, followed by the significant interaction effects between X 1 and X 2.
