The national-level land cover database is essential to sustainable landscape management, environmental protection, and food security. In Afghanistan, the existing national-level land cover data from 1972, 1993, and 2010 relied on satellite data from diverse sensors adopted three different land cover classification systems. This inconsistent land cover map across the various years leads to the challenge of assessing landscape changes that are crucial for management efforts.

In the present study, Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture RADAR (SAR) data and Otsu method were utilized to map flood inundation areas. Google Earth Engine (GEE) was used for implementing Otsu algorithm and processing Sentinel-1 SAR data.

Several cash crops, including coffee and bananas, have been identified in the recently approved Agriculture Development Strategy. Both of these crops have encouraged smallholder farmers to convert their subsistence farming practices to more commercial cultivation.

Basin-wide information on erosion dynamics is needed for conservation planning, but field-based studies are limited. This study used remote sensing (RS) data and a geographic information system (GIS) to estimate the spatial distribution of soil erosion across the entire Koshi basin, to identify changes between 1990 and 2010, and to develop a conservation priority map.
